Resetting region settings for mac dvd player?

Shabnoor S

Alright so the mac OS X dvd player only lets you change your region settings five times. I have used up those five times and i can't find a way around it, though i know there must be one.

I would really appreciate it if someone knew how to reset the dvd player.

Answer
Every DVD player (that includes the one in your computer) is sold being able to play only discs with the same region as the country it was sold in,that includes Macs too.On a new Mac, the DVD drive is automatically locked to the region code of the first DVD it is used with. From then on, this can only be changed four more times. Here you can find more information about how to play different region DVD on your mac:

Hope it helps!

Can a Phillips portable DVD player connect to mac?

Karan

I have got lots films on discs I wanted to know if I can connect my DVD player to my computer(mac) and be able to record them so that I can keep them on my Hardrive
By CDs I mean old memories

Answer
If you mean the kind of thing that looks a bit like a laptop which you put a DVD into and then watch it on its screen, no, that won't connect to your Mac.

What you need is a DVD drive - are you sure your Mac doesn't already have a slot where you can insert a CD/DVD? If it does, great - if not you can buy an external drive you can plug into USB, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Writer-External-Optical-Drive/dp/B003M0NT1M/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365693911&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+dvd+drive

Once you have the DVD in the computer or in a drive connected to the computer, you can copy it to your hard drive. If it's a data CD or DVD just copy the files to your hard drive - but if it's an audio CD, use iTunes to "rip" the music into files on your hard drive, or if it's a DVD with movies/videos, use the instructions here: http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/video-how-to/how-to-rip-dvds-into-itunes/

When will everyone start using BLU-RAY?

Basic

Hello, how long will it take before everyone starts using BLU-RAY? Dvd's are still popular. I have a BLU-RAY player my Playstation 3 that is. When will BLU-RAY take over Dvd's like Dvd's did to vhs? I'm guessing by 2012? Whats your guys take?

Answer
Well blu ray has many advantages. The problem is that the players and the discs themselves are just too expensive. When you can get a dvd for 15 bucks that has good enough quality for most people there is no reason to spring 30 bucks to get a blu ray of the same film. Im in the camp that says its worth it. The sound quality is fantastic on blu ray. but then again im an audiophile.

I like the movie, I've got both a DVD player and a blu ray player. Depending on the picture quality I can't decide which version to get. For those who have the blu ray copy is the colours much brighter? Or should I save my £ and just get the DVD?

You could buy the Blu Ray DVD combo.

If my dvd player has progressive scan do I need a 720p or 480p TV?

MCisEVIL

If I don't need it should I opt for it anyway? I've narrowed my TV selection down to two TV's about 500$ each. One is not a big brand name but is 720p. One is a Samsung and is 4 inches bigger but not LCD. Both are flat screen and both are widescreen. Both are HDTV's. What should I do? Also the no name is a flat panel and the Samsung is a SlimFit tube and 16" deep.

Answer
First of all, to answer the original question, a progressive scan DVD player runs at 480p (if you're using the progressive scan feature). That's what the "p" in 480p actually stands for. Normal tv's and dvd players scan, or refresh, the image on the screen every other line at the time, meaning that it will change lines 1,3,5,7,9, etc., then go and change lines 2,4,6,8,10, etc. before going back to the odd lines. This is done very fast, so it's not really perceptible. A progressive scan dvd player in our example would change lines 1-10 every time, theoretically giving a clearer, cleaner picture. However, this will not work on a standard tv. It requires either an EDTV (480P) or HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p). The difference between progressive scan and non-progressive scan isn't all that great.

Now, for the tv part of your question, one major clarification is needed. 480p is NOT an HDTV, no matter what the box or the salesperson tells you. To be an HDTV, a tv must be 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The "i" in 1080i is referring to interlaced lines (the even versus odd lines as above). So right there, the capability of the no-name tv is higher. As far as which is better, that is hard to say, without seeing the televisions. If the tv is a flat panel (and not just flat screen), meaning that it is only a couple inches thick, it is either an LCD tv (should have a plastic-type screen) or plasma (glass screen, and if you look closely you can see the red, green, and blue phospors, just like on a tube tv. I would probably be inclined to go with the no-name HDTV flat panel, but you should be aware that you may be sacrificing quality and durability for HDTV capability.

Hope this helps!

I have a 720p tv, thinking about buying a dvd upconverter, will a 1080 dvd player correctly upconvert to 720?

keyshawn_2

Answer
A dvd player that upconverts to 1080p will work on your tv that is only 720p because the dvd player should do every resolution up until 1080p so it should do 480p/720p/1080i and 1080p

You should have no issues.

DVD upconverting player?

David B

I just installed my first HDTV, which is an LG 42LH30. Will an "upconverting" DVD player cause my standard DVDs to look better? Or does the television's native video engine do all that already?

I'll do the Blue Ray thing later, but I was wondering about my collection of standard DVD's.

Answer
Your tv does upconvert the dvd signal. If you are using component (red/green/blue) cables from your dvd player to your tv, you should be getting quality equal to a normal upconverting dvd player. Before blu ray, some upconverting dvd players were around which did a slightly better upconverting job than most tvs. But they were very expensive and now anyone wanting a real good pic goes with Blu Ray.

So wait to get a blu ray if your current dvd player has component connections.

do any upconverting dvd players upconvert any video?

Colton Kel

im playing to get a 1080p hd tv and i was wandering if they also upconvert video games like the n64. and i hgave a surround sound system wiht hdmi ports.

Answer
DVD players do NOT have inputs. They will not take your videos and up-convert them unless you burn the video into a standard def DVD.

All HDTV's will up-convert (or down-convert) the 3 resolutions to match it's internal format.

This means if you feed it 480i from an old game system - the TV will up-convert (really "Magnify") the image to 1080.

is there such thing as a dvd/vcr combo player WITH wifi?

Becca

and if so could you please tell me where i could buy one?

Answer
No. Such items are made to be cheap, so won't have beyond regular DVD playing, let alone WiFi.

What is the benefit of having a wifi blueray dvd player?

Wayne

As I begin the process of buying a Blueray player, I'm confused over those that have wifi. I guess I don't know why a player needs an internet connection. Could someone fill me in on this?

Answer
1. the biggest reason why it would need an internet connection is if you bought it in hopes of streaming netflix/youtube/pandora radio etc. most people want a wireless connection because they do not want to deal with wires and running them etc, i would still recommend going wired especially if you are watching hd video since a wireless connection usually wont have the speeds necessary for hd video.

2. you can download apps to your smartphone ipod touch etc, so that you can use them as a remote, or to pass files from one source to another, example would be, if you wanted to look at the pictures in your phone on your tv you can do that through your bluray player.

3. this was the original reason why bluray players wanted/needed an internet connection, firmware updates, with bluray discs the way they are manufactured changes, they constantly improve the way its done to give you better performance, and with that you need to update the firmware so that it can continue to read all the new bluray movies out there. it just makes it easier being able to download the firmware directly to the machine vs having to download it to your pc and then burning it to a disc etc.

wifi isnt that necessary. but if you ever plan on going wifi then i would advise buying it with it built in versus buying the adaptor which costs more than the 2 combined. and usually 30-40 more. plus most retail stores have deals from the manufacture that will give away a free adaptor.

I have a sansui dvd/vhs player/recorder and the remote wont work, Can I buy a universal remote to make it work?

Olivia

This sansui dvd/vhs player/ recorder is over 10 yrs old but I mainly use it to play dvds but all of a sudden the remote has been acting weird. I put new batteries in and it started to work fine but now it wont even work. The player works fine but the remote doesn't. Can I buy a universal remote to make it work?

Answer
You can, but you will likely lose some functions. I have a Phillips universal remote that was much easier to set up than others that I've used. I can't find a model number or part number on it. It was $14.95 at CVS. It automatically searches for the appropriate codes.

How can I transfer a video cassette onto a DVD with my DVD/VHS player?

Chelly

I have this old video tape and I want to transfer it to a DVD using my DVD/VHS player WITHOUT any expensive devices/software. If it isn't possible, then give me any other info you have on easy ways to do this.

Answer
If it's something you recorded off a television broadcast, or a home video you taped with your camcorder or whatever, then get yourself a DVD-Recorder...you can pick a cheap one up for around 80 bucks at Target/ShopKo/Best Buy...whatever.

I do recommend you spring for a more expensive model (one that's over 120 bucks, as it will be a higher quality unit, but that's just my opinion)

Take the VCR and hook it into the DVD Recorder as an input. Instructions provided in the manual will tell you how to operate the unit, but it's almost always very simple to do.

You'll need blank media (DVD-R or DVD+R, usually) but you can find those at almost any electronics store as well - just ask the clerk to direct you to them.

HOWEVER, If this old tape is a commercial production - a real film - then it may employ an anti-copying protection known as Macrovision. This was a 1980s technology that, when you attempted to copy the tape, it would distort the picture...make it of significantly lower quality.

This is why when, back in the day, you'd rent a tape from the video store, and when you'd try and (illegally ;-) ) copy it, it would never be nearly as good as the original.

Many modern DVD Recorders, when they recognize the presence of Macrovision on a tape, will simply *refuse* to copy it at all.

EDIT: I also noticed at Costco, just the other day, a DVD Recorder/VHS Player that had *one touch* operation in this manner - like, a 'Copy to DVD' button, right on the front. I didn't get to try it out, but I'm guessing since it was a Sony deck, it would be simple to operate and of pretty high quality.

How do you transfer a video from your camcorder to a DVD?

Joe.R

I have tried repeatedly to transfer videos taken with my Canon G10 digital camera, upload them to my computer, and burn them to a DVD-R disk.
I have found this nearly impossible to do correctly.

First of all, when I attach a USB cable and transfer the video files to my computer, it turns them into MVI files. When I click on these files, a message pops up that says Windows Media Player cannot play these files.
Why a mainstream camera--made not too long ago--creates files that WMP cannot play is one of the great mysteries of the world. You would think that I'm asking my computer to play an obscure format from the 1970's.

Anyway, when I insert a blank DVD-R disk into my desktop's drive, it asks me what I want to do. I select that I want to burn files to a CD/DVD and want to view them on a DVD player. I then click and drag 2 of the video files that WMP had claimed it could not play.
After it finishes burning the files to DVD, I test it to see if it works. I discover that only 1 of the 2 files were recorded when I play it on my computer. Don't ask me why.

When I try to play this same disk on my Playstation 3, it says that there are "no files". Unbelievable.

I wasted another blank DVD by testing to see what would happen if I selected the other option, which was "use disk like a USB drive", but NOTHING happens when I proceed with this option. It simply refuses to burn ANYTHING. It just ruins the disk by doing some kind of formatting, rendering it useless.

I am really frustrated at this point. Is it too much to ask to simply record video and view it on my DVD player?

FYI: I am using Windows 8.1

Answer
Lots to chew on...

First paragraph: The Canon Vixia HF G10 is a great camcorder that captures AVCHD-compressed high definition video into MTS files. A DVD-R can be a single layer 4.7 gig blank or 8.5 gig blank disk. They are designed to deal with standard definition VOB files - assuming the video is expected to playback on a regular DVD player. You did not tell us what you used to convert the high definition MTS (or M2TS) files to the VOB file format. Something converted them to MVI format - what was that?

Second paragraph: It is published and known that Windows Media Player is not a "universal media player". It does not know what to do with the MVI or MTS files. If you merely need playback, download and install VLC Player from www.videoLAN.org. There are other media players more robust than WMP. This is not a "great mystery", but a known, published, shortcoming of WMP. It is likely that WMP can easily deal with video formats from the 1970's. Since they were standard definition and there were not too many of them, it would be relatively easy to deal with.

Paragraph 3: THAT is a mystery - only one of the two files plays. Fascinating. Though we don't know what file type you burned and we don't know what format video is in the medial file... Try using VLC player.

Paragraph 4: The Playstation 3 has specific file types it can deal with. According to at least one manual
http://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/CECH-2101A_2101B_3.10_1.pdf
Page 43 says "only discs recorded in NTSC standard can be played." This means VOB files for standard definition. Pages 49 and 50 have a little more detail. There is no information on "MVI" files, so that you can play those files on your Playstation 3 is not surprising.

Paragraph 5: That's irritating.

Paragraph 6: Not too much to ask... but making invalid assumptions won't help matters...

Paragraph 7: Thank you for letting us know.

Regroup:
We don't know what options settings you used for your G10. It has several ralted to resolution (1080 i/p; 720p; etc...). Assuming you are using the "default" - whatever that is, here's my suggested process...

Assuming you only want to *view* the video:
Option 1: Connect the camcorder to the HDTC using the component or HDMI connections.
Option 2: Copy the MTS/M2TS files to the computer. Connect the computer's VGA-out to the HDTV's VGA-in. I do this all the time with my Panasonic plasma. Works great.
Option 3: If you insist on wanting to use blank DVDs, you can - since we know the computer will play back the files, I use the VGA connection to the computer.

Assuming you want a DVD player to playback the video: A regular DVD player can't deal with high definition video. Use a DVD authoring application - like WinDVD, MyDVD or similar to downsample the high definition video to standard definition VOB files and burn the single layer or double layer blank disc.

Assuming you want a Blue Ray player (like the one in the PlayStation 3) to playback the video, use a Blue Ray video authoring application to convert that video to something the Blue Ray player can deal with, then burn THAT to the blank DVD... I like using the the tools that come with the Blue Ray disc burners from Lacie
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10058
But then, I don't have the issues you are having - I use Macs.

best 3d dvd player review image

Critter122

on January 11th, i am planning on getting Piranha 3D, but after the terrible 3d quality of My Bloody Valentine 3D, i was considering a blu ray player.
1. if i don't have a 3d tv, can i still get a 3d blu ray player to make the 3d look better than regular dvd?
2. if i just get a regular blu ray player, will the 3d still be a lot better than regular dvd 3d?
3. is blu ray worth it?

Answer
"1. if i don't have a 3d tv, can i still get a 3d blu ray player to make the 3d look better than regular dvd?"

No. A 2D TV is only capable of displaying older, anaglyph 3D, which uses color tinted cardboard glasses and is available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

If you want to see the true stereoscopic 3D effect that some movies on Blu-ray use (called 3D Blu-ray), then you need a 3D TV, 3D Blu-ray player, and electronically shuttered 3D eyeglasses.

You should know that "My Bloody Valentine" was released in two forms of 3D, anaglyph (DVD and Blu-ray) and stereoscopic (3D Blu-ray). The stereoscopic version that was recently released will have a better 3D effect (when viewed on a true 3D system) than the anaglyph version , but was still poorly reviewed when compared to other 3D Blu-ray titles: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Bloody-Valentine-3D-Blu-ray/16128/#Review .

"2. if i just get a regular blu ray player, will the 3d still be a lot better than regular dvd 3d?"

Not really, the picture may look a little sharper, but that's about it.

"3. is blu ray worth it?"

It is if you have an HDTV that is 42" or larger.

What should i buy first? A new 42' LED Vizio 3d tv or a new soundbar such as the sony htct260?

Taylor

I'm tight with money right now and I am going to buy one or the other, I've never had a Soundbar before but neither have I had a 3d TV, what should I get first?!

Answer
First off you will need a tv and then a sound bar. I would not waste my money on a 3D technology that is not supported by software. Keep in mind, to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray disc movie (at this time there are only 180 titles available in 3D and they are mainly animated movies from Disney) and 3D glasses for each person. The price is higher for any 3D product. Vizio is a bargain price tv that is not very good in quality or reliability. Sony is not know for making very good sound system and the quality and reliability have dropped over the years. I never had any Sony product that have lasted over 3 years. The first DVD player model 7000 and 7700 the following year and paid over $1,100 each. The first HDTV by Sony and paid $6,400. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on all products for a home theater. If you read yahoo questions all the time, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD or LED tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

EMP device instructions please?

Ricardo

iv'e got many electronic devices at home that i don't use anymore or are broken (a ps3, a dvd player, some controllers(tv/ps3), cellphones, camera's and microwaves or magnetron's). the idea is to make an EMP device for a project for school.

NOTE: this info will be used for further study of electronics and not for private use!

it doesn't have to be the biggest EMP device of all it just has to work! also it will be made just demonstrate to the audience what an EMP can do, as a target we'll be using a cellphone or calculator. therefore it means that the range doesn't need to be that big as well, i would like my spectators to come closer and see whitout having their phones jammed. if the info could be send via video or picture than that'd be great! and if it can be used again, than that would be a BONUS!
thank you for, reading i expect positive results.

Answer
Two basic problems with your approach:

1) you can't generate something that would classify as an EMP in this way. For an EMP, you'll need a very (_VERY_) fast change in an electromagnetic field. There is one method proven to work, which is a nuclear bomb. The other published, possibly only theoretical, method is the controlled explosive compression of a current carrying coil.

2) be glad that you can't. You won't be able to limit the range of your EMP - if you can be sure to destroy a phone at 1 foot, you can't be sure that it won't at least damage all (or at least some) other phones at 10 feet.

Edit: El Reg just ran a short article about the current state of the art - practically unchanged since 1990....: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/11/the_long_slow_march_to_a_practical_pulse_bomb/

My CD/DVD player stopped working on my computer (I can't even open the drives anymore).

I have a spare, small DVD player that used to be attached to my TV.

Can you attach a DVD player to a computer in order to play movies on your computer? Or do they only work with TVs?

I realize you probably can't burn things, but I thought just for movies. It would be cheaper than having to buy another external piece for the computer.

Thanks!

Answer
You can if your computer has a TV tuner or video capture card (with the necessary audio and video inputs). Otherwise you can't. Internal DVD drives aren't that expensive anymore, so I'd recommend just buying a replacement.

why does me burned dvd only have audio on some dvd players but not others?

Mad Thinke

ok, i used totalvideo2dvd author to convert a video i recorded to a dvd iso file and burned it with imgburn.
when i tested the dvd in my home dvd player (cheap best buy one) it plays fine with video and audio working perfectly. but when i tried to give a presentation at work on the companies new magnavox dvd player i got clear picture but no audio.
why is this and how can i fix it?
I've reburned, i've reconverted and burned both discs had the same issue

I really like T*V*2DVD's interface and would like to stick with it, this issue doesn't happen very often but it's a hajor embarrassment when it does
using philips DVD+r burning at x8 speed
problem seems random, some discs burn with audio some don't but the ones that don't always don't and the ones that do always do i.e. presentation 1, 2 & 4 burn/reburn with audio intact but presentation 3 always reburns/reconverts and burns with no sound

i checked the video files it has audio
checked the work dvd player audio inputs, settings and tested with multiple dvd+r
is it because i used ac3 instead of mp2?

Answer
You should use a different DVD-R. Cheap DVD-Rs have lower compatibility with players, but good DVD-Rs will work on a higher range of players. Choose a professional grade DVD-R, and that will most likely fix your issue. Go to http://www.wtsmedia.com/c-6-blank-dvd-rs.aspx and choose a Falcon Media DVD-R.

I assume you have checked the obvious items like the audio inputs on the company's DVD player.

If you want to burn any movies to DVD, usually free version only have the basic functions and poor services and watermark, i have used the good and inexpesive trial version AVS Disc Creator, you can try it, it can create standard video DVD from any videos, it can burn mulit videos to one disc, it can auto fit the size, it can directly convert and burn any videos to DVD, such as avi to DVD, etc.

Work well on my computer, it is trail version, register version willl remove watermark limit, inexpensive, good service and quality, i like it, following is a step by step guide about Video DVD Creator:
