Question about multi-region DVD players?

I want to buy one because I live in Australia so my region code is 4 but I want to buy DVDs from US because they're much cheaper but their region code is 1 so they wont work on my regular DVD player. I wanted to ask if multi-region DVD players are simple to use? Is it just a case of plugging them in and there you go you can watch R1 and R4 DVDs? Or is there more to it than that?

They're as easy to use as any other DVD player. But remember that DVDs from the USA are also NTSC format, not PAL format, so you *might* need a player that also can convert from NTSC to PAL (or a TV that can display NTSC input in addition to PAL input).

(NTSC and PAL were the two main video formats used for analog video transmission. NTSC mostly was used in the USA, PAL mostly in Europe. Even though DVDs are digital, they still had to play on analog TVs so NTSC and PAL DVDs are slightly different).

I don't know where to buy a multi-regional dvd player, maybe you can try to make region free DVD from your region limit DVDs, then play the region free DVD on any region limit DVD player, you can try RZ DVD COPY, it can make region free DVD from region limit DVD, it can directly copy video DVD to new DVD writeable disc, to hard disk DVD folder, or to hard disk ISO file.

NTSC DVDs - can these play on a multi region PAL DVD player?

I am visting the USA and want to stock up on some much needed DVDs before I head home. I live in Australia (region 4/PAL) and have a multi-region DVD player. The DVDs I want to buy are NTSC, can my PAL multi-region still play these DVDs?

If you have a multi region player that supports NTSC play back, then yes it will play the region 1 DVD discs.

In Australia, some really cheap no name brand Players are all areas/region, I got one for like $30 9 years ago still works too.

Plays burnt dvds aswell.

If I buy a multi-region DVD player in Australia can I watch region 1 DVDs on it?

Australia is region 4, USA and Canada are region 1, I want to buy some TV series on DVD which are 10x cheaper in region 1 format, if I spend $30 on a multi-region DVD player will I be able to watch region 1 DVDs on it? I assume it should work since it's called a multi-region DVD player but I can totally imagine that after I buy one I'll find out it doesn't bloody work or something.

More than likely such a player will ignore region altogether, and convert the video format on the disc to your TV format.

The only real issue is getting US based DVD vendors to ship to Australia at all.

Multi Region Philips DVD Player? Help?

I have a Philips DVD Video player and I'm from Australia and I just bought a region 2 DVD (I know my laptop can play it) and I was wondering is this DVD player a multi region, (meaning it can play all regions) and if so can you just put the DVD in and press play and it will work or do I have to get a code somewhere to make it work? Can anyone tell me, or help me? That would be great if someone can help me, thanks!

As a rule that I have found, most big name players are not multi region, you are better off buying a "throw away" player. This seems to be one of the rare times when cheaper is better.

An American TV is not PAL compatible. There is nothing you can do. Region codes can be overridden but not the TV hardware.

I want to buy the season DVD of "We Can Be Heroes" which is a sitcom in Australia (it is only available in Australia), but i do not know if the DVD will work in an American DVD player. My friend says it should work on any computer...? Ideas/suggsestions.

Every commercial DVD and DVD player are coded with one or more 'regions'.

Australian DVDs are typically coded with region 4 (same as Mexico).
North American DVD players are coded with region 1.

In general, if the region code on the disc does not match the region code on the player, it will not allow you to play the disc. However, some DVD players have a special code that allows you to change the built-in region code, and if you're lucky there may also be an 'unlock' code that makes your player region-free (i.e. plays discs from any region). Some DVD players come region-free out of the box, but this is rare.

Some players (especially computer DVD drives) will restrict the number of times you can switch the region code (e.g. 4 or 5 times), after that, the drive will be permanently locked to the last setting.

Note that some DVDs may be multi-region encoded. For example, many DVDs in Mexico are encoded with both region 1 and region 4 because many people import DVD players from the United States that are region 1. If for example you go to a Mexican Blockbuster Video, every DVD will have a sticker in the corner saying whether it is region 4 or dual region 1/4. Likewise, some Australian discs may be encoded with both region 1 and 4, but this is not as likely.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Australian DVDs are formatted with PAL video whereas North American DVDs are formatted with NTSC video. Many North American players can play PAL discs, but not all can, so this is also something to think about.
