what is a good DVD player that streams Netflix?

best dvd player for streaming netflix on Best Thrillers On Netflix Instant Queue

Mike

i don't care about Blu-ray or HD-DVD's, just want a regular DVD player that streams Netflix. would be good if it played VHS too, but doubt they make those anymore. user friendly, price range $150 tops
can you play regular DVDs on a Blu-ray player?

Answer
DVD player that streams Netflix? - XBOX 360
You can also stream netflix on a Wii or ps3.

You're not gonna find just a plain dvd player that does Netflix. You're going to need a Blu-ray player.

DVD discs can not have internet features. Blu-ray discs can

A lot of Blu-ray discs have an online feature called BD-Live (Blu-ray Disc Live), so most blu-ray players go online for BD-Live, so a lot of blu-ray players will include other internet features like you tube and Netflix

That vizio someone else mentioned is a Blu-ray player. Vizio doesn't even make regular dvd players

UPDATE because of your "additional details": Update - yes, Blu-ray players play DVDs and CDs. DVD players do not play Blu-ray Discs

Can I connect a Roku to my old TV through my old DVD player?

Touscents

This is mainly for Netflix streaming. I am not tech-savie. The TV is not in the same room as the computer, but I am thinking my wireless router means that I do not have to physically connect the Roku to the router. Would a Blue Ray DVD player that can stream Netflix be a better choice for me than a Roku?

Answer
The roku box does a lot more than you think so check them out before you buy. http://www.roku.com
A blu ray that connects to the internet will give you Netflix and maybe 3 other apps. Look at what you get before you buy. Each brand gives you some different apps. However, you will be able to play your old dvds in the blu ray and have a better picture.
One thing of caution, in order to go wireless, some blu rays require a wireless lan adapter that can add $70 to the cost. Sony has a built in antenna.
Also, your speed is crucial to getting good results with Netflix. The higher the better but it has to be above 2 mbps. The further your modem is away from the blu ray the more your wireless signal can drop and it's subject to interference from cell phones, cordless phones and any wireless device.

Is having a tv in a childs bedroom a bad idea?

best personal dvd players for kids on Best Kids Portable DVD Player | Best Kids Stuff
best personal dvd players for kids image

AuroraBore

I have a one and two year old. And i grew up never having a tv in my bedroom.

Although I hated it when i was younger, I can appriciate why my parents did it.

Many parents today let their kids have tvs, dvd players, etc. in their bedrooms, but is this really wise?

Answer
I have trouble understanding why anyone would want their child to have a tv in their bedroom. It pulls the family apart, with each person doing something by themselves in their own personal space. wouldn't you rather have the family doing something together? It makes it hard to monitor what and when the child is watching. It makes it much more likely the kid is going to watch tv just before falling asleep (which can cause insomnia). It makes it far less likely that you're standing nearby when something that's against your values comes up on the tv, so that you can either change the channel or start having a discussion with your child. similarly, it makes it difficult to keep a conversation going about the advertisements your child sees. it keeps the tv front and center in a place where the child often is, making it more likely they will watch tv regularly.

personally, i think one tv per family is plenty (and there are 6 people in my family). there is absolutely no reason why two family members need to be watching two tv shows simultaneously. surely there's something better to do?

Korean Airlines -- What is the correct power adapter type?

Gentlehear

I'm going on Korean Airlines soon and have tried calling their customer service but the representative had no idea as to what type of power adapter can be used to power a personal laptop, dvd player, etc. in the power outlet at many of the seats.

I would like to know if anyone has used a power adapter on Korean Airlines and if they remember what type of adapter they used.

I know this is a real specific question, but perhaps someone out there has an answer! Thanks!
Well if I was hooking up an electronic kidney dialysis machine, I would cease to exist if I couldn't. Yes, I am bringing a book but I have a seven year old and Korean Airlines doesn't have any children's programming on board and this is a thirteen hour flight.
Good grief! Everyone thinks I'm bringing a laptop! No, I am not. Certainly not for a seven year old! I was planning on her using a portable dvd player since the movies in flight on Korean Airlines are not kid's movies. Believe it or not, she will have coloring books too! Yes, I will be playing with her at times too. I'm giving up on this question as the two responders basically were being judgmental and opinionated rather than helpful.

Answer
Instead of bringing a laptop for your child, bring a few toys and a coloring book for him/her. There is no law stating you MUST occupy a child with internet games.

If your child does not like coloring or playing with toys, you should play WITH him/her. Kids always love it when parents play with them and you'd like it too! Eventually your son or daughter will fall asleep from excitement and then you can read.

Also, they usually have movies playing on flights. Just buy (some airlines have them free) some headphones and have your child watch the movie.

But be prepared in case the movie isn't appropriate for your child.

Can I make a DVD from my SD card that will play in any DVD player using Roxio Creator 2011?

Q. I shoot some video at Christmas time of my granddaughter using my D5000. I've been told that if I burn it to a DVD, that the DVD will only play in the computer it was created on? I've also been told that I can't ever edit the video once it's on the DVD. Any advice on this would be appreciated!
Edit: I know, shot not shoot!

Answer
If you wanna make a DVD that will work on a standard DVD player, you will need a DVD burning tool to do this. Just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

The best and most reliable DVD burning tool that I've ever used is a tool called DVD Creator. It's able to burn all kinds of videos to DVD disc. After that, you can view the DVD on DVD player. It also lets you edit videos and create DVD menus. Easy to use and professional.

You should really give it a try. You may check out at:

Best of luck.

That is, the screen should be able to turn 180 and then fold down to become like a tablet, but without the touch. Because you can just as well attach a USB mouse and read books or watch movies or navigate.

That sounds useless! That would be a waist of money! Why not just get portable DVD player if that's all want to do!

EMP device instructions please?

iv'e got many electronic devices at home that i don't use anymore or are broken (a ps3, a dvd player, some controllers(tv/ps3), cellphones, camera's and microwaves or magnetron's). the idea is to make an EMP device for a project for school.

NOTE: this info will be used for further study of electronics and not for private use!

it doesn't have to be the biggest EMP device of all it just has to work! also it will be made just demonstrate to the audience what an EMP can do, as a target we'll be using a cellphone or calculator. therefore it means that the range doesn't need to be that big as well, i would like my spectators to come closer and see whitout having their phones jammed. if the info could be send via video or picture than that'd be great! and if it can be used again, than that would be a BONUS!
thank you for, reading i expect positive results.

Answer
Two basic problems with your approach:

1) you can't generate something that would classify as an EMP in this way. For an EMP, you'll need a very (_VERY_) fast change in an electromagnetic field. There is one method proven to work, which is a nuclear bomb. The other published, possibly only theoretical, method is the controlled explosive compression of a current carrying coil.

2) be glad that you can't. You won't be able to limit the range of your EMP - if you can be sure to destroy a phone at 1 foot, you can't be sure that it won't at least damage all (or at least some) other phones at 10 feet.

I want to get a DVD player that will play high Definition dvds, and will let me watch instant online movies from netflix

Any ideas?

10 points to the best!

Answer
For HD you need a Blu-ray player, not a DVD player. That said, one of the most reasonable is the Insignia player sold at Best Buy (it's their house brand). Netflix and Best Buy just announced a partnership (See link). In Canada the basic player sells for $170 (2nd link).

I suggest anyone replacing a DVD player these days consider a Blu-ray player. Why? Because, that way you have the capability to play Blu-ray disks if/when you find them at an acceptable price, and in the meantime Blu-ray players make a good upscaling DVD player for your existing collection.

Does anyone know of any region free dvd players at bestbuy?

I'm looking to buy a region free DVD player to watch obscure foreign films for films that can't be found off Netflix etc. Can anyone recommend a current region free model from Best Buy that is currently being sold? Thanks!

In the US, it is considered illegal to sell region free DVD players.

My friend just bought a playstation 3 and new huge hdtv. I have seen blue ray players in the upwards of $2, 000. Why would I spend that kind of money when I can simply buy a ps3? I want to know the difference between ps3 blue ray players and the super expensive ones. To me it sound the same as dvd players, and for the most part it is hard to find one that is better than the other. What do you think?

Answer
Well...you can buy a Blu-Ray player for $299-$399 range...NOT over $2,000. With that in mind a PS3 is running around $399 with 80GB. So it is very close in price. It is just a matter of personal preference. Are you a gamer? Are you a young professional? Are you married? Do you want a PS3 in your living room entertainment center? These are some of the reasons for choosing a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player. If you are just watching movies then you should go with the Blu-Ray.

What is the best deal for a HD DVD player?

We have been using our playstation 2 to play dvds on for some time now and would like to get a dvd player. We thought since we are buying one we might as well buy one that is for HD dvds as well as that seems to be the way things are going, can anyone help with finding a good deal? They seem quite expensive!! Thank you :)

Answer
I wouldn't get an HD DVD player. I'd get a Blu-Ray player or wait for a hybrid that plays both. HD DVD players are becoming less common and appear to be going down the path as Beta.

How much are you looking to spend?

I play Blu-Ray's on my PS3.

My new laptop is doing this thing to any videos, like youtube or megavideo, that makes them all green, pixelly, and just plain hard to watch. It doesn't change any other movies I have, like on my hard drive or in the dvd player, just streaming videos. Any tips to fix it?

Answer
Kindly follow the steps and see if it solves your problem :
===============================================
1.Browser Issues :
Update your Browser - whether you are using Internet Explorer, Firefox,.Chrome or any browser just go to their website and download the latest versions.First uninstall the older version and then install the newest versions.
===============================================
2.Website Issues
Many of the popular video streaming websites, including YouTube, use Adobe Flash Player. Confirm that your computer is using the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. To do this, go to the Adobe website and download the appropriate uninstaller for your computer. Once the current installation has been uninstalled, go back to the Adobe website and install the most recent version of the plugin.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
===============================================
3.Firewall Issues
Firewalls may block streaming video ports. If you are having problems watching streaming videos via a desktop application such as Windows Media Player, and you normally have to use an proxy server to gain Web access, you may have to enable your media player to also use the proxy server. This option can be found in the Options or Preferences menu of your particular media player.
===============================================
4.Internet Connection
The speed and stability of an Internet connection has a direct effect on the quality of streaming video. A slow connection will result in choppy video and audio, while an unstable Internet connection can result in video stopping suddenly. Try to view streaming video using only a fast connection such as broadband cable or DSL. If you are using a wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) connection, make sure you have a strong signal. Check your internet speed at - www.speedtest.net
========================================================================
5.Software Issues
Running out-of-date software can result in problems watching streaming video. Other common issues include buffering problems or acceleration problems. Consult your application's help file to learn how to update your media viewer to the latest version, and to learn how to adjust the buffer or video acceleration.
===============================================
6.Hardware Issues
The quality of your streaming video is dependent on the power of your graphics and sound cards. Older computers may not have robust enough video or sound cards to handle modern streaming video. If you have an older machine, try updating the drivers for your video and sound cards to ensure the best quality.
===============================================
7.Ad Blockers/Pop up blockers
Ad blockers, especially pop-up ad blockers, are public enemy number one. Turn them off and the videos may stream.
If you are using Chrome browser check if you have flash blocked extention installed.
===============================================
8.Antivirus Issues
Although less of a problem than ad blockers and firewalls, some overly protective anti-virus programs obstruct streaming video. If none of the earlier suggestions have worked for you, turn off your anti-virus programs and the videos might stream. This is perfectly safe.
========================================================================
9.TRY ALTERNATE PLAYER - Try alternate player to youtube - Flow Player (www.flowplayer.org)
it is very streamlined,fast and much better than the official youtube player. To watch Youtube through flow player click here to open up the youtube page and any video you click on will open with flow player - http://4.hidemyass.com/ip-1/encoded/Oi8vd3d3LnlvdXR1YmUuY29t&f=norefer.
===============================================
10.If Nothing works at all try downloading the Youtube videos to your computer from http://keepvid.com/ or download the software (which works with 900 video sites) from www.videoget.com.
===============================================
Hope this helps - Have a great day!

How come i cant play a video on my dvd player?

jess997

I have 4 glee episodes in MPEG4 format on my flashdrive and when i plug the flashdrive into the dvd player it doesent work. Does anyone know how to make it work or convert it to the windows media player format fast?

Answer
First of all you should read your DVD manual and I bet it will tell you it can only display .jpg pictures and perhaps standard def .AVI files. Thats it.

A DVD player is a standard def device. Why would they add software/circuits to it to let you play MP4 videos in HD? It is not a computer.

Look - your computer has 10-20 small pieces of software called "codex's". These software pieces plug in to handle .wmv, .mp3, .mp4, .rm, .mpg, .mkv, .avi, .flv, .. etc. About once per year you usually need to update these pieces of software.

But a DVD player is NOT a computer. It does not have a way to insert all these codex's or even let you upgrade things.

What you really need is a device called a "Media Server". It's a small box with a USB jack on one side and a HDMI jack on the other. Some of these run about $99, and other more expensive units have hard drives, network connections (to stream from your computer) and even wireless connections.

I have tried to burn things to DVD's before and it takes HOURS and sometimes there are issues with the sound being out of sync with the video, etc. A media server is a easier way to go.

Can you recommend a good video player to replace Windows media player?

Needs to be free, and as good as Media player. Media Player is not playing all of my downloaded files, Iâm running XP and this is for downloaded files, not DVDâs movies.

Answer
I've tried tons of alternatives including all of the ones mentioned here (in the comments area) and i find these are the best, in order of importance, and the reasons why:

1. Gom Player

Why?: It seems these guys decided to look and steal the best of what makes the other players good and incorporate it into a very smart, clean interface. It can play some partial files but can't play some things like Vobs, and Bin files

Download: http://www.gomplayer.com/download.html

2. Vlc Player

Why?: This is the granddaddy that can play ANY video file out there. It's user interface is GAWD-AWFUL (quite possibly the most annoying and developer abused tool when it comes to user interface ever). It is solely because it can play ANY movie file including ANY partially downloaded video file that makes it a very important part of video players. Besides that i have only bad things to say about this program.

Download: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

3. Media Player Classic

Why?: This one was put together by a hacker team who was fed up with Microsoft and their half-arsed work on Windows Media Player and took the v6.0 Media Player and spruced it up BIG TIME. It has a lot of features and can play some partial files well,

Download: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm

For me i use ALL 3 of these ones together since each can do something the other cant. But Gom is the closest to being perfect. For you i recommend you get Gom Player and depending if you are a big p2p downloader i would also recommend u get Vlc Player too (to play partial movie downloads -- this program is incredible at that).

I also recommend you download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack..this will give you all the video codecs that you need to play ANY movies/videos that you come across without concern for cases like video runs but no audio, or vise-versa...

K-Lite Codec Pack Download Page: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

How do I play photographs on a DVD player?

G-Mo 16

If I burn jpeg (or other image file types) onto a blank DVD disc, will it play on a regular DVD player? If not, how can I do this?

Answer
You can use software to create slideshow DVD's.

Nero PhotoShow is one of the best slideshow software available. You can download a free trial.
http://www.usnero.photoshow.com/

Ulead cd and dvd picture show 4 is also highly recommended.
http://www.ulead.com/dps/runme.htm

Roxio's PhotoSuite would be another alternative, however Roxio does not match Nero's popularity.
http://www.roxio.com/enu/store/photo.html

Windows PhotoStory 3 is a free alternative if you have XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

Windows Movie Maker is another free choice, which is not all that bad, although there are many more features in the above choices.

james

The quality of the picture is pretty important to me.

Also, I've heard that most lcd tvs can convert a 420p signal to a 720p.
Is this the same thing as buying a 720p dvd player?

Answer
By 720p dvd player I guess you are talking about a blu ray. A blu ray will look much better than a standard dvd disk. HD tvs do convert any signal they receive to their native resolution, but if you send your tv a 480 dvd pic, it will just convert a poor signal to a large screen. A blu ray will send you a full 720 lines of resolution and look much clearer. It can send a 1080p signal, but with a 720p tv, that's all you will see, 720p. Still an excellent pic.

Use HDMI or red/green/blue component cables to connect blu ray to your tv.

Where can I purchase an inexpensive DVD player with only a couple of special features?

Swim

I am looking to buy a DVD player only (not blu-ray or DVD VCR combo).
But I have an older TV that is not HD.
I am seeing technical terms like progressive scan, upscaling, and upconverting in my search for the DVD player I would like.

I am convinced that progressive scan is the way to go.
But upscaling and upconverting are words that seem to be used interchangeably. When I try to define those words, I find that upscaling seems to refer to being able to connect the DVD player to my older TV and having the DVD player refine and upgrade the image on the tv screen.

Upconverting seems to refer to being able to do the same thing, but with an HDMI connection from DVD and tv set.
I don't have HDMI on my tv so upscaling would probably work for me.

But what I am looking for is a DVD player that features upscaling, upconverting, and progressive scan. So far, I can't find any such DVD players that feature all three.

Does anyone know more about this and/or where I can find such a DVD player? I would like all three so that when I get a HD tv set with HDMI, my DVD player will work for it using the HDMI connection rather than what it would have to use with my current tv set.

Thanks and I hope someone can help me understand more about this.

Answer
Upscaling/upconverting and progressive scan are all only useful on HDTVs. A player that has these features will still work fine on an older non-HD set, since the player only uses these features on the outputs for HD (HDMI and component). Non-HD sets don't use HDMI and component, instead they use S-video or composite (yellow).

What this means is that you don't need to go crazy looking for a player without these features, because they aren't used when the player is connected to an older standard-def TV. And if you *do* buy a player with these features, if you ever get a new TV, you can take advantage of them, instead of having to also get a new fancier DVD player.

Here's more background on what the features do:

Upscaling and upconverting are the same thing. They take the lower-res DVD image and stretch it to have the same resolution as HD. This can make the DVD picture look a little better on an HDTV, but it still won't look great, because missing detail that never got onto the DVD to begin with, can't be recreated. And on a standard-def (non-HD) TV, upscaling/upconverting aren't useful at all, because the original resolution of a DVD is already standard-def.

Progressive scan means that all the lines in the picture out output in order from top to bottom, which is how HDTV signals are usually formatted. On the other hand, older standard-def used what was called interlaced scan, where first all the odd-numbered lines were output top to bottom, followed by all the even-numbered lines. This enabled the image to appear to be updated twice as fast, but the side effect was a slightly noticeable vertical jitter, which you can still see on some standard-def TVs. Progressive scan conversion on a DVD player takes the original interlaced scan signal and converts it to progressive scan, which can result in smoother movement when viewed on an HDTV. But since standard-def TVs can't use progressive scan at all, it's not of any benefit for them.
