What is the Best Dual Screen Car DVD portable player out?

Catharine

I am going on a very long trip and need a DVD player for the drive. I need it to have 2 screens: the base one to have up next to me to change out the movies and the other to hang off the back of the headrest. I will have to put both of them on the headrests on the return trip, though. I would like the base one to swivel flat against itself and not have to lay open to have little feet kick it. Any ideas would be great!

Answer
When you've got two kids screaming and kicking in the back seat of the car trying to share a single portable DVD player, you might as well not have one at all. Enter Axion's new AXN-6079 dual 7-inch screen portable DVD player, capable of accepting a video-in for in-car gameplay, or good for just splitting the screen two ways for your little brats darlings who haven't yet learned to play nice and share. We're pretty sure, however, these things aren't wireless, so if you're cable-phobic, be forewarned before plunking down your $230 when they're available at some point this month.

Is my dual indash dvd player ebrake wire positive or negative? I need to bypass it?

Scott L

Answer
In my personal experience, Dual isn't worth the money you pay for it. Very rarely if ever can you find product support, as well as most Dual products do not last very long.

Also, I strongly advise bypassing the safety switch but if you decide you want to heres how.

Option 1: Depending on whether or not the system will let you do this, simply ground the wire.

Option 2: If it is slightly more complicated like the alpine indash dvd's you can install a switch, simply attach the ebrake wire from the radio to one side of the switch, and ground the other side.

HD Player or DVD Player with 1080p Upscaling?

David

So i just got my 1080p Samsung 40''. Now i need a good DVD player. what should i go for? i mainly watch DVD, don't know if i am going to get HD DVDs, since they are still pricey. Now Let me get to my main point. Which one should i get? HD Player or DVD player with Upscaling? I mean does HD player upscale you to 1080p when watching regular DVDs? i am looking at the OPP DVD player, and it got pretty nice rating.

Answer
Every single credible recent review pegs 1080p upscaling as having less quality than bluray/hddvd. But only slightly less and hardly noticeable (if at all). I have not seen a single recommendation of wasting the money on a hd format player unless you are an elitist.

Best 'DVD Player' with 'HDMI' and 'Upscaling' capabilities?

James Math

I'm looking for a DVD Player with hdmi and upscaling capabilities. What is the best one that has these features and a few extras like multiregion, usb etc.

Can anyone help me?

Answer
The best upscaling DVD players today are Blu-ray players. There is little future in buying a DVD player since Blu-ray is superior to DVD and no longer significantly more expensive. Unless you don't have an HDTV consider a Blu-ray player.

The best upscaling DVD players -- those made by OPPO are no longer available new (They now make the best Blu-ray player ... the the BDP-83). If I wanted a DVD player I'd look for a used OPPO DV-981HD. It's also a great SACD and DVD-A player.

Note that upscaling quality varies with the video chip used ... and generally DVD players under about $80-$100 won't do a great job. Hence my advice to consider a Blu-ray player. With prices in the $150 range you get a good DVD upscaler, that will also play Blu-ray and "future-proof" you. To be honest, the best DVD upscaling is offered by the upper tier of Blu-ray players (those costing $200 or more), but for most users the extra quality won't be noticed.

How can I burn home video onto dvd disk using windows 8?

Northernli

I recently got windows 8. I have downloaded all my videos into my computer, but when I open them using media player or movie maker, I cant see them. They are audible, and I still cant see a place to burn them. It was so easy on vista! FRUSTRATED!! Thankyou in advance

Answer
To be honest Windows 8 is rubbish. Windows 9 will be out in April 2015. I've aways used Ubuntu 12.04 rather than windows.

You can download a video converter witch is called Any Video Converter" You'd need to convert your video to the correct file format in order to burn it to a DVD and play it on your DVD player. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on windows 8 but making sure your video file is the correct format is important.

New Ubuntu 12.04 user needing help. Easy questions for easy 10 points?

Bro

I've always used Windows as far back as Windows 95 to Windows 7, so I'm haveing problems getting used to Ubuntu 12.04. The reason I'm trying to use Ubuntu is because it's free, looks good on a resume, and I recently bought a netbook with it installed. Please forgive my stupid questions.

Questions:
Do I need to install virus and spyware protection? If not for me, then possibly for other people who use Windows? If so, do you have any free or low cost suggestions?

How do I add icons to the desktop? I've tried dragging them from the taskbar(?) from the right of the screen, but that didn't work.

I installed Wine and Google Chrome(ubuntu version), but is there anything else I should consider installing? Cool programs, helpful tools, ect...

I was considering reformating my hard drive and installing Linux Mint because it looks like it has a Windows 7 feel, but should I? If so, why or why not?
@ John

That link has been shortened more than once, so I'm going to avoid it. One good thing about being a Windows user for the past 23 some odd years is I know to stay away from potential threats.
@ John again. I did further research on the link you posted and looks like it's malicious. Reported

Answer
<<Do I need to install virus and spyware protection?>>
No, you don't really need to install one, unless you plan to be installing software from an unreliable source.

<<If not for me, then possibly for other people who use Windows?>>
This is a good idea. Most use an AV on Linux for their Windows friends.

<<If so, do you have any free or low cost suggestions?>>
There is Avira or ClamAV (With the ClamTK Frontend) (both free)

<<How do I add icons to the desktop? I've tried dragging them from the taskbar(?) from the right of the screen, but that didn't work.>>
You will most likely need to use something other than Unity DE, try KDE, Cinnamon DE, XFCE, &c.

For Cinnamon follow these instructions, http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/04/26/install-the-latest-and-greatest-cinnamon-desktop-on-ubuntu-12-04/

<<I installed Wine and Google Chrome(ubuntu version), but is there anything else I should consider installing? Cool programs, helpful tools, ect...>>
That really depends on what you want to do, Here are some interesting programs:

Avidemux (Video Editing)
PiTiVi (linear Video Editing)
Blender (3D Animation)
FontForge (Font Software)
gImageReader (OCR software)
SpiderOak (Cloud Server)
LÃVE (2D game engine)
Qalculate! (Powerful Calculator)
Clementine (music Player)
Pidgin (Chat Software)
Xine (In my opinion, one of the best multimedia programs on Linux)

Ubuntu Tweak & Ailurus (Helps with tweaking Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives)

<<I was considering reformating my hard drive and installing Linux Mint because it looks like it has a Windows 7 feel, but should I? If so, why or why not?>>

I personally like Linux Mint over Ubuntu and many other distros, why don't you give it a test run first by burning the ISO to a CD/DVD or USB Thumb drive and running the liveCD. I think that you may like Linux Mint better as well. (Same Software that runs on Ubuntu will run on Linux Mint)

Should I buy a portable DVD player or laptop to entertain my kids for vacation travel?

Mommymushb

I would like something that plays DVDs, but not sure if it's worth it to instead purchase a laptop with DVD playing capability. That way we can use it for the internet, and games as well.

Answer
I would suggest the laptop because you can do a lot with it. It will cost way more than just a portable DVD player. Also, keep in mind that portable DVD players will run much longer oin a charge. Most laptops won't even play a full DVD before dying on battery power.

If you are looking to go cheap and keeps the kids quiet, get a portable DVD player. A headphone splitter will allow them both to listen and you don't have too. Also, there is very little support or troubleshooting needed when using a basic device like this.

If you have money to burn, get a laptop for em, but it will never run tat long on one battery while spinning the DVD, lighting the screen, running the processor, etc... You will also be opening up a can of worms as far as protecting your children from the internet..

I'm going on a Carnival cruise on May. They told me that there is no DVD player in the rooms. But, do you know if it is possible to connect one to the room TV. I have an ultra compact DVD and I would like to use it thre. Why? Because I'm traveling with small kids. Do you know if there are connections on the TVs for that? Thanks

Answer

dvd player battery life?

Andreesha

I have an acoustic solutions portable dvd player (dvd 222). The battery is supposed to last around 2 and a half hours but mine usually gives up after about 1 hour. I think it may be because the first time i charged it, i was watching it aswell. Is there any way i can make the it last longer?

Answer
Drain the battery all the way down to where it won't turn on at all, then plug it into the charger and charge it all the way before you do anything on it. If that doesn't help, you might have a bad battery. That's why they tell you to charge all the way before using, it very important.

PS3 as a blu ray player or OppoBDB-83?

alias_47

These have been the highest rating blu ray players, which would you suggest I get. I already have a Wii and an Xbox 360 so getting a PS3 would be pretty nerdy. Give me your opinions and help me choose.
Cheers buds.

Answer
They are really two quite different devices aimed at different target audiences. You need to consider which fits your needs best.

The PS3 has been highly recommended as a Blu-ray player because in the first couple of years of Blu-ray it was the most cost effective option. However, stand alone Blu-ray disk (BD) players have started to change the equation. The Oppo BDP-83 is arguably the best BD player on the market, and certainly the best for the price IF you value video quality of both DVDs and BDs, and the ability to play CDs, SACD, DVD-A etc in one "universal" player.

On the other hand, if you want to play games, as well as CDs, SACDs, DVDs and BDs (at lower quality than the Oppo), and have a basic home media player the PS3 is the choice.

If all you want is to play audio and video disks and get the best sound and video the PS3 is a poor choice. It uses 6X as much electricity as most stand alone players, is a mediocre DVD upscaler (an important consideration for those with DVD collections), has styling that doesn't fit into anyone's HT system and requires a specialized remote (e.g. it's not compatible with most universal remotes). On the positive Sony have supported the PS3 with frequent firmware updates, something not all BD player manufacturers have done (That said Oppo have an excellent track record in this regard too).

On the other hand the Oppo is both more expensive and less flexible, while an excellent universal disk player it is best suited to those who value it's capacity to generate top notch video and audio suitable for audiophiles and videophiles.

Personally, I'd buy the Oppo over a PS3 in a heartbeat ... but I have no interest in games, and if I want a media player I'll buy one. However, the PS3 offers more capability for the $$ so depending on your priorities you must choose.

Hope that helps.

what blue ray dvd players can you use for netflix, for ten points?

Wendy

what blue ray player is the best one for use on netflx hook up to your tv?

Answer
Will you use the Blu-ray player to also watch Blu-ray discs, or are you only interested in streaming Netflix?

The reason I ask is that you can buy a Roku Netflix streaming device for $70. It won't play discs, but it's a cheap way to be able to use the Netflix streaming service.

Now if you will also be watching Blu-ray discs (such as ones mailed to you as part of your Netflix contract), then I would concentrate instead on players that have good reviews in that aspect, and then see what the reviews say about the streaming Netflix service for that player. A buggy player with slow disc loading times would discourage you from wanting to use it as a Blu-ray player.

Keep in mind that your internet connection speed can affect both the quality of your Netflix streaming service and it's picture quality, and the best device out there can't overcome a problem like that.

Here are some top rated Blu-ray players: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-blu-ray-players/ . Click the review link for one in your budget then read if streaming is offered for it and if they tested it. Not all players have built-in Wi-Fi, so keep that in mind if it will be needed.

Netflix also list various types of compatible devices here: http://www.netflix.com/NetflixReadyDevices . Scroll down that page to "Internet Connected Blu-Ray Players".

And here is an old, but interesting review of different types of Netflix devices, that included the Roku: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/do-not-time-netflix-hd-streaming-shootout/ .

can you please tell me some car in-dash dvd players that play while driving?

C R

i dont know anything about car systems or car dvd player ... buying it for a christmas present - just want some generel knowledge on the item and what are some good brands? pioneer? alpine? thanks so much!

Answer
No car dvd players will come from the factory able to play while the car is in motion. There are ways to bypass that safety feature. I am a huge fan of Pioneer in general. I've never had an in dash dvd player but I have had the pioneer headunit i have now for five years and its still going strong. I don't know much about alpine. I think the Kenwood dvd players look cool. They are a bit more expensive though.

Car in dash dvd player. Valor ITS-700W?

ali_vegas_

So i have a Valor ITS-700W in dash DVD player. It doesn't allow me to play movies while I'm driving. I understand it's for safety issues, but I wasn't planning to use it while driving. I want to deactivate the safety screen (it turns blue unless my e-brake is up) because it's the main source that hooks up to my other 3 screens in the back of my car. And since it is a blue screen on the valor, all the other ones are blue screens. I was just wondering if anyone knows what I have to do exactly to deactivate the safety screen?

Answer
The way most e-brake cables work is a simple 5 or 12 volt line. As the e-brake is pulled up, the line gets "hot" and basically lights up a bulb on the dash. (Like a switch)

All you would need to do to deactivate the safety screen is to give the wire that determines whether the e-brake is engaged a constant voltage at all times. This would "trick" the DVD player to think the e-brake is always on.

Check your DVD player manual on which wire it is, and see if you can find the voltage. Then just pick a line that see's voltage when your car is in the "on" position, and tap into that wire. If you need anything else, feel free to message me.

Hope this helps!

ON THE GO DVD PLAYERS FOR TODDLERS?

rican shaw

I HEARD ABOUT VIDEO NOW, BUT IT ONLY PLAYS TV SHOWS. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS ON THE GO FOR TODDLERS! MY SON ALWAYS GETS BORED AND I WOULD LOVE FOR HIM TO BE ENTERTAINED WITH MOVIES!

Answer
Fisher Price makes a Kid-Tough portable DVD player that retails at Walmart for $129.00 which is said to withstand a fairly good beating.

And I know this next part is completely unsolicited and might earn me some displeasure from my fellow posters, however I feel compelled to say it; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your child watches no more than 1-2 hours of quality programming a day. Instead of the DVD player, perhaps purchase some CDs for car rides that you can sing along with or have a small selection of books that are for car rides only. My kids do both and this allows us to interact more in the car and has helped them to learn how to sing their ABC's as well as count to 20 in English, Spanish and German by age 2 1/2. TV in small doses is fine, but we shouldn't rely on it to entertain our children. If they have to be entertained at such a young age by television what will they be like when they are teenagers?

What's a good portable dvd player for school-aged kids?

Q. We're going on some long road trips and think something like this would come in handy. I'm hoping to find one that's made specifically for kids - if there's one out there. If you have one you like, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks!

P.S. Please - no comments on how they don't need to be watching tv in the car (I'm predicting someone will get on a soapbox about this!) We'll be in the car for over 10 hours and want to pop in a video or two along the way. Thanks : )

Answer
my 33 month old son has one from target.com. It is flat and has a little stand on the back.It is made by audiovox. It only has one moving part...it basically opens in half to put the DVD in then the buttons are on the top. It was about $120 when I bought it in march or april. I would go to target.com and put "kids DVD player" in the search engine. He has dropped it and let it outside in the van in hot weather and it works fine still.

PS3 anyone!?

Q. tell me everything you know about this ps3! i want the game kingdom hearts 3 on it! i want to know everything about that game too! if u know anything about those two things tell me at once! plz and thankz

Answer
Here is everything that I know about the PS3 as of date.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 (Japanese: ãã¬ã¤ã¹ãã¼ã·ã§ã³ 3,, PureisutÄshon SurÄ«?, trademarked PLAYSTATION 3,[2] abbreviated PS3) is Sony's seventh generation era video game console, third in the PlayStation series. It is the successor to the PlayStation 2 and will compete against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. The PS3 is scheduled for release on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 worldwide, and will ship in two initial configurations.

Sony officially unveiled the PS3 to the public on May 16, 2005 during an E3 conference. A functional version of the console was not at E3 2005 or the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005, although at both events, demonstrations were held on devkits (e.g. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots) and comparable PC hardware, and video footage based on the predicted PS3 specifications was produced (e.g. Mobile Suit Gundam).[3] It wasn't until E3 2006 that games were shown on actual PlayStation 3 systems. In preparation for launch, Sony has announced that there will be 27 playable PS3 titles on show at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2006 on final hardware.[4]

Thus far, public reception of the console has been mixed with the Sony stock market price declining partially due to worries about the future of the PlayStation brand and its profitability.[5] However, Sony's chief has cited its widespread developer support and advanced "future-proofed" technologies such as Blu-ray and the Cell microprocessor, as ensuring the continued success of the PlayStation platform.[6]

Overview

System configuration

Sony's initial retail strategy for the PlayStation 3 will involve two different configurations that are detailed in a Sony press release.[7] The "premium" version of the PlayStation 3 will come with an internal 60 GB hard drive, Wi-Fi connectivity, HDMI output, and multiple flash memory card readers, and features a brighter cosmetic silver-colored logo and trim. The second and alternate configuration of the console will have a 20 GB internal hard drive but will not feature Wi-Fi, HDMI, or a memory card reader. The hard drive is upgradeable, and memory card and Wi-Fi support can be added through adaptors, but the HDMI support is not upgradeable.[8]

The lack of HDMI output in the 20 GB model (as with the Xbox 360 or player lacking HDCP) could potentially cause problems with restricted output resolution on Blu-ray video. An ICT flag can be set by content producers, which forces non-HDCP video down to a pixel resolution of 960Ã540 (50% greater than DVD-Video at NTSC resolution, and 25% greater than PAL resolution). SCEA president Kaz Hirai stated that it is "too early to speculate at this point" whether movie producers will activate the ICT feature.[9] According to German publisher Spiegel, a behind-the-scenes agreement was made to not enforce the ICT flag on next-generation optical formats until at least 2010, or possibly even 2012.[10]

David Wilson, Head of Public Relations at Sony Computer Entertainment UK, stated that both models will likely be sold in the UK market, but both may not be available at launch.[13] There, Sony has said that the black color is to be the first on sale, followed by the silver and white color in March 2007.[citation needed] Previously, Sony Computer Entertainment UK Marketing Director Ray Maguire had stated that only the 60 GB version would be available at launch.[22]

In Japan, Sony has opted to go with an open pricing scheme for the 60 GB model, allowing retailers to set a price point themselves. Rakuten, one of the biggest Japanese online retailers, has set their price point at ¥71,800, or ¥75,390 with taxes added (about 675 USD).[23]

The PS3 has received mixed reviews for its price. It is significantly higher than its same-generation competition in all world markets.[24] Sony has publicly defended its pricing model, citing the PS3's higher performance and inclusion of a Blu-ray drive, of which stand-alone players cost an average of US$1,000.[9]

Game pricing
There have also been statements by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) President and CEO Kaz Hirai suggesting games may cost somewhere between $60 and $100 USD[25], more than the US$60 standard for higher-priced games.[26] Futureshop, a Canadian electronics store, has priced each game at C$69.99 (~US$62[

Backward compatibility

Sony has stated that the PlayStation 3 will have backward compatibility with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, and that every PS1 and PS2 game that observes its respective system's TRC (Technical Requirements Checklist) will be playable on PS3 at launch.[1]SCE president Ken Kutaragi asked developers to adhere to the TRC to facilitate compatibility with future PlayStations, stating that the company was having some difficulty getting backward compatibility with games that had not followed the TRCs. "Either it's accidental or on purpose; there's actually a lot of games that don't follow the TRC."[28]. It has been reported that initial PS3 units will include the CPU/rasterizer combination chip used in slim PS2 (EE+GS) to achieve backward compatibility.[29]

The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation devices, but there will be an adapter for the memory cards[5] so users can save their PS1/PS2 data on to a virtual memory card in the hard drive. USB devices for PlayStation 2 may be compatible with PlayStation 3. PlayStation 3 can use Memory Sticks to store save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.

Software development
The PlayStation 3, unlike the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 systems[citation needed], is based on open and publicly available application programming interfaces. The PlayStation 3 development kit was recently praised by IGN as having "distinct lack of noise and heat coming from the system". Despite earlier rumours of programming being difficult,[31] IGN reports that they were told that the dev kit "seemed extremely adaptive and easy to program for".[32]

Open standards

COLLADA, an open, XML-based file format for 3D models.[33]
PSGL, a modified version of OpenGL ES 1.0 (OpenGL ES 2.0 compliant except for the use of Cg instead of GLSL), with extensions specifically aimed at the PS3[34]
OpenMAX, a collection of fast, cross-platform tools for general "media acceleration," such as matrix calculations.[citation needed]
OpenVG, for hardware-accelerated 2D vector graphics.[citation needed]
Sublicensed

AGEIA's PhysX SDK, NovodeX.[citation needed]
Epic's Unreal engine 3.0 framework.[citation needed]
Havok's physics and animation engines.[35]
Pixelux's Game Asset Synthesis Technology[citation needed], a toolkit for advanced procedural synthesis and the Digital Molecular Matter engine plug in for Maya and 3d Studio Max
Cg 1.5, Nvidia's C-like shading language.[citation needed]
SpeedTree RT, a programming package produced by Interactive Data Visualization, Inc. that aims to produce high-quality virtual foliage in real time.
Kynogon's Kynapse 4.0 "large scale A.I."[36]
Considered standards

The list of standards they are reported to be considering includes:

IPv6, the next generation of the Internet Protocol. [37]
Sony has selected several technologies and arranged several sublicensing agreements to create an advanced software development kit for developers. In addition, in 2005 Sony purchased SN Systems, a former provider of Microsoft Windows-based development tools for a variety of console platforms; including PlayStation 2, GameCube, PSP and Nintendo DS to create additional GNU development tools. Sony is providing all developers with GNU toolchains[citation needed] where SN Systems will provide customer-oriented wrappers for GNU tools at an additional cost.

Interface and operating system

The PlayStation 3 version of the Cross Media Bar demonstrated at E3 2006 (video) included options for different user profiles, the ability to explore photos, play music and movies from the hard drive, compatibility for a USB Keyboard and Mouse, a full Internet browser and a Friends menu. In a separate demo Sony presented the "Marketplace" where users can buy and download music.

Linux will be pre-installed on the PS3 hard drive. Currently it is unknown if Linux will be the operating system used to run everything, including the Cross Media Bar, or if the system will operate as a dual boot environment, where Linux would be loaded from the Cross Media Bar menu.

Because we have plans for having Linux on board [the PS3], we also recognize Linux programming activities⦠Other than game studios tied to official developer licenses, we'd like to see various individuals participate in content creation for the PS3.
âIzumi Kawanishi on the presence of the Linux in the PS3.

PlayStation Network Platform

In response to Microsoft's successful Xbox Live network, Sony announced a unified online service for the Playstation 3's console at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo; tentatively titled "PlayStation Network Platform". Sony has confirmed that the service will be always connected[39], free and include multiplayer support. However developers are permitted to charge a subscription fee, as is common with MMO games.

PlayStation Network Platform (PNP or PSNP) is the online service to be provided for use with the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console.[1]

It's currently in development by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe with the Sony Online Entertainment. Parts of PNP will incorporate the Central Station (already working in Europe) and a possible integration with Connect.com marketplace.

Services
On March 15, 2006 at the PlayStation Business Briefing, Sony confirmed that they are preparing for an Xbox Live-like online service tentatively named PlayStation Network Platform with free online play and better network adapter sequencing.

The full list of planned services for the PlayStation Network Platform is as follows.[1]

Comparison to Xbox Live
Unlike Xbox Live (a service provided for the Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles, which has proved to be the most successful so far), Sony will offer a PNP "basic" service comparable to the Xbox Live Silver service, except that it will additionally allow users to play games online for free. However, the downloading of extra content is likely to require a fee.

Also, Xbox Live is a more unified service, with a central server and global ranking and lobby system. With PNP, developers can devise their own system and use their own servers to a way beneficial to the game.

Hardware specifications
Unless otherwise noted, the following specifications are based on a press release by Sony at the 2005 E3 Conference,[40] and slides from a Sony presentation at the 2006 Game Developer's Conference.[41]

The floating point performance of the whole system (CPU + GPU) is reported to be 2.18 TFLOPS[40]. PlayStation 3's Cell CPU achieves 218 GFLOPS single precision float and is reported at around 26 GFLOPS double precision.

Central processing unit

3.2 GHz Cell processor: one PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" and seven active 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). The PPE has a 512 KB L2 cache and one VMX (AltiVec) vector unit. Each of the SPEs is a RISC processor with 128 128-bit SIMD GPRs and superscalar functions. Each SPE has 256 KB of L1 cache/software-addressable 4.8 GHz SRAM, called the "Local Store".

Only seven of eight SPEs are active to improve yield. If one of the eight has a manufacturing defect, it is disabled without rendering the entire unit defective or affecting performance. If more than one of eight is defective, the Cell may be used in IBM BladeCenters for other applications. The current version of the PlayStation's operating system requires dedicated use of one of the seven active SPEs, leaving six SPEs directly available to applications.

Graphics processing unit

Based on a downgraded NVIDIA G70 (previously known as NV47) architecture
Clocked at 550 MHz
128-bit DDR memory interface
211.2 GFLOPS programmable (384 FLOPS per clock), 1.8 TFLOPS total

E3 2005 showcased Sony's "boomerang" design, which was abandoned after poor public reaction and replaced with an upgraded wireless version of the DualShock 2 at E3 2006. The new controller features finer analogue sensitivity[48], more trigger-like R2 and L2 buttons, Home button like the PSP and Xbox 360, and a USB mini-B port for charging the internal battery and use for wired play. There are four numbered LED indicators, to identify and distinguish multiple wireless controllers. The major feature revealed was the ability to sense both rotational orientation and translational acceleration,[48] similar to the previously announced capabilities of the Nintendo Wii controller. Games that use this feature will come with an option to turn it off. Sony has stated that because of these sensors, the rumble feature of the previous controllers has been removed, reasoning that the vibration interferes with motion-sensing.[48] Haptics developer Immersion Corporation (who successfully sued Sony)[49] expressed skepticism of Sony's rationale,[50] and has since introduced tilt and motion-sensing which filters out vibration in software.

Other information
Sony revealed PS3 would use heat pipes and claims the system will be as quiet as a slim PS2[7] ~29dB (A). The PlayStation 3 is approximately 5 kg (11 lbs), 9.8 cm à 32.5 cm à 27.4 cm (3.9 in. à 12.8 in. à 10.8 in.)

Can I record from a dvd player to dvd recorder?

missymoome

I mean instead of recording just straight tv.

Answer
Assuming the tape/DVD that you're trying to copy is not copy protected or copyright material, yes you can. It is a very simple process of hooking up the outputs of the player to the inputs of the recorder. I would recommend that you use the SVHS video output (if there is one) and the two red/white audio outputs into their respective inputs. Put your source on to play, put the recorder on record. You may need to locate the "line in" for the recorder to see the video and audio signals you want to record.

I tape my daughters basketball games and burn them to DVD. Sometimes I need to make copies. It is an easy thing.

If you're trying to copy a commercial DVD, such as a movie, you will find this won't work. Thus the term "copy protected." There are methods, using a computer, that will overcome copy protection, but breaking any method of DRM (digital rights management) is illegal.

Good luck!

How to hook-up my DVD recorder/player to my stereo?

Bruce B

I recently upgraded my old Sony DVD recorder to a real nice Panasonic. Unfortunately, there are no open audio outputs to connect to the stereo. (My old Sony had two separate outputs). How can it be connected to the receiver?? Can the output signal be split?? Thanks!!

Answer
The DVD player should have a set of red & white audio ports. You can connect these to your stereo while connecting your choice of video cable(s) to the TV. You will only get audio from the stereo, not your TV.

The player also has multiple sets of outputs and sends its video and audio signals to all of them. So you could, for instance, have a HDMI cable to your HDTV for upscaled video, and an optical audio or digital audio cable to your receiver for surround sound (which is what I did.) Or any combination of cables going any which way to your heart's content.

If you really want stereo audio to both your TV and your receiver, you can just use a Y-cable, available at any Radio Shack. You'll need 1 Y-cable for each RCA audio port.

Does anyone have a dual screen portable dvd player that they like/don't like?

mamakatie

We are looking to buy one for our car and are not sure what is the best kind to get for a reasonable price. We don't want one that is too cheap and that will break in the first year, but we also don't want to sell the family jewels :)

Answer
we have had 2 different types neither have lasted like they should. First we had one that was 2 screens and dvdplayer was on floor and was seperate that one was broke in a little over a year (movies would stop playing cause it claimed it was opened when closed) right now we have the disney set it is just about to be trash also it has lasted less than a year the screen the dvd player goes in can no longer hang on the seat or it says it is open and movie will not play so it has to sit on ground and we have the other screen plugged in both cost around 200$ they are more work if you want it to last forever i woudl suggest you always remove it from your car in hot or cold weather because i thinks thats why they break....honestly i think they are all junk but the ones that are installed in the head rest.....good luck

netflix streaming devices?

TAI

I was wondering if there are any additional devices that can be used to stream netflix to my tv in addition to the ones that are mentioned through the Netflix website?

Answer
Xbox, Roku player, computers, and some tvs and dvd/blu-ray players will allow you to watch netflix on your tv.

Is there a type of mini DVD player that will allow you to get on the internet and watch netflix movies?

mikki

Answer
Dvd player that connects to the internet and plays Netflix streaming movies?

I'm afraid I haven't heard of such a thing either. But there's a good workaround this, you can for example record Netflix streaming movies for later watching on the mini dvd player or some other portable device.

I for one use some Audials software whenever I need to timeshift Netflix streaming movies or anything like that.

It actually works pretty great to record streaming movies from Netflix plus I also get to convert the recorded Netflix videos to whatever format I need for easier watching on any of my devices.

You should also give it a shot, should work good for your problem.

Can DVD player for mac play disk images?

James H

Is there a plugin or fix available to allow the standard DVD player application in mac to play disk images (mounted from .dmg)? It would be helpful and would remove the need to take all my delicate DVD's on long car trips. :)

Answer
DVD Player.app has this functionality by default. I use it all the time to check DVDs I make in DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. I also use it to time-shift rentals.

Once DVD Player is open, choose File < Open DVD Media. Choose the disk from the sidebar. You don't have to go down to the line to select folders or anything.

Alternatively, you can use Front Row to play the DVD as a disk image. First, you must create an alias of the /Volumes directory in your home folder. Because /Volumes is hidden, you can get to it by activating Finder and selecting Go < Go to Folder and typing /Volumes Option + Command + drag the icon on top of the window to create an alias in your home folder.

You can use a bunch of third party video players, namely VLC to watch DVDs stored in that format, but the concept is that it is a virtual disk, so the OS understands what it is, and what to do with it.

PC HD vs HD upscaling DVD player?

Nyx

Hiya,

I have a 8800GTS graphics card (HD) connected to my HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. I also have a HD upscaling DVD player connected using HDMI. Would there be any difference in the playback quality of the DVD? Do I still need the DVD player?

Sound quality is better though the PC.

Answer
It depends. Which one gives the better output picture. Older models of upscaling DVD player tend to give poorer upscaling results than newer models, but this is not always the case. In your eyes, which gives the better picture? Remember that you can upgrade the computers decoding software to get a better picture.

As the PC sound quality is better, unless the output picture is noticeably poorer, I would use the PC for upscaled DVD output, unless you have a need to quickly load and play a DVD (For instance if the PC takes a while to boot up).

Should I buy a DVD player/recorder or a DVD burner for my pc?

jlennon109

ok, I already have Dish network DVR, but it would be possible to transfer from that to a dvd, although I also want to put video camera movies onto dvds, idk if there are player/recorders that have usb ports that work very well

Answer
It really depends on what you would like to do!

If you want to record TV shows permanently to DVD, buy a DVD player / recorder.

But, if you are going to edit your home movies onto DVD's, I would recommend a DVD burner for your PC. There are many programs out there today that allow you to professionally edit your home movies, add titles, create professional looking menus, etc, etc. Very simple and easy to do!

With the standalone player/recorder, you do not get these options, just a cheap little menu.

Also, a dvd burner on your PC is alot more helpful when you want to burn copies of your homemade videos for family members. It can burn up to 24 times, whereas with the standalone, it does it in real time, like a VHS recorder.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Is there any region free player software for me to play on windows 7?

Charlse

When I try to play my DVD, the system always inform me to set a region code, sometimes it still suck to play DVD player software. What about another one

Answer
All the above is good advice - there are other choices too - plus you can get a small free app to do it in windows media player. (Major Geeks may have it)
Try AfterDawn.com, Ask Leo, Gizmo's, or Widows Club for sage advice.

There are also free codec packs which may/may not help you (Klite is biggest, but not the only one)

My windows 7 media player never asks me to set a region code. Sorry, I can't remember how/if I actually tweaked it.

Can you add wifi to portable dvd players?

Allie

Looking to buy a portable dvd player, im wondering if I could buy something which would have the software to use google or apps?

Answer
Not to the player itself. The most you can do is get one of those Android TV or other media boxes, and connect that to the A/V in on the player. You need to arrange power and an input device.

The least is to just get a tablet, using it for anything that is not playing CDs or DVDs.

Is there a WiFi Blu-Ray DVD Player with a AM/FM Tuner?

emsbubble

Looking for an all in one. Can't see to find it. I either find blu-ray with tuner but without WiFi, Or a WiFi blu-ray player but no Tuner. Any Luck finding one with all the above.

Answer
The best two devices i can think of are the Sony Blue-Ray player and Logitech Revue with Google tv, it turns your tv into a smart tv with access to the android market(including radio apps), the web, Netflix and other movie streaming websites + you can stream videos/photos/songs from other devices to tv wirelessly. it pretty much turns your tv into an android device.

Upscaling DVD Player?

skistar42

We are looking to buy a 1080p HDTV and don't want to make the switch to Blu-Ray so we are looking into DVD Upconverters. I have a few Questions. When I look at the product pages for players online, I see "1080p Upscaling DVD player" but when I look at online reviews I see "This DVD player is equipped with progressive scan". So will these DVD players really make regular DVD's look 1080p? I have also heard that TV's can Upscale DVD's to 1080p or whatever their native resolution is. So if they upconvert, what's the point in buying a Upconverting DVD Player?

Here's one I was looking at. could you tell me if it will upconvert a regular DVD to true 1080p?
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP5982-1080p-Upscaling-Player/dp/B000N254LU/ref=pd_sim_e?ie=UTF8&qid=1204232944&sr=1-1

And the TV I was looking. Will this upconvert to 1080p by itself?
http://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-TX-42F430S-1080p-LCD-HDTV/dp/B000NIDJ3E/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1204233275&sr=1-22

Answer
There are "upconverters" and "scalers". The scalers will give you a much better picture than the upconverters. The other the thing to remember is that sometimes the TV has the better "upconverter/scaler" and sometimes the DVD player has the better upconverter/scaler.

If I were you, I'd spend the money on an HDTV with superior upconverting/scaling capabilities and stick with an "average" DVD player. The extra green spent on your TV will make ALL of your video sources look better. And you might reconsider the Blu-ray Disc. You can get a decent player for around $300. The audio alone is worth the price of admission.

DVD player question........?

IDK

OK, so i was just in England and I bought a DVD there to play back home here in Canada. But when i put in the DVD, a message pops up saying it isn't compatible for this device {the player}. Is there certain players over here that can play both kinds of DVD players? The player i have now was really cheap, so if i bought a more expensive one, will it be able to play it?

Thanks!!

Answer
You are having this problem because DVDs and DVD players are usually "region coded" - you can't play a DVD made to play in Europe on a DVD player made to work on USA DVDs, and vice-versa. There are actually 6 worldwide "regions" for DVDs, the full list is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd_regions

But there is a solution: you can buy a region-free DVD player that will play DVDs from any region, here's one for $50: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=210876659&listingid=39816733
Make sure any such player you buy is not only region-free, but also is able to play both PAL and NTSC DVDs (PAL is the video signal format used in Europe).

Iâm thinking to buy DVD player, maybe Pioneer DV 420 vk, any suggestions from past experience?

DVD Player: Pioneer DV 420 worth of buying or throwing?

Answer
For people who are looking and thinking to buy up converting DVD player, this is my personal feedback, experience and opinion in regards to this Pioneer DV 420V-k player.

This player has arrived within 5 days, relatively fast delivery, no problem.

As someone mentioned before that it has voltage capability up to 220 volts, and the one I received fixed only to 110 volts, I got it for Australia and there we have 220 voltage. For those who are buying this player to use outside of U.S. and Canada, you also would need to get step down voltage converter from you 220v to 110v.

You will not fix the problem just by changing power cords, it won't work. The other option is to look for the international version of the same model on the internet. It is able to handle 110v, 220v and 240v but may cost 10 bucks more though. Also, DV 410 model gives chance to swap cables (compare to DV 420) with no problems, just look the back side pictures of the DVD player on the net and compare that picture with your one.

The player is quite big in itself, the company made it look like a Blu ray player but it is only a conventional dvd player with up scaling capabilities. I am sure they could fit it in a much smaller portable box. If you open the cover you realise that there is not much stuff inside, it is almost empty. And the case of this model is identical to DV 610 dvd player. DV 420 is a simplified version of DV 610 and even older model DV 410. DV 420V-(k) does not have outputs for 5.1 speakers and DTS sound. If your TV support DTS output, then connect your DVD player to the receiver via coaxial or HDMI cable to your TV, else you will not get any DTS sound whatsoever!

Remember that, it will give you DTS 5.1 sound only, if you plug it in to your receiver which has got coaxial digital input, and it has got function to output 5.1 DTS on your speakers. If you connect with component cables to your ordinary TV with two speakers, it only gives you stereo sound. But for those who want to get DTS 2-Channel Decoding to TV with two speakers, you can get Pioneer DV 410 model it is an older version but more advanced, it does give you DTS 2-Channel Decoding, but it will cost you a bit more as well.

This time Pioneer decided just to cut down on cost and give exactly the same player as the older version but with less functions, what a genius! Corporations have one purpose to make more money and save on production and licensing costs and get more money from us. So with every new model they introduce every year, they also cut on something and make sure your gadget becomes lighter and thinner.

The other functions on DV 420 such as virtual surround and sound retriever are hopeless and useless. They will not make difference at all; even if there is little improvement, it does not make substantial difference to the sound at all. If you want to hear good music you still would need to play CD quality music. If it is MP3 make sure it has got the highest bit rate, as the provided enhancing sound functions will not bring any benefit at all.

Now in regards to video and region playability!!! As you may feel by now, I would suggest you to buy DV 410. The only difference they made to DV 420 is that they made it possible to rip your CD's to USB that's all, but they cut it down DTS 2-Channel Decoding, which probably cost them around 3 dollars as the license per player. To me if I really want to rip I'll do it on my computer with greater speed and control. In my opinion you do want to get good damn sound out of your TV at the end of the day anyway, especially for those who don't want to spend extra money on additional receiver, speakers or theater sound systems. Just give me my DTS for my damn TV with two speakers and I am happy.

Best way to stream Netflix thru my LG Blue Ray DVD player?

Curious In

I have an LG Blue Ray DVD player capable of streaming my Netflix from the PC. What is the best way to do this? Should I get a wireless router to send the signal to the DVD player? Does it cost more than my actual monthly subscription? Serious answers please...thanks!

Answer
Well, you should get a router regardless. It's the easiest way to share your internet connection between multiple devices. Using a router does not add to your internet fees.

Your LG blu-ray player can stream directly from Netflix - a PC is not required (other than to set up the account.) All Netflix subscriptions include unlimited streaming so if you already have a Netflix account you're all set there.

As for connecting the blu-ray player to the router, if it supports wireless, go ahead and use that. It'll be easier than having to run an ethernet cable from the player to your router.

Keep in mind that streaming movies is like downloading a very large file. If your ISP has monthly limitations on how much data you can download, use of Netflix streaming may cause you to go over. An average 90 minute movie will use between 1 to 3 GB of data.

Help, Can my family watch netflix movies on a dvd player?

Sheila Col

like either a portable dvd player or one you hook up? obviously we could watch on the computer but still i dont see why we couldnt watch it on a dvd player cuz netflix would be sending us DVD's and last time i checked DVD PLAYERS PLAYED DVD'S so yea can some one who has netflix help me? cuz we dont have a tv with blue ray or a game system thats enabled with it either. thank you

Answer
There are two methods to watch Netflix movies.

1. Stream the movie, (which you can't do on a plain old DVD player) or

2. Watch the movie on a DVD Netflix sends you.

The answer should be obvious but if it isn't, you can watch Netflix movies via method #2, but you can't watch movies via method #1.

yes 100%. Its a simple build in plug and play dvd player. In worst case you would have to download the driver from the manufactures site. But thats unlikely as a lot of OSes are now 64 bit.

Techno loser with windows 7 64-bit?

Hannah

Ok so I need this answer in the most simple terms, and include every step I have to do because I've been looking for hours now and can only find things that are too complicated for me!
So I just got windows 7 64-bit and it has windows media player 12. I took all my music off my old computer via usb and put them on this one, wmp will play them, but not put them in the library, it only has the three sample tracks in there. I've tried making it search for the files and dragging and dropping but nothing works. I did this troubleshoot thing that said it was corrupted, but didn't seem to do anything to solve the problem. I'm so fed up and frustrated with this. None of my friends or family are technically minded, and obviously neither am I, I just don't want to have to pay someone to look at something I have just spent hundreds on.
I also tried something to do with cmd and scannow? I dunno. But basically it said I can't do it because I'm not the administrator, even though the control panel says I am.

Answer
Ok first the NORMAL procedure:

within Windows media player 12 look just under the back arrow (top left of the page) for the tab marked "Organize"

Click that tab and in the pup up menu that comes up click "Manage Library"
That will open a second box where you select "music"

Now you'll have a pop up page.

On this page the button labeled "add" (which should have been labeled "browse" but isn't)
Will let you choose other folders that you want WMP12 to monitor for content.

It will take a while to import all the folders just give it some time.

IF that doesn't work, read on:

That being said there are some "known bugs" where every time you open WMP it'll need to re-import all those files every time.... I have 14,000 tracks on my notebook computer and this process generally took about a 45min.... the word "intolerable" is most appropriate here...

There are fixes for the bug, and you can look it up on any search engine

In my case it would refuse to import or recognize my video collection, it would play them,
but not save them. (Music library was just fine)

My "videos", various thing downloaded from You Tube and converted from FLV
(flash video files to mp4 files (iPod video files)
Note WMP12 unlike WMP11 natively plays mp4 files

Which "fix" did I employ?

I used the brute force approach, what I did was to re-install windows to finally
get it to work correctly.

but It must be pointed out that I tend to use a sledge hammer approach, I was fiddling around with a fresh install of windows 7 on a separate Hard drive... that way if I got frustrated, bored, tired, I could always switch back to the old semi-functioning one it takes me about 60 seconds to swap out the HDD on my Dell 1525 notebook.

The annoying thing is that I never had the slightest issue with my desktop even though it's windows installation was literally off the same physical media (DVD installer disc)

The thing was I will not "activate" a windows installation (ANY operating system) until I make
sure it works and has updated to all the service packs.

I wish you luck...

Is there any DVD player in the market that can stream Netflix?

Uppili Vij

I am not looking for a Blu-Ray player and I am not looking for a streaming only Roku. :)

Answer
An Xbox can be a DVD player and can stream Netflix.
Linksys used to have a DVD player/media Extenter combo, but it may be cheaper to buy a DVD player + Roku box.

are there any dvd players that only stream netflix? No other internet capability?

I need a DVD player that only has Netflix. So no Pandora or youtube or any other internet capability.

Answer
You will not find a Blu Ray player with Netflix only (DVD players do not offer net services). Just because you have a service available does not mean that you have to activate it.

Burned DVD, no sound?

Jaz Lewis

Ok, I have Windows 7 on my HP Compaq 8510p. I'm trying to burn a DVD using the Windows DVD Maker program. I've wasted about 4 DVD disks so far trying to burn a movie, the picture is PERFECT, but no sound? The menu sound is working though? Now, I have already have the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack & the DivX Codec Pack along with the DivX Converter. I've already checked my sound settings in the Device Manager and properties. I've tried everything, so what exactly am I doing wrong? I've even tried using the Windows Media Centre program to burn my movie DVD, but still, no sound. I've tried it on our Blu-Ray player, DVD player and also tried playback on my laptop. What steps should I try next?
Also, my movie file is an AVI. format file.

Answer
Windows DVD Maker program requires external codecs, and I never used it.
Why not to try the software I use called "ConvertXtoDVD".
It will convert avi videos to DVD format and burn directly to DVD.
http://www.i-burner.com/convertxtodvd.php
All you need to do, is to drag and drop your videos to the program. Click convert then after it finishes it will burn directly to DVD disc.
