Answer
There are a lot of portable DVD players on the market today, many of them selling under $100. Check WalMart, Sears or Circuit CIty.

Also, stop in at Radio Shack. The good thing about them is that you have 30 days to return the item if you don't like it, as long as you return it in the original box and it is in re-sellable condition.

What kind of cables do I need to hook up a vcr/dvd player combo to the TV?

maureeses

I got the two in one player and I'm not sure if I could only rely on the kind of cable that screws into the line in/ line out or do I need the cable components in order to use the vcr or dvd player.

Answer
It's going to depend on what your TV supports. You'll want to use the best type of connection that your DVD/VCR and TV supports.

In descending order of preference:

* Component video
* S-video
* Composite video
* Coax (what you call the screw-in line-in/line-out)

Any of these will work, but you should make the effort to use the best connection supported by your TV and combo player.

Also, if you have a surround sound receiver, you might want to consider connecting your VCR/DVD to it for surround sound while watching movies. Most of the time this will be an optical audio cable or a digital coax cable. Again, check your manuals to see what's supported.

One final thing - when shopping for cables, avoid Monster brand. They're really expensive, and don't perform any better than cheaper cables. In reality, unless your living room is right in front of a large radar dish, even cheaper cables will work just fine. You really shouldn't need to spend more than $10-15 for any of the cables I've talked about.

Problem connecting DVD player to TV/VCR Combo?

SupaJ016

I recently inherited an old Panasonic Omnivision VCR Plus TV/VCR combo. I just plugged it in, set up the channels and stuck in a VHS tape. It works. Intending to set this up in a spare room for guests, I thought it would be nice to connect a DVD player to this as well. The TV only has two jacks on the front though: one video and one audio input. So, I plugged in these cables and connected them to the corresponding video and audio outputs on the DVD player. I get a picture but...no sound. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

Thank you.

Answer
You can convert vhs to a dvd , then play the dvd on DVD Player, here are two methods to convert VHS to DVD.
1. use dvd recorder: not need vcr and software, just record videos from vhs to dvd.
here is a guide: http://www.dvdvideosoftware.org/guide/top-7-dvd-recorder-vhs-vcr-combinations.html

2. use VCR and Software, connecting video cables, installing software, burning DVD's.

How to hook up a dvd vcr player to record a tv program?

firstquali

How to hook up my dvd vcr player to my tv and digital cable set top box (Time Warner Cable), so sometimes, i can record a program? I don't wanna subscribe a TWC DVR because i don't oftenly record. That's why i just subscribe a regular top box set. I tried a couple times to hook up my dvd vcr player (APEX ADV-3850) , but i still failed. Anybody helps. Thanks.
Is there only ANT IN and RF OUT on my dvd vcd player. There is no ANT OUT, so what should i do?
There is only ANT IN and RF OUT on my dvd vcr player. There is no ANT OUT to tv on my dvd vcr player. So, what should i do, Eddy?

Answer
First, connect the DVD/VCR to your TV. Make sure you know how to switch the TV's input so you can either watch cable, or watch a DVD in the DVD/VCR.

Ok. Now look on the back of the cable box. There should be multiple outputs - one of which is in use by your TV. What you want to do is use one of the other outputs to connect to your DVD/VCR. For best results, use the the yellow/red/white output, if possible. Connect the output from the cable box to the INPUT of the DVD/VCR.

Set your TV to use the DVD/VCR. Now set the DVD/VCR to use the input where you connected the cable box. For instance, on my deck, this is called "IN2." You should now see the output from your cable box on the TV.

Hurrah, we're almost done.

You can now pop in a VHS tape and record.

Remember - you cannot watch one channel, and record another - the signal is coming from the cable box, and it only has 1 tuner.

If you wish to make a scheduled recording, set the VCR as normal - BUT instead of specifying the channel, specify the input where the cable box is connected! (eg. "in2") Now then, you must then leave the cable box set to the channel you wish to record. The VCR cannot control the cable box - it will only record whatever output is coming from the cable box at that time. This means if you leave the cable box on "Sci-Fi", then that's what the VCR will record.

Some cable boxes allow you to create "timers" which will tell the cable box to change the channel at a specific time. This is so that an external device, like your VCR, can record a program at a specific time.

For example, say you wanted to record NBC from 8pm to 9pm, and then Sci-Fi from 9pm to 10pm. On the VCR, you would create a single recording event to go from 8pm to 10pm using the input where your cable box is. Now, on the cable box, you would create 2 timers. One would change the channel to NBC at 8pm, and the 2nd would change the channel to Sci-Fi at 9pm.

Seriously, I would consider upgrading to the DVR. Yeah, it's another $10 a month or so, but DVRs allow you to do some really powerful stuff. Furthermore, if you subscribe to the HD channels, a DVR is the only way to record those channels in their original HD format.

From using a VCR, you already know about the power of recording a show for later viewing at your convenience and how you can fast forward through the commercials. Unlike a VCR, however, you only need to tell a DVR to record a show by name (e.g. "CSI" ) The DVR then searches its internal TV guide for that show and schedules the recordings for you. Enter all your shows into the DVR, and it will figure out when to record everything. The DVR will try to avoid re-recording a rerun, so for instance, if you tell it to record South Park, you should only get each episode once a week, as opposed to that same episode 10 times a week.

The DVR will download an updated TV schedule each day, so if a show of yours gets rescheduled (which is something FOX loves to do!) you don't have to worry - the DVR will catch the change, and update its list of what to record when. Have a conflict? Sometimes a show will rerun late at night. You may not know when, but your DVR will.

This is only the simplest feature of a DVR. Trust me. Once you go DVR, you'll never, ever want to go back to live TV or a VCR. But don't pitch your VCR just yet... You can use the above setup to record a show from the DVR to your VCR, in case you want to preserve a show for your archives.

Can a VCR or DVD player send cable tv to a tv through s video connection?

kirt d

My tv's cable "screw" in back broke off but it has s video and the usual audio/video input. If I connect my tv cable to a vcr or dvd player and then connect a s video to my tv or audio/video to my tv, will tv play tv or just play dvds and vrc movies?

Answer
The VCR or DVD player must have an RF input ("screw connector"). If you have a cable box, connect it's output to the VCR or DVD and set the channel on it to 3 or 4 to match the cable box output. If you have no cable box, then connect the cable directly to the VCR or DVD. This will only work if the VCR or DVD is cable ready, and can tune through the cable channels. The VCR or DVD can be connected to your TV with the S or AV cables. Remember that the S doesn't have audio. You still need the red and white RCA cables friom the AV set. S is the preferred video cable.

How to connect dvd player to wireless network?

ricky c

I have a sony dvd player in my living room. The dvd play only has hdmi and ethernet inputs and supports Netflix. I was wondering how to connect the dvd player to the wireless modem i have in the other room. I'm completely lost.

Answer
Your DVD Player doesn't have wireless capabilities, but supports a network connection. You have several options

1. Move your router
2. Move your DVD player
3. Run a long cable to the router
4. Buy yourself one of those wireless devices that'll give you a jack right there at the player
5. Set a laptop near the player & ad hoc the network
6. Wire your entire house with network (be sure to put a jack by the player)
7. Buy a wireless dvd player & sell the one you got
8. Setup an additional router as a repeater & set it next to your player
9. Scrap the idea all together, go get a roku or a ps3 to watch netflix
10. That's bout all I got right now.

What video format do portable DVD players play?

Y2HBK [

im a making a DVD 2 play on my portable DVD and i .AVI and .MP4 and they dont work

what format should i convert my vids 2 next for it 2 work on my player?

i have the model polaroid dvd player pdv-0713B

Answer
All DVD players play the DVD-Video format, which is a DVD-specific format which uses MPEG, but is far different than simply dropping an MPEG file onto a DVD-R.

Others play DivX or XViD AVIs, but probably no others.. AVI is really a computer format, since it's just a container.. there can be any kind of video or audio inside. A computer can see something it doesn't know, ask you to download it, etc. A DVD player doesn't have room for downloads, even if it did have the internet connection.

You need to create a DVD-Video disc in order to play this on you Polaroid. It does suppoort DVD-R/RW... but it still needs to be a DVD-Video disc. This requires some kind of DVD creation or authoring program.

If you're technically inclined, you can find some free tools to help with this on http://www.videohelp.com. but they can be a bit complex to use. They also have a list of commerical and shareware apps on VideoHelp.

Upconverting DVD Players: Component vs. HDMI?

Jeff H

I have a couple of upconverting DVD players that I am looking at, mainly the Denon and Samsung HD960. I am leaning towards the Samsung but just read that it won't upconvert over 480p on component .... which makes little sense to me. It says in the brochure that it needs HDMI for 1080p upconverting but the review I read says that he spoke to Samsung and they say that to upconvert over 480p requires HDMI. Does this makes any sense? To me, no. So, my question is ... are there upconverting DVD players that some would recommend that will upconvert over component (since my receiver does not have HDMI)? I am not sure what I would lose if I went from my DVD to the TV with HDMI and then from the receiver to the TV via optical.

Answer
Most DVD's that upscale to 1080P have to do so over HDMI since no display I am aware of is capable of 1080P thru anything BUT HDMI. If you want to scale to resolutions other than 480P via component, this defeats the copy protection which is why DVD players don't allow this. Look at the Oppo 970 and then do a search for a hack that allows you do do upscaling over component. Note...I am not telling you to INSTALL this clearly illegal hack, but you can look at it for curiosity's sake.

If you DO have a display capable of 1080P, definitely run your DVD direct to the TV via HDMI. Even if your receiver had HDMI inputs, you may end up doing this anyways since many receivers are having HDCP handshake problems due to the repeater circuits (hopefully they have this problem fixed on the new generation units being introduced at CES as we speak). Simply run an optical cable for the digital audio stream to the receiver...there is no loss. Either that or buy a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player so you can take advantage of a TV that has 1080P capability. Note, a standard DVD scaled to 1080P is NOT the same as a high definition HD DVD or Blu Ray DVD. The new Toshiba HD XA-2 HD-DVD has awesome standard DVD scaling...better than some high end scalers, so you get the best of both worlds.

Is there a dvd player with an HDMI INPUT?

Clint

I have netflix on my laptop, but I want to be able to view it on my Tv... my Tv doesn't have an HDMI or VGA port, just the red, yellow, white, blue, and green components. My laptop has the HDMI and VGA ports. I already bought a Dvd player that I thought had the HDMI, but it was an output only. So, is it possible to even do this? To plug my laptop into a Dvd player with an HDMI cable, and then plug the Dvd player into my Tv with the components, and be able to watch netflix from my laptop? Its complicated, I know, but worth it I think if possible.

Answer
I'm quite certain there is not (not only no HDMI In but no Component In either). I wouldn't be surprised to learn that someone has cobbled something together and they may be in some countries where little attention is paid to copyright issues, but commercially and widely available DVD Recorders (you said Player, but what would a player do with an Input?), No. Content owners and equipment manufacturers (and in some cases, like Sony, for example, these are all in one company) got together long ago and decided to not make it simple for people to record High Def on a Set Top Box (STB). Of course along came Tivo and other DVR/PVR makers and of course we can all now do that anyway (but making a DVD and taking it somewhere else is, while possible, a bit tricky).
Your best bet, IMO, is to just use your component (Red/Green/Blue video and Red/White - Right/Left audio) cables from the DVD player to the TV - you'll get HD that way. Of course that still leaves getting the laptop Netfilx to the TV - that;s a whole other discussion...
BTW - I just noticed you mentioned Yellow - Yellow is not component, it is Composite - where Component uses 3 cable (R/G/B) for video, Composite puts all parts of the video on one cable (Yellow) and it is therefore not HD. Are you sure you have R/G/B? If you do, try my suggestion. If not, you're stuck with Composite (and frankly, I'd be surprised that a TV w/Components does not also have VGA or HDMI - HDMI was established over 10 years ago, about the time HD began to be common).

How set Windows Media Player 12 as default DVD player under Windows 8?

PaweK198

I would also like to know if you can play a DVD trough Video player on Metro Interface

Answer
Windows 8 cannot play DVD movies. You'll have to download DVD movie playback software for that, like VLC.

To set WMP as the default go to the start screen.

Type the word default and the Default Programs tile will appear.

Click that and it'll open Default Programs in the Control Panel.

Click the Set your default programs link.

A list of programs will appear in the right hand side of the window. Scroll to the bottom to find Windows Media Player and click to select it.

Once it's selected click the Set this program as default button.

WMP is now you default player.

Why are the TOSHIBA HD players so differently priced ranging from 250$ to 750$?

totalrecal

Toshiba uses Blue Laser and HD VMD uses Red Laser in their HD Players. Does this make a difference for he consumer? If HD VMD sells for 250$ and offers 1080p resolution is it not good enough? Does Toshiba offer anything more than HD VMD?

Answer
Toshiba currently has 3 players ranging a street price of about $200 to $750 US. The lowest priced (HD-A2) is adequate for most people and is sold at a 'bargain" price to promote sales to the average consumer. The middle model (HD-A20, $100 more than the HD-A2) has 1080p output rather than 1080i, but is otherwise the same. The highest priced model (HD-X2) offers a better (and more expensive) scaling chip and 1080p output.

Frankly, the HD-X2 is way overpriced (and Toshiba has apparently recognized this because the 3rd generation model that will replace it (HD-A35) has a MSRP of $499 US.

The replacement for the HD-A2 (HD-A3) at $299 and for the HD-A20 (the HD-A30) at $399 show a more logical and defensible price scale.

In addition the upper level 3rd generation models will handle HDMI 1.3 and output 1080p/24 fps ... desirable features, but unfortunately ones few consumers have equipment to exploit.

Bottom line is for the average consumer there is no reason to buy the higher priced models, and frankly the current price differential is only to take advantage of the early adopter that cares more about having the latest and "best" more than the cost.

VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disk) is an attempt first introduced in China and India now being tried in Europe to provide an alternative to HD DVD (and Blu-Ray). It has some good points but has no support from major Western movie studios (so far limited to Bollywood and a few European houses). So, HD DVD offers HD versions of some major films while Blu-Ray offers others ... so if these are your interest VMD is not very useful. If you are interested in HD versions of films supported on VMD it may be a viable option.

Frankly, I find normal DVDs on a good upscaling Player give a pretty darn good picture (and I have an HD player too) and the DVDs are available much cheaper and for a much wider choice of films.

The future of blue laser disks (and VMD) is very much up in the air. Unless the format war ends it is likely some other format / mechanism (e.g. online movies) will be the successor to DVD ... not either HD DVD or Blu-Ray (or VMD).

The three links provide info on the above. Hope this helps.

can i watch tv on my portable dvd player? ?

Q. the only reason i am asking is because my parents want let me get a tv but i have a tv port thing in my room so i was wondering if i could use something to plug the dvd player in to it and get tv?

Answer
That depends on your portable DVD player. If it has a video-in port, then there's most likely a way to get TV in there. You'll probably need the cable (or satellite) box hooked up to the port in your room, and the DVD player hooked to the box. You may also need a special cable or adapter to get that second connection going.

Of course, if your DVD player doesn't have a video-in port, you can't do it at all.

portable DVD player?

.:

I want to buy a portable DVD player.

Must have 10 inch screen or LOWER
Great quality
Well known company [not a must but I'd like so]

Answer
Everyone should have a portable DVD player because they can be hooked up to a TV like a regular DVD player.

I bought a LG® Portable DVD Player (2007) with 7" Screen LPA837, a CENTRIOS⢠(2006, The Source/old Radio Shack) brand 7" PORTABLE DVD PLAYER, and a Casio EV-680 3-inch portable TV.

I have been overall safisfied with all 3 products, and like taking my DVD player to go through a lot of CDs in libraries.

I just bought the LG because I'm loyal to Sears, and this was the only model with a USB port at Sears. I don't like to shop.

A must for a portable DVD player is a USB port, so I can enjoy MP3/WMA music, JPEG images, or DivX MPEG videos from my computer on my DVD player or on my TV using the audio/visual jacks.

My Centrios battery lasted 2 hours, and the smaller LG batter lasts 3 hours, 20 minutes. An annoyance is my LG won't charge while I'm watching it, but the Centrios can do both at the same

My LG better for viewing JPEG images because often to fill the screen with a portrait, I have to put the DVD player on its side, but the shapes and locations of jacks on the Centrios make this difficult. time.

I still wish my portable TV (maybe even a radio) were built into my portable DVD. player, and my last 2 links list some; however Synco is a Chinese company that I don't know, and the player referred to in Yahoo Answers has no USB port.

My Casio TV has been good too, but the rechargeable batteries only last about 1 hr., so I use a universal adapter for both my Casio TV and cell phone, and just find places to plug it in. I wish it had a radio because batteries do last a long time using radios. Portable TVs are hard to find in stores, so you should use the internet.

The 3 inch screen on the Casio TV is too small for watching any sports because the ball is small. Reception is a problem in about half of the locations you try. The biggest problem with my Casio TV is it is not stereo, which can make it harder to listen too, so I just take out the earphones usually.

Make sure you don't get told you are stealing power. At $0.11/kWh in Alberta, Canada, it costs hardly anything, but it's the principle.

Best progressive scan DVD player with HDMI output for the money?

daniel1120

Ok, so I want to know the most cost effective DVD player I can get. The requirements are that it must be progressive scan, have an HDMI output (maybe composite if its too expensive), and if it can, upgrade my cable signal to a better viewing (ie 480p or 720p). I want to spend the least amount of money possible, but don't know what brand/model to go with or where to get it, so could someone please tell me which one to go with (model number) and where to get it? Thank you.

Answer
Oppo, they rule. I guess they are new, but for the money, they have the best picture sound and the most features

they go not 1080i but 1080p, that is crazy for the price that you get them for, I am still trying to figure out how a machine that is like 200+ is equal to a 1000 Denon

you can get the oppo on Amazon, or run it thur Yahoo. shopping

crazy cool stuff, if this is too much money, any norally DVD will do, check Woot.com every day, some times they go up there for like $70 with everthing in the world, but worlds away form what you get with a Oppo

R the new upconvert dvd players worth the money is the picture any better than a regular dvd player ?

Kelly

Answer
An up-converting DVD player doesn't do anything that your TV doesn't do. The question is, how well does it do it compared to the TV's processor. You can't expect a $99 DVD player to do a better job than your TV will. In fact, using one can result in a poorer picture. one absurdity is using a DVD player to upscale to 1080P or i, and then have the TV downscale to 720P. Guaranteed way to degrade your picture. There are stand alone processors that will do a better job than your TV, but these are generally more expensive than the TV.
A top shelf up-scaling DVD player, probably will do a better job of up-scaling than your TV, but these are in the $300 to $400 range.

How to get MP4's to work on Win Media Player for Windows 7 64 bit?

matty

Hi Guys and Girls, I have been trying for the past two hours to get an MP4 file to work on Media player or even DIVX, I have windows 7 64 bit, most codec's are for 32 bit, and i did find one but it failed miserably. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Answer
Hi, you could go with vlc as the other answerer suggest or try these codec packs below to make wmp play all your files. They both work on 64-bit systems. They are shark007 and media player codec pack, shark007 is my favorite. I use media player codec pack on the computer I'm on now and shark007 on my other computer.

Shark007 is my favorite because it can associate all files to naturally open in wmp unlike media player codec pack, theres also great plugins for windows media center in shark007 tools section of the site.

1. Warning number 1, you never want more than one codec pack at a time or you will have conflicts.

2. Warning number 2, shark007 does not contain a virus. It is a false positive in which the owner shark007 has already submitted to the major antivirus companies for review.

http://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com/ (Official site for media player codec pack. It supports wmp and any player capable of directshow filters. I suggest you go here and read up on the pack first.) The only thing It will not do is associate the files to play in wmp, you must do that yourself by right clicking on the file and choose to always open with wmp. It will make wmp play your mp4 files and many other files including dvd's!

Media player codec pack can make wmp play: .mkv | .avi | .flv | .mp4 | .m4v | .m4a | .ogm | .flac | .ape | .aac | .ogg | .mpc and many more.

............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Here is shark007. Since you have windows 7 64-bit, you have to install the windows 7 32-bit codecs then install the shark007 x64 addon component to after to make it work. All download links are at the bottom and take you to majorgeeks site for the download.

In the shark007 options window under the help tab click "windows filetype association" this will make wmp the default for all files.
