Why doesn't my DVD player play 856x480 .avi files?

Neither my DVD player nor my TV with an inbuilt player can play them.
I have two files burnt onto a disc. They are both .avi with mp3 audio.
However, one is 856x480 and one is 640x480, that's the only difference. They're both the same size and length.
Why is one recognized and not the other?

Home DVD players usually only support DivX avi files. Maybe the one avi file is not DivX. It may be Xvid or H.264 or something. AVI is not a format, it is a container. The actual codec could be just about anything, packaged in an AVI container. Try re-encoding it to DivX and see if it works. Or better yet, use something like DVD Flick to actually create a standalone DVD out of it so that it will play on any player.

Standard DVD players read the .Vob format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

You should not need any special type of blank CD.

Do be aware that not all DVD players can play AVI files. And for the ones that can, there are some codec requirements. You can't use just any codec and for the codecs that are supported there are some limitations on what they can handle.

I am trying to play an avi file on my DVD player but unfortunately it doesnt work. A friend of mine made a DVD disk which had 4 avi movies and they all worked perfectly on my DVD player. Can anyone tell me which software should I use to make my avi movies work on my DVD player perfectly? And from where can I download that software which will make the movie play without conversion? You need a Divx/AVI/Xvid Compatible DVD Player.

You Probably have a Standard DVD Player which CANT Read AVI.
