sally joe: I do that, my pedetrician even recommened it but bendryl only last for 1 1/2-2 hours with my son

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly with my three kids on transatlantics about twice a year.

For such a short flight, you probably don't need to use any drugs. Usually, by the time you get to the airport, check-in, get through security, board your flight (pant! pant!) the kids are so tired they nod off on their own.

I saw it done on my flights. I can't take antihistamines so I can't risk giving it to my kids (family trait so it's genetic, I ended up unconscious in the ER at age 7). Make sure you try it out at home because twice as a Flight Attendant, they made the child wired. These drugs also can make the kid dehydrated. You wont need a full dose and sometimes the drugs make children disoriented and cranky. You don't want that on arrival! If you do the drugs, do them after take-off or immediately after the meal service so that it's well worn off by the time you land.

I was also warned that they can make the child have accidents (since they relax *everything*).

Some parents feel the need to do this because their children are hyperactive or just get overstimulated. Another consideration is naps. Mine, at age 4, had long given those up. I only saw it on really long flights, trans Atlantic or Pacific's.

Please note that it's not necessary to make them drink or suck on anything for take-off and landing. The AAP simply recommends that they be awake not on landing (which is too late) but at the TOP of descent. You'll feel your ears reverse pressurization too and the cabin will be busy with everyone getting ready for landing. Good time to be up, using the restroom for the last time, etc. If either/both fall asleep on the tarmac, as so many children do, please don't unnecessarily wake them up for take-off.

I just found that simple toys worked best. Coloring things, stickers, play dough, pipe cleaners, etc. Make sure to have at least one new toy or book for each. Give them just as you're getting seated and hopefully, these will keep them calm and occupied until you're in the air. You can read to them and mine liked the books with flaps that open.

If you opt for any electronical products, don't give them over until you're in the air, unless you're sure they'll understand that they can't play with them on take-off (tricky one!) Also, make sure they're fully charged and bring the recharger. Be careful with any game chips or cards. They get lost easily. I have a portable DVD player but there are other gizmos that play movies.

Bring snacks and empty sippy cup to fill instead of having them use open glasses. I bring a change of clothes for mine (just a T and shorts) because they still spill.

Please don't stress the sleep issue. No one will complain about a quiet, occupied child. Some parents focus so intently on getting their kids to sleep that when they don't, everyone ends up cranky and frustrated.

On the same vein, please don't mess with their sleep schedules, thinking that getting them overly tired will make them sleep better. It's actually the opposite. Make sure they're well rested to avoid any meltdowns in the airport or at the start of your flight. They need their energy! (and so do you mom so be organized with the packing and don't be up to midnight doing it). You don't need to make my mistake!

For more information, ten years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

Flying alone with kids is not my favorite thing to do but if I'm organized and rested, I can handle it. It still beats not going!

How do get sound for my car DVD player?

Q. We recently bought a 2005 Chevy Tahoe with a dvd player and it only came with one set of wireless head phones but I have four kids. We are going to take an 8 hour road trip and I'd really like them to all be able to hear the movie. I've tried every radio station a couple times with a movie playing but I couldn't find sound. I'm not sure if I need to do something to the dvd player to get it to work or what. I've checked the owners manual and all literature that came with the car but there is nothing about it. My in-laws even own a Tahoe that's almost the same year, with the same player bur whenever I ask them for help they can't seem to give me an answer.
Can anyone help?

Answer
your car dvd is single din or double din?
Now double din car dvd installed Built-in amplifier on the market
so if your car dvd player not installed a Built-in one, you should hook up a loudspeaker and a subwoofer to the car dvd.
just personal tips. enjoy your life with your families!

Kids on Airplane..what can I take on the plane to keep them occupied?

natbyrd92

It is our family's first flight. We are going on a 2 hour flight. The ages are 9, 5, and a 2 1/2 year old. My 9 year old has a nintendo ds, can she take that on the flight? I just need some ideas, please help.

Answer
You should definitely bring some electronic devices to keep them occupied.
Things like portable dvd players, etc.
Make sure to bring them snacks that they enjoy, cause the plane may not have the right food.

*One thing that should absolutely make sure you bring is gum. Childrens ears are very sensative to the high altitudes and the plane ride can be very painful for them (I know thid for personal past expereinces). When you first get on the lpane, give each of them a piece of gum, and then another after they eat. This is relieve a lot of tears*

kids and T.V. ? how much is too much?

This mommy

ok i'll be the first to admit that our 2 year old loves t.v. and watches barney, spongebob and the teletubblies(which i hate but he just laughs and laughs. He mostly watches it when i am trying to cook and clean. I also have a 3 month old so i have my hands full during the day. My friend has a 3 year old. she is a tv addict watching more then my son by hours. she even has a tv and dvd player in her room. Her mom even lets her fall asleep watching tv. IDK i just think thats too much tv. we dont allow our son to watch more then an hour or so daily. And he will never have a tv in is room. I just think thats going to far. But thats just my husband an dmyselves personal opionion. I would never say any thing to my friend unless she asked for my opnion. but her daughter screams and cries for tv and they give up their tv time for her. That would never happen in my house. also my sister does this with her small kids. How much do you think is too much tv and do your kids have one in theri rooms?
i would never say anything to my freind or sister because its not my bussiness. i was just courious to see what everyone thinks?

Answer
like alexa said, there are differences in what is too much depending on how tv is used/watched. some days we watch a couple baby einsteins, i will admit -- on rainy days, on days when her teeth hurt and she needs the distraction -- but on those days i watch with her and we talk through it, identifying things. tv in the toddler bedroom: bad, bad, bad, i say. the way your kids are watching sounds totally moderate and reasonable. i agree that it would be ideal if they saw none, but it is all about what is normal for your family. if you are a family that watches tv, well, it is unreasonable to say "my kids won't ever watch" unless you are prepared to give it up yourself. it also depends on the individual child and how s/he reacts to it. ruby has never once sat mesmerized in front of tv or a video. but she usually watches intently the first 5 minutes and then goes off to play. as a result, i don't stress out about it. if she sat and stared, i would strictly limit her time to 30 minutes.

What food should I bring on an airplane?

soso (:

So, my parents and I are going on vacation. We leave in 2 weeks, but the thing is the flight is about 14 hrs.
Also, what things should I bring on the plane with me to keep me occupied during the flight; like any books, magazines, etc?

Answer
Foods:
-candy, sour patch kids, sour punch straws, chocolate bars, anything like that you enjoy.
-don't forget your gum! it will help you out with your ears popping and stuff.
-some chips, hot cheetos, pretzels maybe from schnider of hanover.
-cookies, brownies, danishes.
-fruit!apples, oranges, grapefruit.
-small packaged snacks crackers, like peanut butter and cheese crakers, or those tuna and crakers in a can..or anything!

To do:
-bring magazines and sharpies, or doodle on people in them.
-make signs or posters with your friends.
-write a short story, or a list of all you and your friends' inside jokes.
-ipod, laptop,portable dvd player.
-with a flight as long as yours i'm sure they'll have head sets, and head sets have tons of things, new movies, games from various sights, and music where you can create personal playlists and stuff like that.
-also don't forget headphones, you don't want to be stuck with crappy airplane ones!

What are some ideas to keep a one year old occupied on the plane?

Any ideas of toys or things I can bring to keep her from crying and being bored?

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three children.

With little ones, less is more. What does he like at home? Often simple toys work the best.

Not all of these tips are mine but some have worked for me as well;
-Something to write and draw on. My kids like those small Magadoodles and other erasable boards. Paper and chunky crayons work too.
-Stickers. Always a winner and with so many age groups.
-Pipe cleaners, although you want to keep an eye on him while he's twisting away.
-Play dough. Don't bring too much and don't make my mistake. Take fresh play dough. I had some sitting on the shelf a bit too long (saved especially for a flight) and we had crumpled bits all over the floor!
-Books, chunky books and those with flaps are especially appreciated.
-Small plastic toys, things with wheels work well but anything without too many small parts.

No toys which make *any* noise. Not even a little, quiet noise. Played over and over and over again, your fellow passengers will not appreciate it.

Bring at least one new thing she has never seen before. Give it to her at some point when she's bored. Works like magic. If it's a long flight, you may want to bring more than one.

I have a portable DVD player but only got it once my youngest was three years old. This is a great suggestion for older kids but the problem at this tender age is that they wont wear the headphones. You cannot play it through the speakers on the aircraft (unless there's no one else in your entire section). If you are connecting and have a long layover, it might be worth taking it for your wait.

If you already have one (don't buy one unless you have other ideas for it), experiment at home. Will she wear the headphones? Or will she watch it without sound? Either will work but it is a heavy item to drag along, if you're not sure it'll earn it's place in your carry-on bag. If you do, make sure you also have the recharger (in case of delays).

I do have to admit that the babies on flights who had their car seats were calmer and slept better. This is also much, much safer than having her in your lap and guarentees your car seat, if you need it at your destination, doesn't get lost and/or broken in the hold. Ask nicely for an extra seat if you didn't purchase one.

Just some other small tips;
-Bring a change of clothes
-Bring way more diapers than you think you'll need
-Learn to change her standing up (don't try to fit her on one of those tiny babychangers and toddlers hate to lie down in strange places)
-Wean her off the bottle if she's still drinking from one (easier said than done!)
-Bring an empty sippy cup to fill during the services. This will prevent spills in the air.
-Get up and move around with her but keep an eye out. Those carts the F/A's use are the perfect height for hiding little ones
-Bring extra socks to put over her hands if she mostly crawls. This will keep her hands clean and keep her from picking up nasties on the floor.
-Bring snacks. Don't fret security. I've never had anything taken away (yes, water but not snacks) and that's the only risk. If you have something not allowed, they simply remove the item. No scenes, no speeches, no arrests!
-Try to sit in a bulkhead seat so that there's no one in front of you
-Bring slippers, especially if you're not in the bulkhead!

Is having a tv in a childs bedroom a bad idea?

AuroraBore

I have a one and two year old. And i grew up never having a tv in my bedroom.

Although I hated it when i was younger, I can appriciate why my parents did it.

Many parents today let their kids have tvs, dvd players, etc. in their bedrooms, but is this really wise?

Answer
I have trouble understanding why anyone would want their child to have a tv in their bedroom. It pulls the family apart, with each person doing something by themselves in their own personal space. wouldn't you rather have the family doing something together? It makes it hard to monitor what and when the child is watching. It makes it much more likely the kid is going to watch tv just before falling asleep (which can cause insomnia). It makes it far less likely that you're standing nearby when something that's against your values comes up on the tv, so that you can either change the channel or start having a discussion with your child. similarly, it makes it difficult to keep a conversation going about the advertisements your child sees. it keeps the tv front and center in a place where the child often is, making it more likely they will watch tv regularly.

personally, i think one tv per family is plenty (and there are 6 people in my family). there is absolutely no reason why two family members need to be watching two tv shows simultaneously. surely there's something better to do?

Korean Airlines -- What is the correct power adapter type?

Gentlehear

I'm going on Korean Airlines soon and have tried calling their customer service but the representative had no idea as to what type of power adapter can be used to power a personal laptop, dvd player, etc. in the power outlet at many of the seats.

I would like to know if anyone has used a power adapter on Korean Airlines and if they remember what type of adapter they used.

I know this is a real specific question, but perhaps someone out there has an answer! Thanks!
Well if I was hooking up an electronic kidney dialysis machine, I would cease to exist if I couldn't. Yes, I am bringing a book but I have a seven year old and Korean Airlines doesn't have any children's programming on board and this is a thirteen hour flight.
Good grief! Everyone thinks I'm bringing a laptop! No, I am not. Certainly not for a seven year old! I was planning on her using a portable dvd player since the movies in flight on Korean Airlines are not kid's movies. Believe it or not, she will have coloring books too! Yes, I will be playing with her at times too. I'm giving up on this question as the two responders basically were being judgmental and opinionated rather than helpful.

Answer
Instead of bringing a laptop for your child, bring a few toys and a coloring book for him/her. There is no law stating you MUST occupy a child with internet games.

If your child does not like coloring or playing with toys, you should play WITH him/her. Kids always love it when parents play with them and you'd like it too! Eventually your son or daughter will fall asleep from excitement and then you can read.

Also, they usually have movies playing on flights. Just buy (some airlines have them free) some headphones and have your child watch the movie.

But be prepared in case the movie isn't appropriate for your child.
