What is the difference in video quality from HDMI DVD player versus Progressive Scan Player?

cran

I have an HDTV and looking for a new DVD player. How does the picture quality on a progressive scan DVD player compare with one of the new HDMI DVD players? Will the HDMI produce near-HD quality? Is it worth the extra $100-200 for the player and the special cable?

Thanks!

Answer
Progressive scan refers to the way the image is displayed. The image is non-interlaced providing a sharper image quality and is not directly related to HDMI, HDMI is the video connection.

HDMI is a high definition output provided by some DVD players, especially high end ones. HDMI is an all digital output again that preserves image quality. The competitor to HDMI is DVI which is similar in that, it too outputs an all digital signal.

There are two types of HDMI, type A is backwards compatible with DVI, type B HDMI is designed to support image resolutions higher than 1080p which is where most high definition TVs max out.

Basically what I'm saying is that progressive scan is how the image is displayed and HDMI is the output signal, the two combined together provide the best image quality.

Whether you use DVI or HDMI is of almost no consequence but you will want to pick one or the other (or whichever one is supported on your TV).

Let me try this again, any DVD player equipped with HDMI outputs will support progressive scan and the same goes for a player that has a DVI video connection.

Yes, it is worth the extra cables and player price.

I am getting ready to buy a Dodge Grand Caravan and would like to get an overhead DVD player installed in it. How much does something like this cost? Do you think it would be cheaper to get it done somewhere else or have the dealership do it when I buy it?
Not sure if it matters but I might be buying a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Answer
If you haven't purchased the vehicle yet, then this may work in your favor when negotiating with the dealership. Simply tell them that it's a feature that is necessary to have, and it's a deciding factor in your final vehicle selection. Newer vehicles do sometimes offer the option of having the overhead DVD player installed by the factory. Otherwise, maybe you can make a deal with a dealership to pay for an overhead DVD player install, or split the cost 50/50. The cheapest unit I've seen online was around $200 and install will probably run around $200.

How to modify my vcd player to be a dvd player ?

Q. I have old vcd player and i do not have money to buy dvd player
So how to modify it ?

Answer
You can't. At least not without spending a great deal more money than it would cost to actually buy a DVD player. DVD players can be bought at yard sales for about $5.00, or at second-hand shops such as Goodwill for about $10.00. You can get new ones at Walmart for less than $50.00.

The optics for a VCD player are identical to a CD. DVD uses something different, so you would need to change these. The transport mechanism is also different, as is the CODEC. The computer would be controlling different mechanisms, and is a dedicated controller, so that would need to be changed.

About the only things you would be able to keep are the tray on which the disk is placed, the buttons in the front, the case for the player and the jacks to connect to your TV. Really, you would be building a DVD player from scratch.

Buy a DVD player, it's cheaper.

I would like to hook my DVD player to my computer because my CD/DVD rom drive is broken. How can I do this, and will my computer recognize the DVD player as a drive?

Answer
You would need a TV Tuner card to be able to do that.

If your DVD player has composite output, then you should look for a TV Tuner card with composite input.

Then again, replacing the DVD drive would probably be less expensive than buying a TV Tuner card, so buying a new DVD drive is probably the better choice.

Is it possible to use a DVD player with a Computer Monitor?

iKING

I want to use a dvd player with a computer monitor.

Answer
Yes, but you more than likely will need an adapter, as most DVD players I've seen only have composite (yellow AV), S-video, and component outputs, and most monitors only have VGA, DVI, or HDMI inputs. Although I have seen some monitors with composite inputs.
You may need one of these: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=vga+to+s-video&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=15223743978350771745&ei=oBrZSeupHpestgf73KnhDw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&resnum=1&ct=result#ps-sellers
And a set of speakers of course.

Why is it hard to find portable blu-ray players?

Grendleand

Portable dvd players are plentiful and cheap. Portable blu-ray players are rare. Why is this?

Answer
The point of BluRay is to contain HDTV video. To have a portable BluRay player - the screen would have to support HD video as well. HD is kind of pointless for a 9 inch screen.

Many big titles come in a Combo Pack with a BluRay, DVD and a digital download code. If you want to take a movie on the go - you get the digital download and watch it on your phone or tablet. Or better yet -stream from Netflix/Hulu, etc.

With all these alternatives - why create a mechanical device to play BluRay on a tiny screen?

How to play a video i recorded using my dvd player recorder?

Answer Giv

I recorded me playing my video game on Youtube for a Lets Play and i can view the video/audio on my dvd player but when i put it on my computer it says the CD is blank but it isn't. It is viewable on my dvd but not my computer.( 10 points to best answer)

Answer
Your recorder used a format the computer doesn't recognize. You need to check the manufacturer's site to find out what format was used and then find a matching plug in for your computer.

Another option: If you have video/audio out (for connecting the recorder to a TV) and video/audio in on your computer, you may be able to play it from the recorder into your computer just like using an external CD/DVD drive.

I know this can be done on Macs, (I've done it many times with DVDs and VCR tapes) but you'll need a PC person to talk you through the set up on a PC.

What's the best way to simplify a VCR/TV/DVD player/Cable setup?

My 80 year old mom currently has a tv, a DVD player, a VCR, and a Comcast cable box. She uses the VCR to tape one program (East Enders) after she goes to bed. Everything is of different brands. The tv is pretty good, but the DVD player and VCR are low end.

Her current setup requires her to use 3 remote controls, so it's a bit of a mess. What's an affordable way to simplify her setup so she has ideally only one remote control? Thank you.

Answer
Buy a universal remote you may need to set up remote for her.

How do I interconnect a vcr, a dvd player, and my cable box?

Jo

It's an older tv and there aren't enough connections on the back to plug them in seperately. If I connect the dvd player and the VCR together, and then to the tv, won't that work? I used to know how to do this but I can't for the life of me remember how, now.

Answer
I have experienced this same problem. There are a few possible solutions, but by far the easiest and best way is to buy an inexpensive Passive Audio-Video Switcher. These are little boxes that you plug everything into and connect to your TV. There's a button for each input, making switching between devices very straight-forward. You can usually find them for between $10 and $50 at electronic stores like Radio Shack, Best Buy or through Amazon.com.

But you may be able to solve this with what you already have. If your TV has two inputs, you could try routing your Cable Box through your VCR and then into TV input #1. Then plug your DVD player directly into TV input #2. This setup may work just fine, and also allow you to record Cable shows on your VCR. However, I would not recommend running your DVD player into your VCR, since most VCRs are equipped with copy protection circuitry, making DVD playback look bad or in some cases not work at all. If your TV only has one input for of these devices, then I would go with the switcher box solution.

Hope that helps.

How do I get my portable DVD player to run off it's battery?

best dual portable dvd players image

dixonjj13

I bought an Insignia dual screen portable DVD player at Best Buy. I have returned 2 so far because I can't get them to play using battery power. I have called the Insignia help line 3 times with no success. I have tried plugging the unit in for 24+ hrs to charge the battery - both with the unit on and with the unit off. I assume that I should be able to play a movie, and remove the power plug to let the battery take over.....or turn the unit on without having the power cord plug in.....I can't do either. I can't find any switch to engage the battery....can't find any settings in the menus of the DVD player....and can't find any instructions about the battery in the manual. The helpline insists that it has an internal battery and that it should last about 2.5 hrs. I thought I was a smart guy, but I'm feeling very dumb......please help!

Answer
Hello,

I am sorry. I searched and searched and I was unable to find anything that said that there was a battery inside the "dual screen unit". Looking at the website, Insignia has many other portable DVD players. I am thinking that when someone said that they had a battery they were referring to those other units. I even looked through the manual and there was NO mention of a battery, internal or otherwise, except for in the remote control. This may be why you had two other units that wouldn't work off of "battery" power. Insignia only sells one dual screen unit (active and discontinued). Do you recall where you got the information that there was a battery? When the unit was plugged in, did you notice any icon that indicated that a battery was charging (a light, maybe)?? If I get further information maybe I will be able to help you more, I apologize for not being more helpful. (Hey, at least you're not dumb :) ) SMILE and be merry.

Do portable DVD players kill your car battery?

Justin

We have dual screen Phillips portable dvd player and the last few times we have used it, we have noticed that after using it the day before for a couple of hours, we have trouble starting our car. It is plugged into the adapter provided by the mini-van. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution?
The battery is about a week old.

Answer
it is like leaving your parkers on for a few hours, there is a bit of draw off the battery. you could upgrade your battery to a bigger capacity or you could have an accessory battery that only the screens run off, you could rig it up to the charging system with the appropriate items so it will charge itself.

how old is your battery? maybe it is a sign your battery is a little worse for wear.

I am trying to record from my television onto a VHS tape. I have one of those dvd/vhs combo player things.
I have tried to experiment with all kinds of channels and settings, but everytime I try to play back what I've "recorded", it just plays that black and white fuzzy screen.
I currently have my vhs/dvd player hooked up directly to the television, not the cable box. And I'm using a coax cord, I think it's called.
What am I doing wrong?

Answer
ok, you are getting no picture. that is a real oddity because almost all modern video displays substitute a blue picture when there is no video, called "video muting". so i am thinking you have something broken, take it to a service shop.

How do I find out if my VCR player will play PAL format tapes?

tricksy_ma

I have a Magnavox MWR20V6 dvd/vhs combo and also an RCA VR355, I wanted to get a movie off Ebay, but it is ONLY available in PAL format.

Answer
You don't say what country you are in. If you are in the United States, then your VCR will most likely NOT play a video in PAL format. PAL format is used in areas such as South America, Asia, and Australia. The format is not compatible with US television. In the US we use the NTSC standard (and now ATSC for hi-def).

best portable dvd players for kids reviews image
Q. Ideas to keep four kids from driving me nucking futsages from 15 to 8. I plan on buying a portable dvd playerbut I know that wont last three days in the car.Help please.

Answer
Well welcome to the Show Me State! You have a great idea about bringing the portable DVD player; they do sell a âpowerâ stripe that plugs into your lighter in the car. Coleman makes it and it cost about $25. Might be worth getting so you donât use up all of your battery power. They make portable travel games like Connect 4, Battleship, Sorry and that type of thing; they are cheap and fun and can be found at places like Wal-Mart or your local toy store. I would also bring things like crosswords, word searches and Mad Libs. This will keep the kids busy for a while and cheap form of entertainment. If you have some hand held video games bring those for the kids to do. If you donât have a system they sell hand held games pretty cheap and again it will keep the kids busy for a while. Why not give each kid a disposable camera and a âjournalâ or scrap book they can write about their journey and add the pictures later. Great way for them to preserve their memories of the move. Let the kids help with the trip, the ones that are old enough have them be the co-pilot for a while and read the map. Have each kid pick out a place they want to stop at before you go. That way they feel like they helped. Bring a deck of UNO Cards or playing cards, go fish can last forever! I would also bring paper, crayons, and maybe even color pages. The kids can draw for something to do. Make up a family CD of music have each person pick some songs they like and make a mixed CD.
There are plenty of car games that the family can play. 20 Questions is good, or I Spy takes up some time. Play car bingo you can either make up boards or print them from the web. Play Finish That Story have one person start and continue on to the rest of the car. Counting Cows game who ever gets the most wins. License Plate lingo is good, try to make words out of the letters on the plate such as GLD is girls like diamonds. License plate bingo make up boards with different states whoever gets bingo wins. License plate game keep a running tally of states that are different then yours again whoever gets the most wins. There is also Get 100 have everyone pick out a color, next they have to spot 100 things with that color. Whoever gets to 100 first wins. Slug Bug is always a good game, the slugging part is always optional. Take some trivia cards and ask each other questions, whoever gets the most right wins. Here are some other game suggestions:
TWO TRUTHS AND ONE LIE: The player tells the group three statements about himself or herself. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone tries to guess which one is the lie.
GEOGRAPHY: Can be played with animals also. Start with an animal or a place name --California, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of "California"
BUILDING WORDS: Build a word one letter at a time. Each successive player adds a letter and must have a real word in mind.
BUZZ: Try to reach 100 without making a mistake. Every time you get to a number that's divisible by seven (7, 14, 21) or has a seven in it (17), say "Buzz" instead of the number.
THE CAR NEXT DOOR: Invent stories about people in the car next to yours.
ALPHABET WORDS: Pick a letter and find words or objects starting with that letter. Move through the alphabet. Or play as a memory game - A is for apple; B is for __. The second player must remember what "A" was for, and so on through the alphabet.
SCAVENGER HUNT IN THE CAR: Make up a list of things to find along the road. Work as individuals or together as teams.

Here are some helpful travel game sites that we use to plan our trips:
http://roadtripplanning.com/road-trip-games.html
http://www.momsminivan.com/
This site has some really good ideas!

http://www.kidzworld.com/article/4707-road-trip-games-and-activities
http://www.radroadtrips.com/

I would also bring pillows so they can SLEEP that is always good! Be sure to bring a cooler with drinks and snacks. Have the kids go shopping with you and pick out things. I also recommend stopping at the rest stops for lunch, bring sandwiches, chips and veggies. Stop for lunch at the rest stop the kids can play on the playground or run around and get some energy out. If you can bring a ball and a bat or Frisbee something like that so they can play a game or two. When all else fails ear plugs (ha ha ha). Have a great trip if you let me know your route to MO I might be able to suggest some places, drive from MO to CA a lot. Good-luck on your move!

How do I know I have Mountain Lion on my mac?

top dvd players 2012 on ... Tuner & Usb/sd Inputs & Dvd Player Best Offer JosDigitalTVTuner.com
top dvd players 2012 image

Eli

I know nothing about computers. I have a Mac Os x ver 10.8.3, How do I know I have it? What does it do? and How do i get it?

Answer
You say... "I have a Mac Os x ver 10.8.3"

and... "How do I know I have it?"

Huh? You can't claim you have it and then ask if you have it.

That's like "I have ten bucks. How do I know I have it?"

In fact, your computer has that, not you. It is software. It is Mountain Lion. All Mac OS X have code names like this....

10.0 = Cheetah
10.1 = Puma
10.2 = Jaguar
10.3 = Panther
10.4 = Tiger
10.5 = Leopard (released 2007-10-26)
10.6 = Snow Leopard (released 2009-8-28)
10.7 = Lion (released 2011-7-20)
10.8 = Mountain Lion (released 2012-7-24)

Go to the top menu bar, Apple logo > About This Mac. In that small window, you can see what the computer has. All Mac computers built after 2012-7-23 have Mountain Lion (OS 10.8.x).

These definitions may help....
ââ> Mac = Macintosh computer. (Various types, such as iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air)

ââ> Apple, Inc. = the company that makes all Mac computers.

ââ> OS = operating system, a system of apps that make up the basic software for a home computer. Some of that software is rather essential; other bits are extras, such as iTunes or DVD Player.

ââ> app = application (software that serves an exact purpose of accomplishing something useful. You can think of it as the same thing as "program" to a PC geek, but in fact, a program runs, an app does something or allows your doing something, so an app is a useful program.

ââ> X = Roman numeral with a value of ten (when speaking of "OS X"). Another use of X is an unknown value, as in "Please solve this equation for X: 17 + X = 20." A third use of X is a substitute for a signature if someone is illiterate, as in "Please mark your X at the end of the contract."

Do people shout "Eli is brilliant!"? If not, remedy that by reading, such as at http://en.wikipedia.org That's how you can look up the meaning of "Mountain Lion" and at least a hundred other things.

For general guidance in using the computer, try the links below.

Can I make it to pro tennis?

ChrisAweso

I'm 14 years old and I started playing tennis about a year and a half ago after going to Wimbledon for the first time. I fell in love with the sport, I think about it day and night and now my ultimate dream is to go pro. In my club they say i'm talented and I've been called 'Federer' cause of my playing style like his. Of course they say i have things to work on, mainly serve and volleys but I am willing to work. I am going to start LTA tournaments and hopefully work my way up. I heard that Sam Querry's first international tournament was the junior US open where he lost in the quaters against andy murray so I have some time right? Nice and Informative answers appreciated, no hate please. Thanks.

@Damir
Please Do not answer this question unless you are going to give me constructive ways that I can become pro and in a nice way. Thank you.

a. You're good at, and
b. You enjoy doing,
in case tennis doesn't pan out the way you hoped that it would.

I have no idea how far you'll go in tennis. A lot depends on your support system, your coaches, your drive and willingness to work, sportsmanship, winning record, etc etc etc. If you've played other "ball sports" before your started tennis, that should help a bit.

You will need to work very, very hard, because a number of young people you'll be going up against will have started tennis several years before you did. Some of them will get tired of it and quit, of course. You and your coaches are going to have to do everything correctly, which is not easy.

There are a number of pitfalls you must conquer (or just avoid) along the way. Do not try to do everything by yourself. It's inefficient, and it just plain does not work.

The ATP World Tour has about 2000 players in the singles ranking list at the moment. The vast majority of them are not allowed to participate in the qualies for the Grand Slam events:
http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx?d=31.12.2012&r=1501&c=#

The media tends to spend all their time talking about players in the top ten or so, and ignore the other 1,990 players. They don't want to "disappoint you" with the reality that becoming as successful as Federer is fairly similar to winning the lottery.

***In my club they say i'm talented and I've been called 'Federer' cause of my playing style like his. Of course they say i have things to work on, mainly serve and volleys but I am willing to work. I am going to start LTA tournaments and hopefully work my way up.***

Nice of your club members to compliment you prior to playing your first tournament match. Try not to pay much attention to people who don't understand how difficult tennis really is. At least they're being nice, that's always good :-)

All the best, hope you at least have some fun with it once in a while, and win your share of matches and/or tournaments :-)

If i have a 1080i tv is it pointless to get a 1080p hd dvd player?

Also can i play a 1080p hd dvd on my 1080i tv and do i have to have a 1080p hd dvd player or can i use a 1080i one?

Answer
You probably have a 720p/1080i TV and NO it is not pointless to get an HD player.
The player can be set to output in 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. Even at 720p the picture will look great.
Technology always moves on, I am sure your next TV will be 1080p.

How do i hook up a surround system with no hdmi to an hdtv and dvd player?

Kris

Can I run my dvd player to my tv via hdmi and than my tv to my receiver and play the sound from my dvd player to the surround that way? I am so lost... My surround sound system is an onkyo ht-s990thx 7.1 and my tv is a mitsubishi 1080p and my dvd player is a sony.

Answer
If your Sony DVD player has HDMI output, then yes, connect it to the TV's HDMI input.

You didn't say what model DVD player you have, but it probably doesn't include audio in the HDMI output. For that you need a separate digital audio cable, which you'll connect from the DVD player to the Onkyo receiver, not the TV.

There are two kinds of digital audio connections, optical and coaxial. Depending on what kind of output your DVD player has, you'll need either a TOSlink optical cable or an RCA coaxial cable.

Using this cable, connect the DVD player's digital audio output to the Onkyo receiver's digital audio input (the Onkyo has both types). These cables are cheap, less than $5.

Then you'll have great picture and sound, although you'll have to switch the Onkyo to the correct audio input to hear the DVD audio.

How can I make a DVD player with USB port (for removable drive) see a drive on my network?

JJ Walker

I have a Philips DVD player with a USB port. It can see USB sticks and almost all removable external USB hard drives. How can I use the USB port to see a drive on my network?

Answer
1. Check to see what kind of inputs the video card on your computer has. To do this, turn your computer around so you can get a good look at the back. Be on the lookout for any jacks to accommodate red, white and yellow composite video cables, red, blue and green component video cables, S-Video cables or HDMI cables. Any and all of these can be used to connect a DVD player to a PC. If none of these inputs are present, then you will be unable to connect the two devices without upgrading your computer.

2. Check the back of the DVD player to see which type of cable you'll need to connect it to your PC. Normally DVD players have a few different types of cable inputs on the back, so generally one of the types should have a corresponding connection on your computer's video card.

3. Get the appropriate cables. Composite, component, S-Video and HDMI cables are available at any major electronics retailer. Once you have them in hand, plug one end of each cable into the appropriate color-coded input on the DVD player. Then plug the other end into the corresponding color-coded input on your video card.

4. To use your DVD player with your computer, simply open the software that came with your video card. This software will be able to recognize and operate the DVD player, no matter the brand, through the connected cables. Next all you have to do is insert a DVD into the DVD player and use your computer as a television monitor.

5. If your current video card doesn't have any of the inputs and you still want to connect your DVD player to your computer, you can buy a new video card. It should be available from any major electronics retailer. Be sure to write down all the inputs and outputs that are on the back of your DVD player and get a video card that has the right capabilities.

A graphics card plugs directly into the motherboard of a computer. To install a new one simply turn off your computer and remove the case, exposing the insides. Remove the old graphics card from its slot and plug the new one in its place. Once this is done you can reattach the computer's case and turn it back on. Install any software and drivers that came with your graphics card (usually contained on CDs or DVDs inside the package) and it will be ready to use.

Hope this helps.

is a smart tv worth it if I already have a smart dvd player?

best dvd players with wifi on Best Car Seat Ibiza, Top blanco ibiza on Alibaba.com
best dvd players with wifi image

Steve

I'm on the verge of buying a new HDTV. I already have a "smart" DVD player (wifi access, netflix, etc.). I'm unhappy with the kind of fidelity I get over that link. is there any reason I could expect better from a Smart TV?

Answer
A DVD player is a standard def device. That is why you have poor video.

Look into a small device called a "Media Server". My personal favorite is the Western Digital TV Live but a lot of people love the new Roku 3 box's. These both sell for $99.

You use HDMI to hook these up (so you in theory can get 1080 video) but these box's get updates every few weeks to play computer video files or improve the 'channels' and features. Smart BluRay players - get updates perhaps every 6 months or so. The "smart" features are kind of a "add-on" and not the main goal of disk players so rarely see improvements.

The one exception is if you are considering the higher end Samsungs with the "Smart Hub" feature. This got a great review in last Feb Home Theater magazine. They run the streaming video through the televisions internal up-conversion circuits and this produced a better image than the reviewers Roku box would for Netflix and Hulu. Samsung .. seems to have done things right with their system. I have never heard anything positive about Vizio, Panasonic, Sony or even Sharp 'smart' features.

I own a network Panasonic blu ray player - it works but the 8 apps are ... basic.

I have the WD TV Live box and it plays nearly every video file I throw at it, it works streaming from my PC, from a USB flash drive or a USB hard drive. (smart disk players and HDTV's tend to NOT work with HDD drives).

I recently got a Samsung 6300 with the Smart Hub and it does work pretty well, but I have not done an exhaustive playing around with it yet.

For the moment - the external media servers are my recommendation.

Why is my netflix live stream on my tv so pixelated?

I'mTired

Has anyone encountered this problem before? I just set up a dvd player with wifi and my netflix picture has been super crappy? I have a panasonic 15" plasma. Is this the internet connection, netflix or my tv's fault?

Answer
Wifi might not be getting a good signal

Q. I'm trying to hook up my playstation to my portable dvd player that has two screens.... I plug my playstation into one of the screens and it works fine but i can't connect the screens together after i plug in my playstation because there is no other red yellow and white holes to plug them into....... Is there a cable I can buy to do this? like a y adapter or something?

Answer
U got it....u need a Y adapter to convert the av red and white sound cables to the universal headphone jack.
U need something similar to this but the av has to be female input. because the av from ur ps is male connectors.

edit: If ur portable dvd player has no audio input then u need the adapter to have a female headphone jack so u can connect ur headphones to it.

Is there a blu-ray dvd player i can attach a external hard drive to?

justin

I'm looking for a blu-ray DVD player that I can attach a external hard drive to. I want to be able to download movies from my computer to the external hard drive an be able to watch it on my HD 1080p TV. Not just movies I want to be able to listen to music as well.

Answer
Some of the BluRay players are 'smart' and will play a few file formats from a USB drive.

But most televisions and BluRay players will NOT work with a USB hard drive.

If you want to do this - get a media server. Look at the Western Digital TV Live box. This thing WILL work with USB hard drives, gives you 20+ apps for YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, etc. It will also work wirelessly from your PC. The WD box plays most file formats include .MP3's.

A cheaper version is the Roku2 units for about $60, but it does not play as many file formats.

Hope this helps.
