dvd player?

maro

My comp did not come with a dvd player to watch movies on it is windows xp. so is it posible to download one from the internet and then play movies or do i need to go and buy and have someone install a dvd player?on my comp, thanks, Roseanna

Answer
A DVD player is hardware so it would be kinda hard to download.

If your computer did not come with a DVD player it may not have a video card able to support one either. If you have a computer repair shop in your area, check them out. You can probably get a used one for the same price as the upgrade would cost you.

Which is the best multimedia player in linux ?

Bagga

I'm looking for best multimedia player in linux. Like winamp, musicmatch in windows.

Answer
My favourite player is VLC Player. VLC stands apart from other player in the category of mutlimedia players. VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently. Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired.

The best part is that it can even play parts of corrupted files, which other player cannot do. Even if you don't have codecs of a particular file format, it will play it.

Its also very light on memory and the processor.

The only con of this player is that its interface is too plain, no sophistication, not that good a GUI. But if you are looking for some serious Mutimedia playing, this is right for the job.

You can download it from:

What would be a good DVD player download

Shyness

I'd like to know what would be a good DVD player download with a good Codec package included?

Answer
DVD has been around long enough that most of the software players available are pretty good. Theatertek has a pretty large group of devoted users in the home theater PC department, as does Power DVD and WinDVD.

Since you ask about a good codec pack, I'm assuming that you're also wanting to use the player to view other file formats like .AVI and .MP4. Power DVD, WinDVD, and Nero Showtime (bundled with the Nero Burning Suite) all come to mind as solid commercial packages. If your price range is more on the free side (these days, whose isn't?), my advice would be to download the Community Codec Pack and install it; this way, you'll be able to watch pretty much anything you want right on Windows Media Player--or on any of the provided media players in that package.

Community Codec Pack: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Linux Fedora DVD player...Someone please save me an extra 4 hours!!?

Eric

Newbie to linux Operating Systems and decided to try Fedora which was superb at compatibility issues that I was getting in Windows- I didn't have to do anything. The only prob I have is playing DVD's now, I understand there is licensing issues with Fedora and the DVD patents in some places but can someone just tell me the easiest way to click on a link download the app and start using a dvd player?

I have tried sooo many and its driving me mad, for over 4 hours :(
Any help would be muchhh appreciated

Thanks

Answer
Install VLC the DVD player and the file libdvdcss. Once installed you should be able to play DVDs, even the ones you rent or buy. Use the software management program in Fedora to do this.

If it is not in the repository list, then type in the web search VLC .rpm and then libdvdcss .rpm . Ferora uses .rpm files and should install these.

How do you hook up a dvd player/VCR combo?

emmie f

I just bought a DVD player/VCR combo. I already have a cable box (with DVR). How can I hook up the new DVD/VCR so that I can record cable shows onto the VCR?

Answer
On the back of the DVR there should be a set of "outputs" red white and yellow. You can run the outputs into the AV input on the DVD/VCR combo player. Then all you will have to do is put the VCR on the AV channel and play what you have DVR'd and hit record.

how do u transfer vcr tapes on to dvd player with a dvd recorder/or vcrdvd combo?

stumesa

i have a dvd recorder that i can transfer vcr tapes to my dvd player, how do i do that?

Answer
All you have to do is VCR outputs (composite/Yellow and audio/red & white jacks) to the corresponding inputs on the recorder. Hit play,VHS...hit record, dvd recorder and you're done. Stop the DVD recorder and put in new blank dics. Repeat as necessary.

Many dvd recorders allow you to make a basic main menu if you want to break up the dvd into accessible parts. Also be aware that you can get more onto a DVD by varying the record mode on your recorder. But, more on a disc means lower quality. You should also make sure you buy the right blank discs for your brand of recorder. Most handle DVD-Rs but a few brands use DVD+Rs. Check your manual. The patch cables for dubbing can be purchased at your local Radio Shack...you'll need "RCA to RCA".

hope that helps!!!

can a hd upconversion dvd player produce a 1080i image on a 720p hd tv?

Stud Guns

i am using a hdmi cable, i also want to know the best device settings for this combination.

Answer
Yes, an up-converting DVD player can be setup to produce 1080i, BUT your 720p HDTV is just going to down-scale to its native resolution of 720p. Why do you want to do this? Setting up your up-converting DVD player to your TV's native resolution of 720p will always produce the best picture quality!

If my dvd player has progressive scan do I need a 720p or 480p TV?

MCisEVIL

If I don't need it should I opt for it anyway? I've narrowed my TV selection down to two TV's about 500$ each. One is not a big brand name but is 720p. One is a Samsung and is 4 inches bigger but not LCD. Both are flat screen and both are widescreen. Both are HDTV's. What should I do? Also the no name is a flat panel and the Samsung is a SlimFit tube and 16" deep.

Answer
First of all, to answer the original question, a progressive scan DVD player runs at 480p (if you're using the progressive scan feature). That's what the "p" in 480p actually stands for. Normal tv's and dvd players scan, or refresh, the image on the screen every other line at the time, meaning that it will change lines 1,3,5,7,9, etc., then go and change lines 2,4,6,8,10, etc. before going back to the odd lines. This is done very fast, so it's not really perceptible. A progressive scan dvd player in our example would change lines 1-10 every time, theoretically giving a clearer, cleaner picture. However, this will not work on a standard tv. It requires either an EDTV (480P) or HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p). The difference between progressive scan and non-progressive scan isn't all that great.

Now, for the tv part of your question, one major clarification is needed. 480p is NOT an HDTV, no matter what the box or the salesperson tells you. To be an HDTV, a tv must be 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The "i" in 1080i is referring to interlaced lines (the even versus odd lines as above). So right there, the capability of the no-name tv is higher. As far as which is better, that is hard to say, without seeing the televisions. If the tv is a flat panel (and not just flat screen), meaning that it is only a couple inches thick, it is either an LCD tv (should have a plastic-type screen) or plasma (glass screen, and if you look closely you can see the red, green, and blue phospors, just like on a tube tv. I would probably be inclined to go with the no-name HDTV flat panel, but you should be aware that you may be sacrificing quality and durability for HDTV capability.

Hope this helps!

What other Dvd apps can i download for my Mac Os X 10.6.8?

Q. So i stupidly deleted my original dvd player app that originally was in my macbook laptop becuase the region changer had been locked, i have tried to download VLC and others but none worked, any good Dvd player apps that i can instlall for free?
VLC successfully downloaded and installed etc, so i put in a disc dropped it in the box where it said drop media in here in the VLC window and it came up with a yellow triangle beside the title of the disc, i tried another disc and it did the same thing, could u help me?

Answer
Why would VLC not work? Works for me!

Oh and check out your nearest Mac User Group!
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/

Oh cause it's the drive that's locked not the player!

Well like I said it's the drive that has the region changer and has been locked! So the drive is useless for playing DVD movies!

Maybe the drive can be reset. If not you'll have to get another DVD drive!
How'd it get changed 5 times to get to that point?

Am I missing something? I swear there was nothing about ripping. Wants a DVD player!

Like I said it's not the software it's the hardware. Once the limit on the region is done then the drive is locked!

New drive or some way to reset it!

Please help - DVD Creator 4 Mac OS X??...?

Mr X

I'm Not too sure what exactly it is that i need, but i need to burn three movie files to a disk, that can play in a dvd player, or on other laptops.

I would like a menu if possible, where i can pick the which of the 3 videos i want to watch...

Free software is preferable - PLEASE HELP ME!!

Thanks - X

Answer
If your talking about an Apple computer that has an original DVD burner inside, read on. If now, resubmit your question and explain what type of PC you have, and what type of burner. All Apple computers that came with a DVD burner from Apple also have all the software you need to combine movie clips from a camcorder, create chapters, create a menu, and burn the DVD.

Did these movie files come from your camcorder? If you got them from some other source related to Windows, they may be in AVI format, which means you need to download and install Perian to enable your Mac software to play AVI files. After that, open iMovie, import the clips, combine them, add chapter markers, and click the "Create iDVD project" button. That will launch iDVD to finish making the menu, and to burn the project to a blank disc.

What is the Best Dual Screen Car DVD portable player out?

Catharine

I am going on a very long trip and need a DVD player for the drive. I need it to have 2 screens: the base one to have up next to me to change out the movies and the other to hang off the back of the headrest. I will have to put both of them on the headrests on the return trip, though. I would like the base one to swivel flat against itself and not have to lay open to have little feet kick it. Any ideas would be great!

Answer
When you've got two kids screaming and kicking in the back seat of the car trying to share a single portable DVD player, you might as well not have one at all. Enter Axion's new AXN-6079 dual 7-inch screen portable DVD player, capable of accepting a video-in for in-car gameplay, or good for just splitting the screen two ways for your little brats darlings who haven't yet learned to play nice and share. We're pretty sure, however, these things aren't wireless, so if you're cable-phobic, be forewarned before plunking down your $230 when they're available at some point this month.

how to connect a ps2 to a portable dvd player?

Faraaz :D

i have a portable dvd player and a ps2 but when i try to connect it ..it wont work i has a 1 video output and 2 audio autputs (female) and it wont work ......any idea on how i can make it work...im not old....its just the only console i don t use a wanted to see if there anyway this problem can be fixed

Answer
You don't. Most portable DVD players only have OUTPUTs - meaning they send a signal FROM the DVD player TO a TV. You need a DVD player with INPUTs and I've never seen one like this. (yes, I've often wanted to do something similar with my portable DVD player too.)

What you can do instead, is just buy a small 7"-10" LCD TV. They're about $100 or so and work just like a normal TV...only mini-sized. Your PS2 (and portable DVD Player) can connect to them just fine.

Help! My portable DVD player won't work!?

Miz J!

I put in a movie last night and the player said "no disc". I tried another disc & the same thing happened. I looked at the instruction manual to troubleshoot the player & that said nothing. I've had the DVD player for just about a month & it's a good brand name too. Help me out here people!
For some reason the DVD player is not reading the disc & I have moved the "eye" back & forth to help it along to no avail.

Answer
Check the disc you're using for scratches and dirt. If the disc is damaged it won't play properly, regardless of the DVD player's ability to function. You can use a DVD repair device like the "Disc Doctor" to repair the DVD or purchase a new DVD.
#
2
Make sure the discs you're using fit the correct format specified by your DVD player. For example, if your DVD player doesn't support home-burned DVD-R's, then you can't use a DVD that you made at home. You may need to upgrade to a newer model, most of which accept the latest DVD formats.
#
3

Clean the laser lens with a DVD laser lens cleaning disc. DVD laser lens cleaning discs can be purchased at most electronics retailers or online. Insert the laser lens cleaning disc and follow the instructions.
#
4

Insert a correctly-formatted, undamaged disc into your player. Listen to see if it begins to read the disc. If it continues to make no sound and gives you the same message, then the problem is probably that your disc is not spinning in the device.
#
5

Turn the device off and unplug it. Take off the outer casing by removing the three or four screws and lifting the top piece off. This will allow you to see if anything is simply stuck or jammed. If this is the case, a simple nudge back to the correct position will fix the problem.
#
6

Clean the lens while the DVD player is open. A dirty lens is most likely the cause of your no-disc error. The lens should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
#
7

Take your DVD player to have it professionally fixed only when none of these other solutions solves the problem. A professional repair technician will be able to tell you if fixing your DVD player is worth the money.

if any of these don't work, then i can not help you

Tips & Warnings

*
If you open the DVD player and find you don't know anything about what you see, it might be best to have a professional take a look at it instead.
*
Always keep the DVD player unplugged when you open it up.
*
If a DVD player's spindle or laser lens are damaged, it's usually cheaper to purchase a new DVD player.

Are exFAT external hard drives compatible with FAT32 DVD players?

richhand

Most hard drives being sold here in NZ seem to be exFAT and yet most DVD players are still FAT32. Am I correct in assuming that these 2 formats will not be compatible? The sales reps in the shops haven't a clue to what they are selling.
By stating FAT32 dvd players, I am obviously meaning that the dvd player will read FAT32 format.

Answer
Your question makes no sense.

DVD players are not FAT32. FAT32 is a file system used by hard drives. DVDs use a totally different file system.

what video formats play on a regular TV dvd player?

NYCPulpWri

I want to burn a DVD for my mother, a picture slideshow set to music, but I don't what is the correct format which plays on a regular DVD player. Would WMV play on it? If not, what format?

Please answer soon, I got 6 days till Christmas.

Answer
A regular DVD player plays files of the format .VOB.

A DVD you would buy in a shop would have files organised into two folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.

The AUDIO_TS folder is used for DVD Audio and used to contain the audio files for an movie on the disc. This is not really used any more with todays formats, but DVD's are still packed this way for clarity.

The VIDEO_TS folder contains files of the format .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP

VOB (Video Object): A VOB contains several streams multiplexed together: Video, Audio and Subtitles. It is essentially equivalent to MPEG format on a computer, but some players have difficulty playing the entire MPEG format and will skip and jump. Better to convert to .vob format.

IFO: IFO Files give the player important navigational information, like where a chapter starts, where a certain audio or subtitle stream is located, etc.
This is the reason why it's only possible to rip certain parts of a movie (like a chapter) with a ripper which can read this files.

BUP: These files are just backup files of the IFO files. As their counterparts they are not encrypted.

To create a DVD to be read on a player, you need DVD creation software to convert your .WMV, .AVI and other files you would normally play on a computer to these more accessible formats.

A good version of a DVD creator will probably cost you a few pennies, but it is worth it in the long run as you will use it often to create home movies directly with.

If you are making a movie from scratch, get a DVD creating software.

If you are converting files, get a YourformatToDVD (e.g. aviToDvd) converter.

Hooking up DVD player to LG HDTV?

10S Player

I have hooked the DVD player up to the TV, but I can't get a picture, just snow. Do I have to turn off the DVR (I have DIrecTV), and if I do that, how do I get the DVD player to work using my TV Remote (not the DirecTV/DVR remote)?

Answer
DVD Player should have:

S-Video (round with 4-5 pins)
Component Video (three colors red, blue, green)
Composite Video (yellow)
HDMI (one slot)

Now the DVD Player has nothing to do with directV tuner. So you should have some video ports on the rear. Match the port to what you have on the rear of the DVD Player to your HDTV.

DVD Player should have it's own remote, but if you want to use LG remote it has to be universal and it has to be able to be programed or have learning features. If it doesn't then you need to go and buy a universal remote control, that supports your LG, DVD Player and DirectTV Tuner with DVR.

Note sometimes you can't get one that supports everything then you need one that can be programmed or have learning features.

DVD players ???

Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Thanks

Answer
Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD.

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.
