Can iDVD be used to convert .m4v (video) files into DVD player format?

Thank You

We have some videos in .m4v format on iTunes for Macs (not PC) that we would like to convert into a DVD player readable format so that our elderly parents can watch these on a DVD player. Would Apple's iDVD have this capability to do the conversion and if so, is there a website that offers step-by-step instructions?

If iDVD does not have this capability, which software (freeware preferably) can make the conversion?

These videos (large format - 1080p size) were offered as a FREE download for users to watch.

Thanks for your time and help.
Hi Rick,

iTunes is converting the extensions into .m4v (video) and .m4a (audio). I believe this has something to do with DRM issues. Nothing that I've searched online so far for the Mac end provides this conversion. I have found mp4 converters to DVD, but it's different than what I'd like to achieve. Hope you check back to add your thoughts on this.

Searched on various forums without any success. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Thank You Very Much,

Can you even import .m4v movies to iDVD or iMovie? Do you really mean mp4 files? I have iDVD2 and iMovie 3, and it doesn't seem to import mp4 files. You will have to do a search file on some of the download sites, like VersionTracker:

http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

and Mac update:

http://macupdate.com/

They have whole sections on music and video in these places. Best of luck.

DVD video comes through but the Audio is from TV channels.... Even when on DVD input. Help please?

Adam R

I am trying to help my elderly nieghbors with their TV's. I am pretty good at this stuff but this has me stumped. When they go to watch a DVD, on the input 2, the DVD video shows up, but the audio is from the regular Verizon TV channels. The 3 red, white, yellow cables are all in right holes. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Answer
The yellow might be correct but verify the red and white from video 2 go into the DVD player not something else!

What kind of DVD/Blu ray player can I get that uses only coaxial cables? I have a satellite box/older tv.?

missindy67

I bought a new model blu-ray/DVD player but it wouldn't work because my tv is older model and I need coaxial cables instead of HDMI. What kind of player can I get that still has this option?

Answer
You would need to buy a model that was made before January of 2011 there are some available but they are usually expensive compared to newer ones... also some newer blue ray disks will not play in it if you try and do an update to it it may disable the Composite function...or even the whole player....and only HDMI will work if its connected to the Internet it may try and do the update on its own which would also disable the player in fact some blu ray disks simply by placing it in the player and pressing play may disable it....

How do get sound for my car DVD player?

Q. We recently bought a 2005 Chevy Tahoe with a dvd player and it only came with one set of wireless head phones but I have four kids. We are going to take an 8 hour road trip and I'd really like them to all be able to hear the movie. I've tried every radio station a couple times with a movie playing but I couldn't find sound. I'm not sure if I need to do something to the dvd player to get it to work or what. I've checked the owners manual and all literature that came with the car but there is nothing about it. My in-laws even own a Tahoe that's almost the same year, with the same player bur whenever I ask them for help they can't seem to give me an answer.
Can anyone help?

Answer
your car dvd is single din or double din?
Now double din car dvd installed Built-in amplifier on the market
so if your car dvd player not installed a Built-in one, you should hook up a loudspeaker and a subwoofer to the car dvd.

Kids on Airplane..what can I take on the plane to keep them occupied?

natbyrd92

It is our family's first flight. We are going on a 2 hour flight. The ages are 9, 5, and a 2 1/2 year old. My 9 year old has a nintendo ds, can she take that on the flight? I just need some ideas, please help.

Answer
You should definitely bring some electronic devices to keep them occupied.
Things like portable dvd players, etc.
Make sure to bring them snacks that they enjoy, cause the plane may not have the right food.

*One thing that should absolutely make sure you bring is gum. Childrens ears are very sensative to the high altitudes and the plane ride can be very painful for them (I know thid for personal past expereinces). When you first get on the lpane, give each of them a piece of gum, and then another after they eat. This is relieve a lot of tears*

How do I reinstall a DVD player and driver on my computer without having to reinstall windows 7?

Q. The driver that I have for my DVD drive in my computer is starting to make me frustrated. The only thing my computer will do when I try to reinstall the device is it says CD Drive under the 'computer' heading and now I can't even play movies. When I go online to try and find the driver for my dvd player it won't even pull anything up. It's like the driver for my dvd player burner doesn't even exist anymore. What should I do?

Answer
it should be built into windows. try rolling back the drivers. if not, unplug the drive, fire the machine up and let windows configure the machine as needed (figure out the drive is not there anymore (will just take a few seconds). shut it down. plug it in and fire it back up. it should be detect and install the drivers. make sure the bios is set right also. if that fails, you might have to update the drivers, go advanced and check the search removable media, make sure the install disk is in. one of those should work. kinda an odd situation... what happened to the stock drivers?

Can a windows 7 computer replace a PS3 or xbox, Tivo hd, and a blu-ray and dvd player?

TOOTAl2

Answer
not really. windows 7 is able to replace your DVD player and Blu-ray player if you hook it to your television and are willing to go through the widows boot process anytime you want to watch a movie. There are DVR programs you can install that give you DVR functionality but they lack the easy interface of a dedicated TIVO. you can often find PC versions of XBOX games because they are both microsoft products but Playstation keeps a pretty tight riegn on their gaming franchises so even though you can download PS3 emulators (illegally mind you) they will never match up to using the hardware the game was designed for. If you choose to go this rought then you need a PC with Windows 7 or the new windows 8 demo version, a TV tuner card, a blu-ray drive, a PS3 emulator (again illegal), a bluetooth adaptor (for linking your PS3 and XBOX controllers), and DVR software. Your probably looking at $500-$800 depending on brand and you still would have to have a computer that has a strong enough processor and enough memory to run all of this.

which cable should i buy to connect sony dz100 dvd player to JVC LT37FX77 LCD TV?

sumeet_ahu

I need some servious help with my DVD and LCD TV connector as i have not been able to find the right solution :-).

I live in India and I purchased sony dvdz100 DVD player from UK and have been using it with my old TV with RCA scart connector. It was all fine till i purchased a new LCD TV. 3 weeks ago i purchased a 37 Inch LCD TV from JVC (Model no - LT37FX77), now when i connected my DVD player to new tv with RCA cable the video quality is not good. Some one suggested to buy a scart to RGB connector to connect my TV to DVD player.

I really dont know if this will work or not, if yes which cable should i buy. I tried searching for a cable in delhi but noone sells because SCART is not very famous in India.

Is there a possibility that i can purchase from your website and then you can courier it to my Indian address?

else

I know some basics of souldering and wiring, can i make one of my own?
Thanks a lot for responding to my question, Unfortunately i only have one SCART slot in my DVD player. http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2590881111.pdf (Page 14)

Answer
If your dvd player has component (red/green/blue video, red/white audio) outputs then all you need to do is get a component cable with those five cables bundled together and connect it to your new tv.

Then be sure to go into your dvd player's set up menu and set it for wide screen, and any other settings you want to adjust. DVD players need different setting for HD tvs than your old SD tv.

Check the link, I think they ship internationally.

Questions about my tv and buying a dvd player?

sls.spec

I have a new big-screen HDTV that is capable of 1080p, on the way. Sony Bravia KDL-40V4100. My family is old-fashioned and way behind the times in technology. All that we have is a 4-head vcr and a ton of VHS movies. I got a huge discount on this tv through my employer (by the vendor), so I went ahead and got a flat screen 40" tv. It was $600 bucks after taxes. They probably never will get HDTV (at least not right now), but I wanted that option there if they ever do.

I'm planning on buying a combination 4-head vcr/dvd player. I figure that maybe I should just get a combo vcr/dvd burner while I'm at it (it's not much more in price). For one reason...just to save some space later on, I figured that we might want to record from VHS to DVD and ditch the clunky VHS tapes - while keeping the movies. I know that the quality from VHS will still be VHS - even if dubbed onto a DVD, of course. But I have a couple of questions: Can all DVD burners record onto a dvd directly from the tv? I know that many record from VHS to DVD and vice versa, but I've only seen one so far that said you could record directly to DVD from the tv.

Keep in mind that my family doesn't even have cable - they use regular tv reception with rabbit ears. I just wanted to get them a thinner tv that was larger and easier to see. A blu-ray player is definitely not something we'll be getting. So what is my best bet for a dvd player? Will 1080p 'upconversion' dvd players look better on this tv than the typical 480p or whatever it is that regular dvd players play? Or would getting an upconverting dvd player (to 1080p) be a waste of money?

Secondly...what exactly is 'upconverting'? Is it beneficial to have? I'm confused as to how one can see a "1080p" (or 1080i) picture from like a 480 (or whatever it is) picture quality from a regular dvd?

Answer
Upconverting dvd players just take the 480 and do a fill in the lines thing so when the picture is displayed on an HD tv it looks a little better. Any dvd player, when hooked into your new tv will be upconverted by the tv, as all HD tvs upconvert any signal received to their native resolution, in your case 1080p. Some regular dvds, newer ones, look pretty good if your dvd player has component (red/green/blue) cable output, if not, nothing will look good carried over analog cables. So you could get a new dvd player with component output if you don't already have one, but you don't need the upconverting ones as your tv will do that anyway.

Your VCR will look bad. Don't copy to dvds as it's a losing effort.

And when you get your tv, if you are close enuf to transmission towers, run a scan for available digital channels, you will come up with quite a few HD stations without cable. Check the owner's manual for the procedure, but many antenna people get some nice HD that way, for free. Someone else said you'd need a converter box, that is not right, you're getting a digital tv which should continue working without a box in Feb, and there should also be more free HD coming your way. (So maybe you guys may want to get a better antenna as you'll have better reception with a more powerful outdoor? antenna, or even an indoor antenna with power boost.)

My blu ray player will play DVD's but not blu ray movies, Why is that?

Q. It says can not load disc but it will play some blu ray movies but most of them it will not play. I just bought contraband and a few other new blu ray movies and it will not play them. The player is only 6 monthes old, what do I need to do?

Answer
First of all have you ever updated your Blu-Ray player's firmware before from the default that came along. IF NOT go to player's website and look for the firmware to the model of your player. Sometime you need to do that in order to play certain movies, IF there are NO parts problems. When I first got Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skeynet Edition it would not load up to the menu screen and stay at the loading wait on my Pioneer BDP-51FD. So I looked online for info, and that got me to do my very first firmware update, and NOT leave it at the default firmware that came along. This was back in late May or early June of 2010. After I updated the firmware to 1.65 from the company's site. I had never update my Blu-Ray player's firmware since I got it in mid February of 2009.

I had this problem when the remake of True Grit was released back in June of 2011. I got it the second or third day. The first time I put it in my Pioneer BDP-51FD it would not play, after it finished saying closed and went to loading. It would stay at that to a certain point(I would guess it always the same amount of time), and then a message would show up on the HDTV screen and player's little screen saying "Can't Play This Disc" and Unknown Disc. Back then I didn't know what was going on, The first seven time I have try it in the player, it did not play at all, and the same thing happen. Altogether I try the disc in the player 22 times with in a week and three days. It only worked three different times in the player. Then my guess was that either the disc hates my player the player hates the disc or this disc of True Grit out of so many made has problems. I just return it to Costco in the end, but before doing that I did try the disc on my friend's PS3, and it work the first time in there. I also tryed it on my uncle's Sony Blu-Ray player, it also worked the first time in there.

Move forward to mid August 2011 certain Blu-Rays I got way before the release of True Grit(remake) had worked in the my Pioneer player with no problems. The first one I notice with that problem was Casino, I had got that back in early April of last year, and it had always worked. Ever since mid August more and more started not to play on the player, with the same problem as True Grit. What I have notice was when it would not play and with the same messages is that there is no fan like spinning sound, when it does disc loading. I have also sat in front of the Blu-Ray player, with the TV sound turn down to listen and notice no fan like spinning sound. When I first had this problem I had also found two forums with sections devoted to my player. One is a section at http://www.avsforum.com, with 1009 pages, and at http://www.blu-ray.com. As time went on the Blu-Rays that did not play on the Pioneer, that had worked before with no problems are The Magnificent Seven, Cop Out, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Never Say Never Again(sometime works sometime don't), Spy Game, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard With A Vengeance(sometime works sometime don't), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I Have not try all of my Blu-Rays in the player. Sometime new ones I get will not play the first time in the player like Taken, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, X-Men: First Class and The Guns Of Navarone. Sometime there are new one that will still play first time in the player, like Cowboy And Aliens. It just will it still play as time go by say two and half months later.

What the people on the two forums have said was either one of these is the problem

The laser lens is dirty (Use a Blu-ray laser lens cleaner to clen it the kind that come with a brush. IF it more stubborn, open up the player and use Q-tip to clean it.)

The laser lens is starting to die

The drive could be starting to die( one person said the drive for the model I have, have known problem)

They say it has nothing to do with the firmware update, which I did do since I updated mine from 1.65 to 1.71 when there was problems with playing True Grit and then to 1.72 when my older Blu-Rays started not to play that use to with no problem. And still the problem is still there for me.

One thing no one have said was how to tell is the laser lens just dirty and it not starting to die at all. Alos that there are NO parts problem.

When I told my uncle about it, he told me it parts can't be dying at all. It must be like a record player when there a little piece of bread crum on it, it will not play the record in it right way. I have yet to buy a blu-ray laser lens cleaner and try that. I know all those disc will work in another player. Right now 100% no problems with the DVD and CD side of the Blu-Ray player.

The best thing for you is to ask a home theater expert or store a worker that sell this kind of stuff like at Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi or those good mom and pop kinds. Also try the disc at friend and relative's player to see does it work. Last of all look for forums devoted to your player, and post questions

DVD player for my 2011 Jeep Cherokee Limited Edition?

jolin37620

Where can I order DVD players already in the headrest? The Jeep only comes with the one DVD player in the middle and you can not get it with DVD players in headrest. Just a website or anything would help out.

Answer
so these people make the headrests i think your looking for but not for the 2011 yet so i would do one of 2 things in this situation:
http://www.qualitymobilevideo.com/jeep-cherokee-headrest-monitors.aspx
1) go to the dealer and talk to them about how driftnet the 2010 and 2011 head rest are maby they just have slightly different pattern or something(that might work for you
2) go to a custom audio store they are great for stuff like this and could even install a screen in the headrests you have now

Can you convert any file size to a DVD?

Q. I have a big file size on a video and I just want to make sure if I can upload it and burn it right.

Answer
No. That would be like Yao Ming putting on my shoes.
A DVD holds 4.6GB. You have a "big" file. Of course, I know exactly what size that is.... NOT.

Check the size of the file.

Although you can use various video converters to change the file type, and thus reduce the file size, that will cause a noticeable loss of image quality, so a better option would be to split the file into two or more parts and put the parts on different DVDs.

To make a "data DVD" (only works in a computer, and only plays using movie player software, such as QuicvkTime Player), drag the file to the DVD icon, right-click the DVD icon, and choose "Burn".

To make a DVD movie disc (plays in DVD playing software or in a set-top DVD player through your TV), here are the best options:

-- For Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, use Windows DVD Maker, link below.

-- For pre-2011 model Macs, it came with iDVD (which happens to be discontinued now). Use it. iMovie is the app that came with your Mac for editing movies. Then it has an option to Export to iDVD, which has a Help menu, and if that doesn't answer all your questions, use support.apple.com for "iDVD menus" or whatever your question is about.

-- For newer Macs, use DVDStyler. It is a free (not a demo / trial) open-source alternative to iDVD for Intel Macs. It has most of the same options as iDVD, but not as many cool themes.

Burn a DVD with an iMac?

Bobbb

What software do I need? How do I do this in simple steps?

Additional Details
Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 3.06GHz Intel 2010

Answer
Two types of DVD...
1 -- Data storage.
2 -- DVD movie disc for playing in a "set-top player".

For (1)....
-- Insert the blank DVD.
-- Right-click the DVD icon, and choose "Rename." Give it the name you like.
-- Drag stuff to it.
-- Click the burn icon (yellow and black circle).

For (2)....
-- Uses the software that is suitable for your system....
-- If your computer is not 2011 or later model, it came with iDVD. Use it. iMovie is the app that came with your Mac for editing movies. Then it has an option to Export to iDVD, which has a Help menu, and if that doesn't answer all your questions, use support.apple.com for "iDVD menus" or whatever your question is about.
-- If your 2011 or later computer came with no iDVD, use DVDStyler. It is a free (not a demo / trial) open-source alternative to iDVD for Intel Macs. It has most of the same options as iDVD, but not as many cool themes.

@Charles:
Did you miss the word "iMac" in the question? OK, no problem. Did you miss the words "Mac OS X Version 10.6.8"? Well, that's enough from you. Go back to the Windows questions.

Playing Blu-ray Discs on SD DVD players?

Biggie

I know that most Blu-ray Disc players can play SD DVDs, but can normal DVD players play BDs? Is there a special attachment I'd need? Like the opposite of an up-converter...so I guess it would be a "down-converter?"

Answer
Sorry, you can only play a Blu-ray disk in a Blu-ray player (Blu-ray requires a different (blue) laser which allows a "finer" light beam to read denser tracks)

Note that unlike HD DVD players where all have essentially the same features, Blu-ray players vary widely in their capabilites. If you want the most "future proof" look for one marked as Profile 2.0, rather than 1.1 (the difference is the addition of mandatory Internet connectivity to support online extras or firmware updates).

Help buying new DVD player?

Mine just died so i got to replace it. Im looking at either getting an Upconvert, stand alone blu ray or ps3. I know that the stand alone blu ray upconverts dvds also but i want to know if the ps3 does other wise i dont want one. I have a 50" 720p, is it worth even getting blu ray? If anybody knows about the ps3 and upconverting please tell me. Also how did you chose your current setup.

Answer
If you like playing console games and are even considering getting a blu-ray player than getting a PS3 is your answer. Every consumer electronics expert including CNET rates it as the best Blu Ray player on the market. It does an excellent job up converting also.
