Bluray Player or DVD Player?

Sam

Hi, I have a question regarding movie players. In your opinion, should I buy a Blu-Ray Player or a DVD Player. I know a Blu-Ray player is much more expensive as well as the movies, however, if I remember correctly I can also play DVD's on a Blu-Ray player and it will upconvert it to 1080i. So my plan is to get regular movies on DVD and play it on the Blu-Ray player and if there's a movie like Avatar or 2012 the movies that just has to be watched in HD I'll get the Blu-Ray Version of the movie.

So Basically what I'm asking is:

1) Will a Blu-Ray player play both DVD and Bluray so I can get movies I like on Blu-Ray and regular movies on DVD?

2) Which is better? To get the Blu-Ray player or DVD player?

Please answer in detail, Thanks in advance! Cheers! :D

Answer
Most (not all) blu-ray players play dvd's too and some (by no means all) will upcovert to 1080i although it is still not as good as watching something that is HD as source.

How do I get the DVD player to play while driving?

Meghan

I just bought a dodge Durango crew 2012 and the kids hate having to wait for me to put the car on park to watch a movie

Answer
its not illegal to remove or modify the dvd disable function. but its illegal for you to be distracted by the player or radio or gps while driving as you could also be ticketed for distracting other drivers if they are able to view the movie through your windows at night...look it up. google stories about morons watching porn who are now registered sex offenders because children in other cars where able to view the screen. more importantly you asking how to disable a feature that is there to help you keep your kids safe while your driving. just because they hate waiting ? long trips are also a good time to talk to your kids too . so i wont be telling how to do it. my kids where allowed to bring books and a small clip on book light.

can regular dvd players read dual layer dvd?

TheGrimmCh

also why do some dvd have a negative, dash and positive signs?

Answer
Yes, all DVD players can play Dual layer.

DVD-R and DVD+R are recording format. Almost all players play both, but recorders usually only support one of them.

Has anyone had trouble with an HD DVD player not playing "dual layer" DVDs?

Mike K

Answer
HD DVD and dual-layer DVD are different things, so there is no guarantee that a HD DVD player will be compatible with dual-layer DVDs. Check the specs on your unit to see if it is compatible with dual-layer DVDs.

Do you have a Portable TV/DVD player in your vehicle?

~CriCkeT~

We have purchased one for our Daughter- As she HATES her carseat and literally screams, cries, pitches a fit and just makes the ride miserable for not only herself, but the me and her dad- it makes it hard to concentrate when were constantly trying to calm her.

So, I find this to be a lifesaver for the car! She is tuned in and loves it. The car ride is much easier for both she, and us! She only watches educational movies (little einstein mainly)

So, do youhave one? Or, better yet, what is the last purchase you made that seemed to be a wise investment?

Answer
Yes, we do have a portable DVD in our car. We bought a set of two. So we have one behind the drivers seat and one behind the passenger seat. My children LOVE it! It works so well, especially for my 21 month old who would scream hysterically whenever he got in the car.. now we put a DVD on for him, and he's as quiet as can be!

ON THE GO DVD PLAYERS FOR TODDLERS?

rican shaw

I HEARD ABOUT VIDEO NOW, BUT IT ONLY PLAYS TV SHOWS. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS ON THE GO FOR TODDLERS! MY SON ALWAYS GETS BORED AND I WOULD LOVE FOR HIM TO BE ENTERTAINED WITH MOVIES!

Answer
Fisher Price makes a Kid-Tough portable DVD player that retails at Walmart for $129.00 which is said to withstand a fairly good beating.

And I know this next part is completely unsolicited and might earn me some displeasure from my fellow posters, however I feel compelled to say it; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your child watches no more than 1-2 hours of quality programming a day. Instead of the DVD player, perhaps purchase some CDs for car rides that you can sing along with or have a small selection of books that are for car rides only. My kids do both and this allows us to interact more in the car and has helped them to learn how to sing their ABC's as well as count to 20 in English, Spanish and German by age 2 1/2. TV in small doses is fine, but we shouldn't rely on it to entertain our children. If they have to be entertained at such a young age by television what will they be like when they are teenagers?

If I burn a Region 2 DVD does it become region-free?

Falafel so

I've searched on Yahoo Answers and every answer seems to be links to guides on how to burn DVDs. I know how to burn a DVD. I simply want to know if it automatically becomes region free when I make a burnt copy or what exactly I have to do to make it region free. I don't want to know all the other steps of burning - just how to get it region free so it would play on my DVD player.
"If you're trying to play a formerly region 2 disc on a region 1 player, it still may not work because Europe (and others) uses the PAL video format while North America (and others) uses the NTSC format. If this is the case, you'll have to either get a player that can handle PAL or completely remake the dvd."

How will I know if it won't work? It definitely is PAL. And how would I "completely remake the dvd"?

Answer
The software used to rip/decrypt the original dvd can remove the region coding as it copies if you turn that feature on (or you can use DVDShrink later as Sniper said). The writing (burning) to a new disc doesn't do anything with it.

If you're trying to play a formerly region 2 disc on a region 1 player, it still may not work because Europe (and others) uses the PAL video format while North America (and others) uses the NTSC format. If this is the case, you'll have to either get a player that can handle PAL or completely remake the dvd.

---Edit (after additional details)---

PAL dvd movies are usually 720x576 pixels at 25 frames/sec while NTSC is 720x480 at (approx.) 30 fps (PAL dvd's are also usually speed up including audio pitch by 4% but that's another matter..). Only some North American players can play PAL (and output NTSC on the fly). From what I've read, it seems Philips players and some LG are good for this. You can find out if it'll work, of course, by putting the disc in the player and seeing if the movie plays :) Or check online if anyone's posted information about your player model. Searching here is a good place to start: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers (sometimes region-free codes will be posted there too if someone knows one). If it's not there, google the make and model number and "play PAL" or similar. The forums at videohelp.com may have some discussions on cheap PAL-playing players too (or make an account and ask). I have an older Sony player that will not play PAL at all (it gives a region code error message which really isn't accurate but anyway..) and a Magnavox dvd recorder that plays PAL but it's choppy.

By remake the dvd, I mean create a new dvd using dvd-authoring software with the movie as input. If the software can do this (and it should if it's the all-in-one type like DVD Flick), it will be re-encoded but with NTSC properties. Hopefully the video quality won't suffer too much in the conversion.

How do i get my onn dvd player on my universal remote?

Candie Bay

So my dvd player remote broke and I tried to put my dvd player to my universal remote but onn is not on the list its a cogeco remote for my cable and my other dvd player is hooked up to my other remote (its a magnivox) but for some reason onn is not on the list, is onn owned by a company that's on the list? The dvd player is a cheap one so I figure it might be with another company.

Answer
According to the answer from the following question in Yahoo,
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080520041054AAd3TC1

I think what you need to do is to find out the code for your universal remote control, good luck

dvd burning?

Amandaa K

hi i use lime wire and download avi and mpg to dvd -rw and some will play on my dvd player on my tv and some will not, why is this? Some of them are too big to and wont fit on disk step by step how to i fix this so i can play them oh tv dvd recorder. Also i decided to use dvr-r instead of rw. My dvd recorder will say invalid disk/ no disk after I burn a something i know works on the disk .HELP IM NOT GOOD AT THIS STUFF BUT NEED TO BE.

Answer
1st- .avi's are usually DivX (a pay for use app-easy to use) or XVid (freeware but difficult to master). These wont play on standard DVD players unless they say DivX Certified. They will have to be converted to a standard MPEG using software like Nero Vision.

2nd-All MPEGS are not DVD compliant.

3rd-To shrink the movies, use DVDShrink. The easiest ripper is 1ClickDVDCopy. It'll rip and shrink the movie automatically.

4th-Most players wont read a dvd-rw. Just use dvd-r's.
5th-Dump limewire and use a bittorrent client like utorrent.

To learn the ins and outs of cd/dvd burning try http://www.afterdawn.com or http://www.doom9.org These sites are dedicated to recording. They offer plenty of tutorials from beginner to expert.
For bittorrent try http://dessent.net/btfaq/

Can i find a region free dvd player at walmart?

tank546dow

Answer
There are advantages to buying one over the internet, price being one and the assurance you are in fact getting an all-region player. That doesn't mean you can't get a good price and region free player from a store. Most sales clerks at stores seem to be surprisingly uninformed when it comes to region free players. You're lucky if they're on the same page with you. Despite having said that, I've bought two region-free players (Philips DVP642 & Philips DVP 5140) at Fry's and Target respectively for a good price. I DO NOT recommend buying a Coby.

Where can I get free Philips DVD 8631 drivers to download?

Yardie

I have a Dell 8400 that went belly-up and had to re-install all of Dell's apps and drivers but there weren't any list for the Philips and is still giving problem. I replaced the Power Supply to keep it from spontaneously shutoff. Registry repair rendered about 3 weeks of operation. Now re-intalled and occasional memory problem while using the DVD drive.

Answer
Windows XP should automatically install the standard IDE drivers, you should not need anything else.

If you are having memory problems, open up your device manager and remove the DVD player. Restart the computer and have it find the device again.

My blu ray player will play DVD's but not blu ray movies, Why is that?

Drew

It says can not load disc but it will play some blu ray movies but most of them it will not play. I just bought contraband and a few other new blu ray movies and it will not play them. The player is only 6 monthes old, what do I need to do?

Answer
First of all have you ever updated your Blu-Ray player's firmware before from the default that came along. IF NOT go to player's website and look for the firmware to the model of your player. Sometime you need to do that in order to play certain movies, IF there are NO parts problems. When I first got Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skeynet Edition it would not load up to the menu screen and stay at the loading wait on my Pioneer BDP-51FD. So I looked online for info, and that got me to do my very first firmware update, and NOT leave it at the default firmware that came along. This was back in late May or early June of 2010. After I updated the firmware to 1.65 from the company's site. I had never update my Blu-Ray player's firmware since I got it in mid February of 2009.

I had this problem when the remake of True Grit was released back in June of 2011. I got it the second or third day. The first time I put it in my Pioneer BDP-51FD it would not play, after it finished saying closed and went to loading. It would stay at that to a certain point(I would guess it always the same amount of time), and then a message would show up on the HDTV screen and player's little screen saying "Can't Play This Disc" and Unknown Disc. Back then I didn't know what was going on, The first seven time I have try it in the player, it did not play at all, and the same thing happen. Altogether I try the disc in the player 22 times with in a week and three days. It only worked three different times in the player. Then my guess was that either the disc hates my player the player hates the disc or this disc of True Grit out of so many made has problems. I just return it to Costco in the end, but before doing that I did try the disc on my friend's PS3, and it work the first time in there. I also tryed it on my uncle's Sony Blu-Ray player, it also worked the first time in there.

Move forward to mid August 2011 certain Blu-Rays I got way before the release of True Grit(remake) had worked in the my Pioneer player with no problems. The first one I notice with that problem was Casino, I had got that back in early April of last year, and it had always worked. Ever since mid August more and more started not to play on the player, with the same problem as True Grit. What I have notice was when it would not play and with the same messages is that there is no fan like spinning sound, when it does disc loading. I have also sat in front of the Blu-Ray player, with the TV sound turn down to listen and notice no fan like spinning sound. When I first had this problem I had also found two forums with sections devoted to my player. One is a section at http://www.avsforum.com, with 1009 pages, and at http://www.blu-ray.com. As time went on the Blu-Rays that did not play on the Pioneer, that had worked before with no problems are The Magnificent Seven, Cop Out, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Never Say Never Again(sometime works sometime don't), Spy Game, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard With A Vengeance(sometime works sometime don't), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I Have not try all of my Blu-Rays in the player. Sometime new ones I get will not play the first time in the player like Taken, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, X-Men: First Class and The Guns Of Navarone. Sometime there are new one that will still play first time in the player, like Cowboy And Aliens. It just will it still play as time go by say two and half months later.

What the people on the two forums have said was either one of these is the problem

The laser lens is dirty (Use a Blu-ray laser lens cleaner to clen it the kind that come with a brush. IF it more stubborn, open up the player and use Q-tip to clean it.)

The laser lens is starting to die

The drive could be starting to die( one person said the drive for the model I have, have known problem)

They say it has nothing to do with the firmware update, which I did do since I updated mine from 1.65 to 1.71 when there was problems with playing True Grit and then to 1.72 when my older Blu-Rays started not to play that use to with no problem. And still the problem is still there for me.

One thing no one have said was how to tell is the laser lens just dirty and it not starting to die at all. Alos that there are NO parts problem.

When I told my uncle about it, he told me it parts can't be dying at all. It must be like a record player when there a little piece of bread crum on it, it will not play the record in it right way. I have yet to buy a blu-ray laser lens cleaner and try that. I know all those disc will work in another player. Right now 100% no problems with the DVD and CD side of the Blu-Ray player.

The best thing for you is to ask a home theater expert or store a worker that sell this kind of stuff like at Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi or those good mom and pop kinds. Also try the disc at friend and relative's player to see does it work. Last of all look for forums devoted to your player, and post questions

I have a Ford DVD player in my car with a DVD stuck inside. How can I get it out?

I have the rear facing, roof mounted DVD player in my 2002 Ford Focus. I put a DVD in and it won't play nor will it eject. I would like to get it out. The DVD player is the type where the DVD slides in. Please tell me how I can get DVD out.

Answer
I got a CD stuck in my old Ford Escape CD player . . . the slide in type. It was a Christmas CD I had made, so it was the last thing I wanted to listen to all year long.

I finally got eye level with the player, used a flashlight and took very thin, long skinny pliers from a Brookstone tool kit (the kind that comes with the more delicate, smaller tools) . . . and I was able to grab the edge of the CD and just pull it right out. No harm was done to the player.

I never put that particular CD in the player again. I have had the most trouble with home burned CDs. I am sure you could stop by any place that installs car DVD players and ask for their help in removing your DVD too, maybe even try your Ford dealer.

Other good suggestion in involving a putty knife and tape:

DVD player?????

JM.

I just bought a DVD from the internet, but it says that it is for Australian or region 4 dvd players, but it also may be used on non region specific dvd players. My dvd is just a cheap little one that I bought on sale for like 15 dollars, but it works fine. Do you think that this dvd will work on my dvd player?? I don't think that my dvd player is "region specific" but I don't really know what that means however. I don't know if it will help, but if you want the link to the dvd that I bought it is:

http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=737948

And on this website it says, "click here for world dvd standards, and here is that link:

http://shop.abc.net.au/help/viddvdinfo.shtm

Thanks so much, I really hope that you can help me!! And I also hope that I didn't just waster 40 dollars!!!!

~Kim

Answer
There are two things that your DVD player will need to overcome. The first is the Region 4 and the second is PAL. Your player may be able to play Region 4, but I do not know if it will play PAL DVD's. PAL is the standard broadcasting format outside the US (we use NTSC).

There are shops that will convert PAL to NTSC, but this appears to be a copyrighted DVD, so you can't do it legally.

Alternatively, if you have a computer or laptop with a DVD drive, you can deifnitely play it. You may want to search YAHOO ANSWERS
for how to change the region code on your computer's dvd drive. It's not too hard.

Good luck, maybe your DVD will work on your player.

My comp did not come with a dvd player to watch movies on it is windows xp. so is it posible to download one from the internet and then play movies or do i need to go and buy and have someone install a dvd player?on my comp, thanks, Roseanna

Answer
A DVD player is hardware so it would be kinda hard to download.

If your computer did not come with a DVD player it may not have a video card able to support one either. If you have a computer repair shop in your area, check them out. You can probably get a used one for the same price as the upgrade would cost you.

What is the best dvd player for kids to use?

C

I've seen commercials for the kid tough dvd player - but reviews say the screen is REALLY tiny and it still skips when the kids drops it, so is it really worth the money?

I've seen another one that was the same size but cheaper and not as "tough".

Have you ever bought one for your kids? What brand was it and do you like it?

Suggestions?
Oh - I have two boys who are two and a daughter who is three. So I need one that's durable. They're not that rough with their toys - but they are toddlers. The DVD player is for when we take long trips.
@Pensburg = THANKS! We're taking a trip from MA to NC and need to keep the kids entertained. I did read that the kid tough one has less then 2 hours battery - and the kid to charge it in your car is another $40

Answer
I honestly wouldn't spend any money on the tough kid dvd player that you've seen in commercials getting dropped down the steps and stuff. If you're mainly going to use it for long trips, aka in the car, then I'd suggest just buying a normal portable dvd player. I don't what kind of vehicle you drive so you'd have to determine the best way to secure it in the car. Here's the link for the tough kid dvd player:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10040339

Here's a list of much cheaper portable dvd players that cost almost half the price, that have larger screens, and more battery life:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000590491%204027&name=%2475%20-%20%24100

Because in all honesty I don't see the purpose of the tough kid dvd player for use in a car. Now if they are in the house, that might be a different story with your kids, but if they really want to watch a dvd why can't you just stick it into one of the televisions/dvd players around the house? And save yourself 140 bucks?

Should I get a DVD player installed in my new car (for the kids) or get an ipad?

Betsy C.

I have two kids and they like to watch movies on long car trips. I am debating whether to get a flip-down DVD player installed in the back seat or to invest in an ipad. I plan on having the car for 6-7 years. Will DVD's be a thing of the past by then? Can I get wireless headphones for the ipad?

Answer
I have used both flip-down DVD players and my iPad on car rides, and there are a lot of pros and cons to each. I'll list many of them here.

DVD Player Pros:

-They're usually less expensive, for one thing. Most are from $50-$300, while the iPad ranges from $499-$829 (depending on storage size and whether it has AT&T's 3G service or not).

-If you have an extensive DVD collection already and get a DVD player, then you don't have to get or set up anything else in order to see your movies- pop in your DVD and press play!

-DVD players are probably pretty durable in the hands of little kids because many DVD players (at least the ones that I've used) are made of hard metal or plastic (depends on the device though).

-DVD players are also pretty lightweight and portable (again, depends on the device).

DVD Player Cons:

-If the car trip is more than two hours long, you would need to bring more than one DVD, and DVDs can get scratched, broken, and take up a lot of space when in their cases.

-Watching movies is the only thing that a DVD player can do.

-Speaking from my experience only, many DVD players don't usually have a terrific battery life (a few hours).

-And they obviously have very small screens.

iPad Pros:

-The iPad wins hands down on screen size. Its dimensions are 9.56 by 7.47 inches, delivering an incredible HD viewing experience when you see the video in landscape mode.

-The iPad has what's known as in-plane switching technology, which gives it a wide viewing angle so that everybody in the back seat can see the movie- no more shouldering to get a better look at a movie on a tiny screen.

-You can buy multiple movies and TV shows from iTunes for $9.99-$14.99 each (or rent them for 30 days for about $0.99-$4.99 each) and download them directly onto your iPad (either by moving them from iTunes on your computer to the iPad, or directly from the built-in iPad iTunes app), and the iPad will hold them all easily, unlike a DVD player, which can only read one physical DVD disc at a time.

-There are many iPad apps that view videos too, ranging from the ABC Player (shows you recent episodes of ABC shows for free) to Hulu Plus (shows you 2,000+ episodes of many TV series for $10/month) to Netflix for iPad (allows you to stream thousands of movies on your iPad with a Netflix subscription, which costs anywhere from $4.00-$23.00/month, depending on your plan)

-There are also plenty of other options for non-video entertainment on an iPad once the movies are done; unlike a DVD player, you can play incredible HD games (many of them are free), read children's books on e-reader apps like Amazon's Kindle and Apple's iBooks or interactive one book apps such as Alice for iPad, and, of course, listen to iPod music, just to name a few.

-And the most important pro is that the iPad has a claimed battery life of up to 10 hours without charging, even with videos playing, so it won't die on you in the middle of the car ride (although I've seen it last for closer to 12 hours).

iPad Cons:

-The iPad is a little heavier than a DVD player, at about 1.5 pounds (this might cause your kids' arms to get tired, but you can prop it up with Apple's $30 iPad case).

-The iPad easily reflects direct sunlight and gets VERY smudgy from fingerprints after a while.

-Because it has a backlit screen, the iPad may give your kids eye strain if they view it for too long (although you can turn down the brightness in Settings -> Wallpaper and Brightness).

-It is slippery and its screen or titanium back can scratch or even break from a drop.

-If your kids want to watch the third party video apps or surf the web in the car, you would need the iPad Wi-Fi & 3G, which is more expensive and comes with a hefty AT&T plan of $15-$30/month for 150 MB-2 GB of data.

Unfortunately, there are no wireless headphones for the iPad that I know of, and even if they worked using the iPad's Bluetooth, I wouldn't know how they would work or what you would need them for.

And don't worry, DVDs don't seem to be in any danger of going out of style any time soon (if anything, they face a threat from Blu-Ray discs.)

Answer
There is little chance that you will be able to make it work.

Consult a repair shop.

The problem you are experiencing is probably
the reason why the thing was offered for sale.

Upshot:
You should have tested the unit before buying it.

do you own a portable dvd player?

M

which brand did you buy
Which brand and what model / screen size

Ryn, thanks but I'm a girl as you can see. :P

Answer
No. The kids do though. They are all either broken or will be broken soon. My "better half" buys them at Walmart. I won't set foot in that place. That's at least part of the reason for the high failure rate. That they are junk purchased at Walmart, not the fact that I won't shop there myself.

Can Computer DVD players detect the different DVD regions?

jb

Or can they be played on the computer no matter what Region they are? (Region 1, region 2 etc.)

Answer
DVD players on computers have the option to change the region code, but you are only allowed to change the region code 4 times, after that the system would have to be reformatted and reloaded in order to get 4 more changes.

You can view the current region code by

1. Goto Start
2. Right click My Computer
3. Select Properties
4. Select Hardware Tab
5. Select the Device Manager button
6. Select the plus next to DVD/CD rom drives.
7. Right click the DVD drive that you use to play DVDs
8. Select DVD Region, there you can see current and change the current region. It will also tell you how many changes are left.

Good luck!

Wifi not working for phone or DVD player...?

CeCe

I have a Netgear DGN100 modem/router. Last week I was trying to figure out why the internet was not working on my laptop but the Netflix through my DVD player was still working. I pushed the "restore to factory settings" on the back which made a huge problem for me. I finally figured out on my own how to fix the internet on my laptop (since Netgear's tech support was wanting $30 for the first 30minutes to fix it for me). However, now I am not able to get my DVD or iphone to connect to the wifi. I've tried several different passwords, password reset and nothing is working. If someone could please help me figure this out, I would very much appreciate it! Thanks so much!
I pushed the "restore to factory settings" button on the back of the modem/router.

Answer
what did you push back to factory settings: DVD player or Router.

Just leave it open and have your devices connect to it via their Mac Address, through the routers filter.

Tech Help!!! internet capability on DVD player. but I need WiFI?

RunCruzRun

Here is the situation
I have a Blu-Ray DVD player that comes with internet capability (Sony Model No. BDP-S185)
Sadly it does not have WiFi capability, it only supports the classic Ethernet cable.
I have a router that supports both Ethernet and Wireless capabilities. (Netgear Model No. WGT624v4)

My problem is that I cannot run an ethernet cable, I am not willing to purchase a new Blu-Ray Player that supports WiFi, And I cannot Install a Router closer to my location where I may use a much shorter Ethernet Cable.

Is there some sort of wireless adapter that i can plug in to the Ethernet port just might do the trick?
Budget is about $40 USD, I will make slight negotiations in price up to $50 maybe but my parameters will remain the same.
I understand a unit like this may require power, so plugging in a USB or plugging into a wall socket is completely acceptable. The DVD player I own has a USB port but does not support wireless adapters in that specific port (The USB Port)

Answer
Sony does make a USB Wireless LAN Adaptor for sony blu-ray player. But it costs more than a new player would cost. The problem you are going to have is you won't be able to install the software for a regular wireless adapter.Samsung makes then for their dvd players around $30.You would think Sony would to.Check Sony web site you might find one there that will work with your model blu ray.

Headrest DvD players vrs. Flip down DvD players?

Jamee W

Does anyone have either a flip down dvd player or the dvd players in the headrests of their car/van/truck/suv? If you can you please tell me the pros and cons of them. We are looking to get one or the other for our dodge sport caravan for long trips that we take with 3 kids under the age of 8. If you could please also state how much you paid for it, where you got it from, and where you got it installed and the cost of the instillation. Thanks!
We already have 2 portable dvd players and want something for the van that does not have all of the cords with a 7yo, 5yo, and 3yo who the cords are always getting ripped out when they move in and out of the van. And they pop out so the 3 year old is always touching the screen and opening it and slamming it shut (broke one of them so that you can only use the screen when the other one is playing a movie). We paid over $250 for them they came as a pair and are ment to be straped to the back of the headrests but can also be used out side of the car. We are going to keep them for our ford focus but want something that has all the wires hiden and so on for our new van. Thanks though!

Answer
Personally, I'm for portable DVD players you attach to the headrest but that can be used outside of the vehicle as well. We have had 2 portable DVD players that have been incredibly reliable and both were purchased at Wal-Mart. The first was a Cody model w/ a 7" screen (cost: approx. $80 on sale). This player went everywhere with us; car trips, airplane rides, etc. It came in handy while waiting in the airport, gave us entertainment & a place to play our Disney Scene It! game during a rain-soaked family camping trip, even allowed me to watch a movie while she was watching a cartoon at the hotel. It was stolen last summer which is why we purchase our second one, a tablet style model who brand name is completely escaping my mind, anyways it was $150 but comes with a battery that holds a charge for several hours (we've played 2.5 fairly long (90-120 minutes each) movies before it said to charge it).

My only advice with the portable models is to get one that either allows the screen to be swiveled & folded flat against the player while viewing or a tablet-style model. It will hold nicely against the back of the headrest and won't take up too much room.

How do i install a headrest dvd player???........?

Amy

Ok so I bought this headrest dvd player from ebay and the sounds is not working. Everything (video) except the sound is working. Can you please tell me what is wrong with it. And by the way i'm installing it on a Chevy Avalanche 2008.

Answer
there should be speaker wires running from the dvd player out of the headrest, youve got to tie those wires into your factory speakers to get sound unless youve got on with built in speakers, but those are rare

Is it worth it to buy an hd dvd player?

Jack

Answer
Well, it depends.

All the HD-DVD players in existence were made by Toshiba (a couple of companies sell re-labeled HD-DVD players, and two othercompanies made Blu-Ray players that also handled HD-DVD), so they're pretty similar. HD-DVD players all play DVDs, they all upconvert nicely (some people claim it's the best upconversion around, though IMHO the PS3 does at least as well). So, for the price of a DVD player, or less, the HD-DVD player will make a fine DVD player.

However, you may miss out on some "advanced" features.. many regular DVD players play MP3s, DivX video, show JPEGs, etc. from CD and DVD. If these things are important to you, double-check, since they are not likely supported in the existing HD-DVD players.

As for buying HD-DVDs, there you have a bigger question. The DVDs you buy today are likely to last well beyond the life of any single player, and there's every reason to believe they'll be playable on readily available hardware for the forseeable future. HD-DVDs, on the other hand, will only play on HD-DVD players, which are no longer made. So if you do buy any HD-DVD discs, they're probably good only for the life of your existing player. Some HD-DVD fans have bought-up extra units. While it's impossible to say for certain, your HD-DVD player should last at least 3-5 years, but when it's gone, it's not likely replaceable.

And of course, no one's releasing new HD-DVD titles. If you can pick some up cheap (like, for the price of rental), I see no reason not to if you have an HD-DVD player. But if you're really interested in high def video going forward, Blu-Ray is that future. .

BTW, there's only one or two layers in an HD-DVD disc or Blu-Ray, just as with DVD. More layers are theoretically possible with Blu-Ray, perhaps up to eight, but none exist, and they would not necessarily play on all existing Blu-Ray players (maybe the PS3, with an upgrade.. Sony seems to use it to test out any new Blu-Ray option).

Hi which Toshiba HD-DVD player should I buy for my "50" Hitachi HDTV/LCD & it is 1080i resolution?

GAMER VET

Hi I want to buy Toshiba HD-DVD player. Since my HDTV it is 1080i resolution & I am looking for cost less then $220.

Thank you!
Please don't tell me to buy the blu-ray instead! I choose HD-DVD & everyone has different taste. I also don't care of the format war either! The format war will be over in the next 9 yrs.

Answer
HD DVD is the better choice for HD disks ... more capable player and stable/final specification. I've also read that HD DVD players are better upscaling DVD players for when you want to watch DVDs. Ignore all the brainwashed blu-ray fans!

That said you really only have one choice if you want the Toshiba name on it ... the HD-A3 (and since you only have a 1080i HDTV it's all you need.

However, there is another option -- the Venturer SHD7000 -- $198 at Walmart. In reality it is a rebranded HD-A3 so it's really a Toshiba. The only consideration is the "free" disk offer. As I understand it the real Toshiba qualifies for more movies, so the price difference (based on what price you can find the HD-A3 at) may be the deciding factor. Your choice. The link is to the SHD7000 owners thread at AVS Forum.

where can i find the instructional manual for apex dvd player model ad-1118?

Answer
Why The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-118?

We chose the Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 because it had all the features and functions we needed. It also looked very attractive being a sleek and slim design. We had limited room to put this unit in our bedroom and this small and compact unit was a perfect fit for the 19" TV and the small cubicle it fits into. The price was also right at a mere $39.95. I was surprised to see how much DVD's had gone down in price since we last bought one. Sure, there are more expensive brands out there and better quality. We didn't want to invest in much here because the Home Theater system is under warranty and this is just an extra unit for the bedroom.

Features And Functions

The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 plays most media type discs including MP3's, DVD's and CD's. It is very small, thin and compact. The dimensions are 12.5" wide by 2" high and 9.75 inches deep. The specifications says it weights 3.74 lbs. and I would have said 3 if taking a guess. It's very lightweight and when pushing the open/close button you have to be careful as to not push the unit off the shelf!

This unit has the following features:

Progressive Scan- Images appear as complete scan allowing for a more complete and clear picture per frame. Picture will now show any flickering or scan lines.

Parental Lock- No mention of how to use this feature in the manual!

Slow Motion Forward- Plays DVD in slow motion.

Zoom (2x and 4x)- Enlarges the picture.

Component Output- For use with HDRV/EDTV sets to incorporate progressive scan capabilities.

S-Video/Composite Video Outputs- Connects TV to DVD Player.

Compatible With Kodak Picture CD's/JPEG- View your pictures as a slide show on your TV screen.

Coaxial Digital Output /PCM Ready - To use when hooking up an amplifier or receiver.

Plays MP3's, DVD's and CD's- Also compatible with CD-DA, CD-R and CD-RW formats.

Remote Control- My first thought is to ask any man. They are the king's of remote controls. (LOL) Ok, back to reality here. The remote allows you to control the settings without having to get up and push buttons on the unit.

Owner's Manual- Required reading if you want to know *everything* about this unit!

Warranty

The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 comes with a 1 year parts warranty and 90 day labor warranty.

My Thoughts On The Apex AD1118 DVD Player

We have been using this DVD player for a couple of months now. In addition to the unit we purchased for the travel trailer, we came home and bought another one for our bedroom at home. It is a good basic unit for under $50 and the performance has been pretty good for us.

I do have one complaint and that is about the remote control. It seems to hang up when using the OPEN/CLOSE button and you have to push the button numerous times to get it to function. This is the only complaint so far. I will update the review if anything else pops up.

I like to use My Simon - http://www.mysimon.com - just search portable DVD player into the search engine and you can then search the results by price. It's a great way to compare apples to apples, so to speak. Julie
