is it necessary to buy a region free dvd player?

Midnight D

I am looking to get a dvd that is not in my countries region. and am looking to get a region free dvd player is the the best way to go? is one needed?

Answer
For one DVD, not necessarily. You can watch or rip it on the computer.

If you will make it a practice of buying foreign DVDs, then yes, get a region free or region changeable player.

Region free dvd player...?

The Dude

I just bought an imported dvd and now I need a region free dvd player for my TV. Know where I can buy one around the Los Angeles area?

Answer
you wont be able to fine a region free dvd player in any local store, but you can buy it online for very low prices. Here is good place where i got mine from, i got it in 3 days, and it was free shipping. And the dvd player works perfectly plays all region, code free, and the quality is great. Here is the one i got.

http://bargainoffers.com/catalog/pioneer-dv400vk-black-multi-region-code-free-hdmi-dvd-player-p-1330.html

But if you dont need a HD 1080P up convert dvd player, then they also have this one,

http://bargainoffers.com/catalog/pioneer-dv300s-multi-region-code-free-dvd-player-p-1342.html

I would definetly recommend this place for region free dvd players, their shipping is fast and they customer service is great.

Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Q. Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Answer
Upconverting DVD players (or blu-ray players for that matter) are only worthwhile if you have a HDTV. They will do nothing to enhance your image on a regular TV.

Since blu-ray players will also upconvert DVDs on HDTVs, the only reason to buy just an upconverting DVD player instead of a blu-ray player is the fact that upconverting DVD players are under $50 whereas blu-ray players are about $150.

Questions about my tv and buying a dvd player?

sls.spec

I have a new big-screen HDTV that is capable of 1080p, on the way. Sony Bravia KDL-40V4100. My family is old-fashioned and way behind the times in technology. All that we have is a 4-head vcr and a ton of VHS movies. I got a huge discount on this tv through my employer (by the vendor), so I went ahead and got a flat screen 40" tv. It was $600 bucks after taxes. They probably never will get HDTV (at least not right now), but I wanted that option there if they ever do.

I'm planning on buying a combination 4-head vcr/dvd player. I figure that maybe I should just get a combo vcr/dvd burner while I'm at it (it's not much more in price). For one reason...just to save some space later on, I figured that we might want to record from VHS to DVD and ditch the clunky VHS tapes - while keeping the movies. I know that the quality from VHS will still be VHS - even if dubbed onto a DVD, of course. But I have a couple of questions: Can all DVD burners record onto a dvd directly from the tv? I know that many record from VHS to DVD and vice versa, but I've only seen one so far that said you could record directly to DVD from the tv.

Keep in mind that my family doesn't even have cable - they use regular tv reception with rabbit ears. I just wanted to get them a thinner tv that was larger and easier to see. A blu-ray player is definitely not something we'll be getting. So what is my best bet for a dvd player? Will 1080p 'upconversion' dvd players look better on this tv than the typical 480p or whatever it is that regular dvd players play? Or would getting an upconverting dvd player (to 1080p) be a waste of money?

Secondly...what exactly is 'upconverting'? Is it beneficial to have? I'm confused as to how one can see a "1080p" (or 1080i) picture from like a 480 (or whatever it is) picture quality from a regular dvd?

Answer
Upconverting dvd players just take the 480 and do a fill in the lines thing so when the picture is displayed on an HD tv it looks a little better. Any dvd player, when hooked into your new tv will be upconverted by the tv, as all HD tvs upconvert any signal received to their native resolution, in your case 1080p. Some regular dvds, newer ones, look pretty good if your dvd player has component (red/green/blue) cable output, if not, nothing will look good carried over analog cables. So you could get a new dvd player with component output if you don't already have one, but you don't need the upconverting ones as your tv will do that anyway.

Your VCR will look bad. Don't copy to dvds as it's a losing effort.

And when you get your tv, if you are close enuf to transmission towers, run a scan for available digital channels, you will come up with quite a few HD stations without cable. Check the owner's manual for the procedure, but many antenna people get some nice HD that way, for free. Someone else said you'd need a converter box, that is not right, you're getting a digital tv which should continue working without a box in Feb, and there should also be more free HD coming your way. (So maybe you guys may want to get a better antenna as you'll have better reception with a more powerful outdoor? antenna, or even an indoor antenna with power boost.)

the ultimate dvd player???

andrewdevl

i am looking for the ultimate dvd player. money is sort of an object but im willing to consider any price. i want the following

hdmi output
divx playback (divx high def would be brilliant)
memory card/memory stick slot
dolby 5.1 output

i dont need every single one of these specifications but if there is a player out there that does have all the features listed above then i have found the ultimate dvd player! any help is massively appreciated and any links to sites where i can buy such a player would be great! thankyou

Answer
Why buy the ultimate dvd player? Blu ray is taking over dvd, and the blu ray players will play dvd discs.

Anyhow, the Denon DVD-A1XVA is an absolutely stunning dvd player, its even been said to be the best dvd player you can get, ive seen more exspensive but high price doesnt always mean high quality. The Denon DVD-A1XVA costs £2700 or $5000 approx, you might get it a little cheaper.

Other outstanding players (dvd) are:
Marantz DV9600
Naim DVD5
Meridian G98
Arcam DiVA DV139

Of course they all need top notch partenering equipment to appreciate there quality and price.

Sony BDP-S350 blu ray player (just launched onto the market) at £230 or $450 approx, not costly but absolutely outstanding, its getting raving reviews from the experts. Also look at the Panasonic DMP-BD50, also extremely good, not exspensive, its on the net and theres quite a bit of money knocked off it.

Wait till Autumn, there is going to be new ranges of equipment coming out. The focus from companies will be on blu ray players.

good luck with whatever you choose.

Sony SLV-D983 DVD/VCR Combo Player has good reviews....?

Lake

...Where can it be found at the best price available?
Where can I purchase the Sony SLVD983 DVD/VCR combo player for the best price? Is there a better choice for quality at an affordable price? Need to minimize space and rid the extra units. Does the quality depend upon the TV? It is for a second TV (25" Sanyo) in the bedroom. Any input on language filters as separate units ... for the grandchildren who visit? There are some movies that would be far better without foul language exposure. Thanks!

If I buy a multi-region DVD player in Australia can I watch region 1 DVDs on it?

Crazy Cupc

Australia is region 4, USA and Canada are region 1, I want to buy some TV series on DVD which are 10x cheaper in region 1 format, if I spend $30 on a multi-region DVD player will I be able to watch region 1 DVDs on it? I assume it should work since it's called a multi-region DVD player but I can totally imagine that after I buy one I'll find out it doesn't bloody work or something.

Answer
More than likely such a player will ignore region altogether, and convert the video format on the disc to your TV format.

The only real issue is getting US based DVD vendors to ship to Australia at all.

Multi Region Philips DVD Player? Help?

Jillian d

I have a Philips DVD Video player and I'm from Australia and I just bought a region 2 DVD (I know my laptop can play it) and I was wondering is this DVD player a multi region, (meaning it can play all regions) and if so can you just put the DVD in and press play and it will work or do I have to get a code somewhere to make it work? Can anyone tell me, or help me? That would be great if someone can help me, thanks!

Love

~*Jillo*~

Answer
Hi there Jillo,
What is the model number of your player?
I need that to help you ; )
As a rule that I have found, most big name players are not multi region, you are better off buying a "throw away" player. This seems to be one of the rare times when cheaper is better.
Hope this was helpful.

Where can I get the best deal for Sony DVP-NS710H B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player?

unwonted

Where can I find a really good deal online for Sony DVP-NS710H B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player

Answer
DVP-NS710H/B Sony DVD Player with 1080p Upscaling and HDMI
Regular price: $79.00
Sale price: $64.00
You Save: $15.00

Make movie night more enjoyable and watch your DVDs in striking 1080p HD resolution with this upscaling DVD player.

Breathe new life into your DVD collection. The DVP-NS710H/B DVD player upscales your existing DVD collection to gorgeous 1080p HD resolution via an HDMI⢠connection. This DVD player is also equipped with BRAVIA® Sync⢠which gives you one-remote access and control of your DVD player and other BRAVIA Sync-compatible devices. In addition to exceeding ENERGY STAR® compliance levels, you'll also enjoy uncompromised audio quality with Dolby® and dts® digital outputs, as well as an analog audio two-channel output. You can even view photos and listen to music in a wide variety of formats. Includes A/V cable and remote control with batteries.

# Features DVD upscale to 1080p near HD resolution via HDMI⢠- 1080p upscaling DVD player via HDMI⢠connection: DVD upscaling via HDMI⢠makes your existing standard DVDs look better on your HDTV by upscaling them to 1080p near HD Resolution.

# BRAVIA® Sync - BRAVIA Sync capability combines the one-touch access and control functionality of BRAVIA Sync⢠with the ability to control BRAVIA Sync-compatible devices, such as Sony HDTVs and receivers.

# Exceeds ENERGY STAR® standards - Many home audio and video devices can use significant power, even when turned off and in standby mode. The DVP-NS710H, however, was built for energy efficiency. It uses under 0.1W of power in standby mode, far exceeding ENERGY STAR® compliance levels and using less power than most other DVD players.

# Multi-brand TV remote control - Switching back and forth between remote controls while watching television or a movie is a hassle. The DVP-NS710H comes with a compact remote control that allows you to operate most major brands of television and your DVD player.

# Multiple format disc playback - The DVP-NS710H isn't just for movies. You can enjoy movies, as well as photos and music, in a wide variety of formats. The player supports DVD/DVD-RW/DVD-R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL and CD-R/CD-RW discs runs WMA, AAC, LPCM, MPEG1 (Cyber-shot® movie), and JPEG files.

# Precision Cinema Progressive⢠technology - Many other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level; the Sony® Precision Cinema Progressive system, however, detects image changes at the pixel level. The picture is more faithful to the source -- whether film or video -- because special algorithms handle the different pixel behavior. The technology also employs separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from artifacts.

# Precision Drive⢠3 system - Past generations of Precision Drive were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. Sony® Precision Drive 3 simplifies the process by moving the lens -- instead of the entire optical block -- for faster and more accurate error correction.

# Photo TV HD - Bring your photos to life and enjoy highly detailed, Full HD 1920 x 1080p images with the PhotoTV HD mode. PhotoTV HD works with your DVD player and HDMI⢠output to fine tune sharpness, gradation, and color, displaying images that more closely match the look of printed photos.

# Fast/slow playback with sound - Fast and slow playback with sound lets you advance through scenes quickly and ensures you never miss a word.

# Multiple-disc resume - With multiple-disc resume, you can power up and return to the last scene you were watching on up to six discs without having to search. Start and stop a movie or switch DVDs -- the player will know exactly where you last left off.

# Dolby® digital output; dts® coaxial digital output - The DVP-NS710H includes support for enhanced audio formats from Dolby and dts and provides connectivity to older receivers and televisions, making the player compatible with many existing audio systems. Also included is an analog audio two-channel output.

Answer
I just bought a Phillips Up-converting because I have a lot of DVD's that I like but am not going to spend all the money to replace them with Blu-Ray..

Note: Why would my answer be wrong. I stated pretty clearly why I bought one.
You can't play regular DVD's on a Blu-Ray.

And yes, your regular DVD's will look better on the up-converting player.

Driving to Florida with 4 kids, and one on the way... tips?

Preggo egg

We go to Florida every March break with the kids. This year it'll be easier because all the kids are; of course- a year older, and more mobile. The twins are 3 and my other 2 are 5 and 7. However, this year I'm pregnant. Not even a month yet, but I have terrible morning sickness ALL DAY. I must admit, it isn't as bad as it was last week (I'm taking something for it), but it still gets bad, and I'm afraid the long drive there (24 hours to be exact) is going to be sticky.

Any advice on how to keep myself sane, and how to keep the kids occupied? I know I've been down there about 10 times, but it's always a challenge and I'll take any extra advice I can get! We will be stopping in Washington to sleep a few hours before continuing to drive!

Thanks!
Also, we're staying at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando... anyone been there/knows anyone about it?

Answer
Ge them each a little backpack and pack it with things that your children like to do, relevant to their age group, as well as little snacks and such. You can go to the dollar store and get them little games and stuff to keep them occupied such as perhaps crayons, coloring books, writing pad, pencil, little toys, perhaps small books, or even cheap mp3 players with their favorite songs on them. etc. It would also not be a bad idea to pick up a portable dvd player for your children to watch little movies and stuff on. You can also set up a little scavenger hunt for them, (such as find mommy a green car, etc) you can play I spy, and even sing along to their favorite songs with them. Perhaps you can even find them a cheap kids camera (wal-mart, 20 dollars apiece) and let them take pictures of all the interesting things they see and etc. this will keep them busy for a while.

you can go to craigslist.org and find a cheap portable dvd player in your area that you can buy. My husband and I found an awesome one for our 2 year old son when we went on a trip to oregon (we flew... 18 hour trip including layovers, and three planes there, three back....) and we paid only $40 dollars for it.

also if you have a few extra dollars, it would be a great investment to pick up some little leapster for your children, as these have multiple games they can mix and match and can keep them occupied for hours.

you can probably find one or two cheap on ebay, craigslist ( i just looked and they have them used for as low as $25), or go to wal-mart, they are $50 apiece, but they will provide you with sanity for years to come.

also how about driving down at night. That way the children will be asleep and you can keep your sanity then as well. just pack extra sipppy cups in case they wake up, and put on some soft music in the car. You can watch your kids the day before and let your husband get some rest, and then when he is driving down, you can rest, or since the kids will already be asleep, if he gets too tired, he can pull over at a rest stop for a few hours. then when you get to florida, you watch the kids for a few hours while he takes a nap, he can do the same for you, and that night, start up with you old routine.

Airplane trip with 3 toddlers!! YIKES! HELP PLEASE!?

MomE

In about 2 weeks I am planning to take my toddlers (early 3 year old twin boys and a 4 year old girl) on a plane trip to Universal Studios. I am SUPER NERVOUS about them flying on the plane and semi nervous about the amusement park and hotel. Does anyone have any toddler travel tips?? My girl will probably be okay but my boys are still in tantrum mode. Is there a way that they can all be contained on the plane?

Answer
I have one word for you......

PORTABLE DVD PLAYER

or an ipod with video function...or a laptop on which you can play dvds.
I have only one child, but have done many long international flights (and all my friends travel with their small kids)....and the dvd player has been a life-saver.
This is in addition to a little bag each with small toys. A small colouring book with crayons or coloured pencils.....and the great success for the 21/2-31/2 age....a sticker book with reusable stickers (do NOT get stickers that you cannot remove in case they stick them around the plane)....a magic drawing board (my dollar store has small ones)...
Bring snacks that take a lot of concentration to eat....cherios, raisins etc.....maybe a selection of small bags of snacks. If you can order child meals make sure you do....the childrens meals arrive first. Find out how much liquid you can bring and use that for juice....a great calming agent.......in my expereince the flight attendants brought juice pretty quickly too!
Also make sure that you get on the plane last (even though small children can board first)....you want them to be able to expend as much energy as possible BEFORE they get on the plane. I always waited near the gate until they announced final call (if there is an empty gate lounge nearby they can use it to play hide and seek until the last minute).
Also check out the airport website (if they have one)..... some big airports have kids play rooms.
Don`t expect help from ANYONE....even the flight attendants!
So visualise how you will carry everything. I got my little girl a wheely bag when she was just turned 3 and she loves wheeling it herself (with her toys/activites inside). You can do this with your little girl.....but only you know if that will work with your boys (maybe small backpacks might be better)

Get to the airport with plenty of time to spare.....watch the planes taking off then let them run off energy before getting on the plane.

I wish you so much luck. In my experience the mobile baby days were more difficult than the toddler/preschooler days......but I have a friend with twins (now 4 yo) and I have watched them wind each other up......so I can totally understand your panic. Luckily this age is more easily entertained than the 1-2 age group.

You will survive!!!!

To watch in 3d do I have to buy 3d blu ray disc or 2d dvd is enough. I have 3d TV and 3d blu ray player?

Smith

I have everything in 3d : 3d blu ray player, 3d TV, and 3d glasses. I wanted to buy a movie in a blu ray disc.To watch the movie in 3d, I want to know if I need to buy it as a 3d blu ray disc or just a blu ray disc. In other words will my 3d blue ray player/ 3d TV be able to convert a 2d disc into 3d, OR do I need to buy a 3d blu ray disc to do this?

Answer
For the movie to be good 3D, you need a disc that has a 3D movie on it. Some players can convert 2D to 3D but that doesn't work remotely as well as 3D source material.

Dual screen portable DVD player with battery?

Laura C

Does anyone know where I can find a dual screen portable DVD player with battery? Our current one stopped working and I cannot find one with a battery for the main screen anywhere. We like to bring the main screen on airplanes with us which is why we need the battery.

Here is a link to an example of a dual screen portable DVD player:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Element-7-Dual-Screen-Portable-DVD-Player-E750-DPD/sem/rpsm/oid/180352/catOid/-12874/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

This one does not have a battery on the main unit. It needs to be plugged in at all times (wall outlet or in the car). 95% of the time that would be okay, but on occasion we would like to be able to just take the main unit on an airplane and use it.

Thanks!

Answer
I saw your previous question a few days ago and I have not seen anything like what you want.

You may be in one of those fall off places where the device doesn't have enough market demand for what you want. But I think I have a solution.

I do think that you could find two portable DVDs that include a video out on one and a video in on the other and with a little creative wiring get what you want.

You will need two of the following players to do this and a RCA coupler set. Connect the included mini jack to RCA cable on the player with the DVD to its av out. hook the other mini to the other players input and use the coupler to hook them together.

Make sure to use headphones for best sound.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dual screen portable dvd player for the car?

DallasDad

I am especially interested in 1) sound quality 2) screen quality and 3) ease with which dvds can be changed/loaded while driving. This is for two kids in backseat so it would need a headrest harness.

Answer
There are lots of models out there, and usually very cheap.

Might I suggest getting a model that allows for input and output and not strictly for the Car. You'll need a coupler but will be able to use these elsewhere and have the ability to have games systems or two different movies on them, but this will be a question as far as age ( since these will not have a headrest harness per say). You will need to look at good headphones or a RF modulator or mini cable or tape adapter (depending on the car).

If you gave just a little more detail i would feel better about a recommendation.

Is there a portable DVD player that can also serve as an external DVD drive for my laptop?

Chuck_L

If so, where can I buy it?

My laptop does not have an optical drive (DVD or CD-ROM). If I can buy an external DVD drive that also is a DVD player with LCD screen, I will be able to kill two birds with one stone. Of course, it would not be economically sensible if such a device costs more than a DVD-ROM and DVD player combined.

Answer
No,You have to buy one,i recommend a HP USB CD DRIVE!
But i really recommend a new pc! Heres some cheap pcs and laptops:

Answer
If you know

Voltage (ex. 5 V DC or 12 V DC, etc.) and the amps required, then you can go to Radio Shack with player and buy a universal power adaptor.
(These values should be printed on the old adaptor or the manual)

Laptop comparable to apple MacBook Pro?

kornfrk272

I have the base model of MacBook Pro mid 2012. Idk if I'm liking it that well. I love the mouse and built quality. I bought it at bestbuy. Could someone help pointing me to some laptops that are under 1200 at bestbuy or a store. Don't wanna buy online. I would like similar built quality. Reason why I don't like pc laptops cuz there almost always made cheap. Thanks in advance.

PS3 anyone!?

Q. tell me everything you know about this ps3! i want the game kingdom hearts 3 on it! i want to know everything about that game too! if u know anything about those two things tell me at once! plz and thankz

Answer
Here is everything that I know about the PS3 as of date.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 (Japanese: ãã¬ã¤ã¹ãã¼ã·ã§ã³ 3,, PureisutÄshon SurÄ«?, trademarked PLAYSTATION 3,[2] abbreviated PS3) is Sony's seventh generation era video game console, third in the PlayStation series. It is the successor to the PlayStation 2 and will compete against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. The PS3 is scheduled for release on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 worldwide, and will ship in two initial configurations.

Sony officially unveiled the PS3 to the public on May 16, 2005 during an E3 conference. A functional version of the console was not at E3 2005 or the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005, although at both events, demonstrations were held on devkits (e.g. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots) and comparable PC hardware, and video footage based on the predicted PS3 specifications was produced (e.g. Mobile Suit Gundam).[3] It wasn't until E3 2006 that games were shown on actual PlayStation 3 systems. In preparation for launch, Sony has announced that there will be 27 playable PS3 titles on show at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2006 on final hardware.[4]

Thus far, public reception of the console has been mixed with the Sony stock market price declining partially due to worries about the future of the PlayStation brand and its profitability.[5] However, Sony's chief has cited its widespread developer support and advanced "future-proofed" technologies such as Blu-ray and the Cell microprocessor, as ensuring the continued success of the PlayStation platform.[6]

Overview

System configuration

Sony's initial retail strategy for the PlayStation 3 will involve two different configurations that are detailed in a Sony press release.[7] The "premium" version of the PlayStation 3 will come with an internal 60 GB hard drive, Wi-Fi connectivity, HDMI output, and multiple flash memory card readers, and features a brighter cosmetic silver-colored logo and trim. The second and alternate configuration of the console will have a 20 GB internal hard drive but will not feature Wi-Fi, HDMI, or a memory card reader. The hard drive is upgradeable, and memory card and Wi-Fi support can be added through adaptors, but the HDMI support is not upgradeable.[8]

The lack of HDMI output in the 20 GB model (as with the Xbox 360 or player lacking HDCP) could potentially cause problems with restricted output resolution on Blu-ray video. An ICT flag can be set by content producers, which forces non-HDCP video down to a pixel resolution of 960Ã540 (50% greater than DVD-Video at NTSC resolution, and 25% greater than PAL resolution). SCEA president Kaz Hirai stated that it is "too early to speculate at this point" whether movie producers will activate the ICT feature.[9] According to German publisher Spiegel, a behind-the-scenes agreement was made to not enforce the ICT flag on next-generation optical formats until at least 2010, or possibly even 2012.[10]

David Wilson, Head of Public Relations at Sony Computer Entertainment UK, stated that both models will likely be sold in the UK market, but both may not be available at launch.[13] There, Sony has said that the black color is to be the first on sale, followed by the silver and white color in March 2007.[citation needed] Previously, Sony Computer Entertainment UK Marketing Director Ray Maguire had stated that only the 60 GB version would be available at launch.[22]

In Japan, Sony has opted to go with an open pricing scheme for the 60 GB model, allowing retailers to set a price point themselves. Rakuten, one of the biggest Japanese online retailers, has set their price point at ¥71,800, or ¥75,390 with taxes added (about 675 USD).[23]

The PS3 has received mixed reviews for its price. It is significantly higher than its same-generation competition in all world markets.[24] Sony has publicly defended its pricing model, citing the PS3's higher performance and inclusion of a Blu-ray drive, of which stand-alone players cost an average of US$1,000.[9]

Game pricing
There have also been statements by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) President and CEO Kaz Hirai suggesting games may cost somewhere between $60 and $100 USD[25], more than the US$60 standard for higher-priced games.[26] Futureshop, a Canadian electronics store, has priced each game at C$69.99 (~US$62[

Backward compatibility

Sony has stated that the PlayStation 3 will have backward compatibility with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, and that every PS1 and PS2 game that observes its respective system's TRC (Technical Requirements Checklist) will be playable on PS3 at launch.[1]SCE president Ken Kutaragi asked developers to adhere to the TRC to facilitate compatibility with future PlayStations, stating that the company was having some difficulty getting backward compatibility with games that had not followed the TRCs. "Either it's accidental or on purpose; there's actually a lot of games that don't follow the TRC."[28]. It has been reported that initial PS3 units will include the CPU/rasterizer combination chip used in slim PS2 (EE+GS) to achieve backward compatibility.[29]

The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation devices, but there will be an adapter for the memory cards[5] so users can save their PS1/PS2 data on to a virtual memory card in the hard drive. USB devices for PlayStation 2 may be compatible with PlayStation 3. PlayStation 3 can use Memory Sticks to store save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.

Software development
The PlayStation 3, unlike the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 systems[citation needed], is based on open and publicly available application programming interfaces. The PlayStation 3 development kit was recently praised by IGN as having "distinct lack of noise and heat coming from the system". Despite earlier rumours of programming being difficult,[31] IGN reports that they were told that the dev kit "seemed extremely adaptive and easy to program for".[32]

Open standards

COLLADA, an open, XML-based file format for 3D models.[33]
PSGL, a modified version of OpenGL ES 1.0 (OpenGL ES 2.0 compliant except for the use of Cg instead of GLSL), with extensions specifically aimed at the PS3[34]
OpenMAX, a collection of fast, cross-platform tools for general "media acceleration," such as matrix calculations.[citation needed]
OpenVG, for hardware-accelerated 2D vector graphics.[citation needed]
Sublicensed

AGEIA's PhysX SDK, NovodeX.[citation needed]
Epic's Unreal engine 3.0 framework.[citation needed]
Havok's physics and animation engines.[35]
Pixelux's Game Asset Synthesis Technology[citation needed], a toolkit for advanced procedural synthesis and the Digital Molecular Matter engine plug in for Maya and 3d Studio Max
Cg 1.5, Nvidia's C-like shading language.[citation needed]
SpeedTree RT, a programming package produced by Interactive Data Visualization, Inc. that aims to produce high-quality virtual foliage in real time.
Kynogon's Kynapse 4.0 "large scale A.I."[36]
Considered standards

The list of standards they are reported to be considering includes:

IPv6, the next generation of the Internet Protocol. [37]
Sony has selected several technologies and arranged several sublicensing agreements to create an advanced software development kit for developers. In addition, in 2005 Sony purchased SN Systems, a former provider of Microsoft Windows-based development tools for a variety of console platforms; including PlayStation 2, GameCube, PSP and Nintendo DS to create additional GNU development tools. Sony is providing all developers with GNU toolchains[citation needed] where SN Systems will provide customer-oriented wrappers for GNU tools at an additional cost.

Interface and operating system

The PlayStation 3 version of the Cross Media Bar demonstrated at E3 2006 (video) included options for different user profiles, the ability to explore photos, play music and movies from the hard drive, compatibility for a USB Keyboard and Mouse, a full Internet browser and a Friends menu. In a separate demo Sony presented the "Marketplace" where users can buy and download music.

Linux will be pre-installed on the PS3 hard drive. Currently it is unknown if Linux will be the operating system used to run everything, including the Cross Media Bar, or if the system will operate as a dual boot environment, where Linux would be loaded from the Cross Media Bar menu.

Because we have plans for having Linux on board [the PS3], we also recognize Linux programming activities⦠Other than game studios tied to official developer licenses, we'd like to see various individuals participate in content creation for the PS3.
âIzumi Kawanishi on the presence of the Linux in the PS3.

PlayStation Network Platform

In response to Microsoft's successful Xbox Live network, Sony announced a unified online service for the Playstation 3's console at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo; tentatively titled "PlayStation Network Platform". Sony has confirmed that the service will be always connected[39], free and include multiplayer support. However developers are permitted to charge a subscription fee, as is common with MMO games.

PlayStation Network Platform (PNP or PSNP) is the online service to be provided for use with the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console.[1]

It's currently in development by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe with the Sony Online Entertainment. Parts of PNP will incorporate the Central Station (already working in Europe) and a possible integration with Connect.com marketplace.

Services
On March 15, 2006 at the PlayStation Business Briefing, Sony confirmed that they are preparing for an Xbox Live-like online service tentatively named PlayStation Network Platform with free online play and better network adapter sequencing.

The full list of planned services for the PlayStation Network Platform is as follows.[1]

Comparison to Xbox Live
Unlike Xbox Live (a service provided for the Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles, which has proved to be the most successful so far), Sony will offer a PNP "basic" service comparable to the Xbox Live Silver service, except that it will additionally allow users to play games online for free. However, the downloading of extra content is likely to require a fee.

Also, Xbox Live is a more unified service, with a central server and global ranking and lobby system. With PNP, developers can devise their own system and use their own servers to a way beneficial to the game.

Hardware specifications
Unless otherwise noted, the following specifications are based on a press release by Sony at the 2005 E3 Conference,[40] and slides from a Sony presentation at the 2006 Game Developer's Conference.[41]

The floating point performance of the whole system (CPU + GPU) is reported to be 2.18 TFLOPS[40]. PlayStation 3's Cell CPU achieves 218 GFLOPS single precision float and is reported at around 26 GFLOPS double precision.

Central processing unit

3.2 GHz Cell processor: one PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" and seven active 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). The PPE has a 512 KB L2 cache and one VMX (AltiVec) vector unit. Each of the SPEs is a RISC processor with 128 128-bit SIMD GPRs and superscalar functions. Each SPE has 256 KB of L1 cache/software-addressable 4.8 GHz SRAM, called the "Local Store".

Only seven of eight SPEs are active to improve yield. If one of the eight has a manufacturing defect, it is disabled without rendering the entire unit defective or affecting performance. If more than one of eight is defective, the Cell may be used in IBM BladeCenters for other applications. The current version of the PlayStation's operating system requires dedicated use of one of the seven active SPEs, leaving six SPEs directly available to applications.

E3 2005 showcased Sony's "boomerang" design, which was abandoned after poor public reaction and replaced with an upgraded wireless version of the DualShock 2 at E3 2006. The new controller features finer analogue sensitivity[48], more trigger-like R2 and L2 buttons, Home button like the PSP and Xbox 360, and a USB mini-B port for charging the internal battery and use for wired play. There are four numbered LED indicators, to identify and distinguish multiple wireless controllers. The major feature revealed was the ability to sense both rotational orientation and translational acceleration,[48] similar to the previously announced capabilities of the Nintendo Wii controller. Games that use this feature will come with an option to turn it off. Sony has stated that because of these sensors, the rumble feature of the previous controllers has been removed, reasoning that the vibration interferes with motion-sensing.[48] Haptics developer Immersion Corporation (who successfully sued Sony)[49] expressed skepticism of Sony's rationale,[50] and has since introduced tilt and motion-sensing which filters out vibration in software.

Other information
Sony revealed PS3 would use heat pipes and claims the system will be as quiet as a slim PS2[7] ~29dB (A). The PlayStation 3 is approximately 5 kg (11 lbs), 9.8 cm à 32.5 cm à 27.4 cm (3.9 in. à 12.8 in. à 10.8 in.)

How do I hook up my DVD player to my HDTV?

Mary Elise

I have a samsung flat-screen HDTV and a comcast cable box. I am trying to hook up my toshiba DVD player to the cable box. I plugged the DVD player into the outlet in the back of the cable box. I pressed the TV/VCR button on my cable remote and the screen goes blue.Tell me if i need to put anymore info.

Answer
Ok from what I'm following you with you have an HDTV and a comcast box and a DVD player. It really depends on how you're connecting your comcast box to the television and what types of connections you have available on your HDTV. Your comcast box can go into HDMI slot 1 and your DVD player can go into HDMI slot 2 if it is available. Otherwise your DVD player can plug into the back of the television using component cables, (red, blue, green) cables. It sounds like you have power going to the DVD player, but no signal coming out of it to go into the actual televison. Power lines and signal lines are completely different.

Do I need an upscaling DVD player with my new HDTV?

g c

Hello. I Just got a Panasonic TH-42PX60U. I have an older Panasonic DVD-S35 DVD player (progressive scan). I'm about to go out and buy component cables (not S-video cable which is the only other plug in the back of the dvd player).

Should I buy the component cables or just go buy a new upscaling DVD player?

Thanks from a true newbie.

Answer
Just use the DVD player you have for now. Component cables will get you great picture quality and you will be able to take advantage of the progressive scan capabilities of your DVD player with these as well. Make sure you enable this option on your DVD player. It will either be in the on screen setup menu or as a switch on the unit itself.

You're TV has a built in upscaler that will automatically scale the 480p resolution sent out by your DVD player to the native resolution of the display. The reason why upconverting DVD players exist is just because they have chips that try to do it better than the built in upscalers. Some DVD players excel at this and some do it no better or even worse than the TV.

Will it make a difference if you had a very good quality upconverting DVD player such as an OPPO? Yes it would make a difference. Is it worth dumping a perfectly good DVD player and buying a $200+ one? No. The difference in picture quality will be minimal and mainly discernable in text. Most people will not be able to tell the difference watching the actual movie from normal viewing distances.

Also, when you go buy component cables, DO NOT let them sucker you into Monster or other expensive cables that will claim to increase your picture quality. Either get a generic phillips or something brand for fairly cheap or buy them from www.monoprice.com. Try not to spend over $20 for a 6 foot cable.

Enjoy your television. It is an excellent plasma.

P.S. turn the video settings off "Vivid" and to "standard". Vivid will oversaturate some colors and make things look unnatural.

My dvd player on my pc will play video?

BarbBranha

but when I try to copy anything it says no disk in drive. Ive run checks says all is ok. Changed brand of dvd still didnt work. Updated drivers still nothing. Any ideas whats next?

Answer
Hi, copy/burn anything to dvd disk, first you must have a right dvd burner drive(hardware device) on your pc, most dvd burner drives have a text "DVD RW" sign on drive panel, you can't use a dvd-rom drive to burn/copy dvd, so first you need to check your pc to validate there is a right dvd burner drive, if you have a right dvd burner drive on your pc, but still have this problem, I think you should clean the pc dvd burner drive lens, then try again, if still failed again, maybe your pc dvd burner drive was broken, you can use another dvd burner drive to have a try, or maybe there's a compatibility problem between this dvd burner drive and your dvd burner program, you can follow me to use RZ Free DVD Burner to test your dvd burner drive, it's free and easy to use, it can directly burn any files or folders to any dvd disk(DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), and it provides two burn engine to improve compatibility, you can press "Option" button on software main interface to change Burner Engine, so I think maybe it can help you to solve this compatibility problem, you can yahoo or google search and download RZ Free DVD Burner, hope it can help you.

Why does my burnt dvd work on the pc but not in a dvd player?

Q.

Answer
The format you put on the DVD is not recognized by your DVD player for your T.V. Use the following below.

Here are the tools I use to copy DVDS for my own personal back ups. I know some folks do not trust some sites due to all the junk spyware out there and virus stuff. But look at my answer history, you will see that I can be trusted. D/load the free protection I recomend. I trust the programs I mention below and use them. I also believe in try before you buy.

Answer
Yes, this is windows dvd maker video resize problem, windows dvd maker have problem when make 16:9 full screen video dvd, I had met the same problem when use windows dvd maker, this is video resize problem, and on my computer, many videos even can't be imported into wdm, I think windows7 dvd maker is unreliable, one of my friends told me to use the RZ DVD Creator to burn widescreen video DVDs well, now iam using it, works well, it can resize any videos well, it supports 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 normal screen, and provides several video resize modes, such as stretch to fit full screen or keep aspect ratio to fit full screen, with it you just need to select "16:9" and "stretch", then will make a good 16:9 full screen video DVD from your movies, and it can convert any formats movies to video DVD and burn to any DVD disc(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), the burned video DVD can be played well on DVD player, provide the faster speed, more functions, and better quality. You can yahoo or google search RZ DVD Creator and download it, easy to use, hope it can help you too.

dvd player and win 7?

kenneth h

My dvd player was working fine on my pc with win XP. I just installed window 7 and the cd/dvd stopped working. I have a HP dvd1260. Any ideas? Is this normal? What should I do to make it work ? Thanks

Answer
First, reboot the computer and see if your drive comes back.
Next, right click Computer, select Properties and click Device Manager on the upper left side.
Make sure your DVD is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM section of Device Manager. If it isn't it may have gone bad coincidentally.
If ther's a yellow dot with a bang mark in it on your drive, right click it, delete it, and restart windows, hoping that the driver will be re-installed correctly.
Good luck.

PowerPoint 2007 slideshow playable through DVD player?

easy shmea

I created a slideshow using PowerPoint 2007. How do I burn it onto a disk so that it can play on a DVD player? What kind of CD do you need? CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, or DVD+R. Is it true that some DVD players won't play disks that have been burnt?

Answer
You can convert a PowerPoint presentation to either video or DVD with Moyea PPT to DVD Burner. It can preserve everything from your original PowerPoint to the output video or DVD, including animations, sounds and etc.

The download site: http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/
There are 3 editions in the PowerPoint to DVD and video converter Family:
the Pro, http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/ppt_to_dvd/
ï¼Just $19.95 if you purchase on December 23 and 24, 2010 at http://www.moyeamedia.com/software-giveaway/ï¼
the Lite, http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/powerpoint-to-dvd/
and the Edu, http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/ppt-to-dvd-education/
Choose the one that fits to you.

Then follow the how-to for converting to DVD:
1. Install and run Moyea PPT to DVD Burner. Insert a blank DVD to your PC.
2. Import your PowerPoint file and select the output as Standard DVD or High Definition DVD.
3. Customize details for the output DVD slideshow, like adding logos, sound tracks, and DVD menus for playback on TV. Then click Start to burn the presentation to DVD.

That's it! After conversion, you can take out the DVD and playback on a DVD player attached to TV, needless of a projector!

To convert the presentation to video, change the output option as "Convert to Video".

Hope it can help!

Windows Media to DVD ?

No1Potterf

i've made a family video to show my whole family on christmas, but i can't seem to get it on to DVD. it was originally on windows movie maker but i've put it onto windows media 2010, How do i put it on a dvd from there?

Answer
What is "Windows Media 2010"? I googled it and got zero, zip, zed, nada.... I've never heard of it, never seen it anywhere before. If you could explain what you did with the Movie Maker project ...please.

I had a thought... Do you mean you added your video to the Library of Windows Media Player?

If you want to play your video in a DVD player on Christmas day, it needs to be "authored", to be specially formated for DVD player play. You use Windows DVD Maker to do this. You can pick out a menu for it (or not, if you don't want a menu). Windows Media Player will only burn audio CDs and Data disks. Some newer DVD players will play data disks but most older players won't play them. With a data disk you put the disk in the player, the folder or file appears on the screen and you "click" on it to play it.

Luckily, your video is only linked in Windows Media Player so it's still saved where you saved it to on your computer. First, find the location of your video. It could be on your Desktop or in the Videos folder. If "Videos" isn't showing in the Start menu (the box that appears after you click the Start button), click Start and then click your name. All the folders in Users>Owner will appear. Find the Videos folder and double click it to open it. Look for your video.

Next, click the Start button and All Programs. Scroll to Windows DVD Maker and click it to open it. It works by a wizard so it's really easy to use. You'll add your videos and any pictures you want in your DVD, then select a menu style (if you want a menu) and type the title information on the menu. Then you'll burn the DVD.

Question: Did you "Save Movie" in Movie Maker? If your Movie Maker project is still a project file and hasn't been turned into a movie yet, it can't be shown anywhere but on your own computer.
