I thought I had heard somewhere that there was some sort of upconversion hardware for SD DVD players to output HD. Is there such a device?

Answer
If you mean as a standalone device, then no. However you can buy DVD player that have the capability built-in right now. The market is flooded w/ them, since alot of us have a huge DVD library and some are hesistate to move into HD.

Personally, am went to Blu-ray side and haven't regret since, phasing out my DVD collection eventually.

What other video formats can be played on a standard DVD player, besides the DVD format?

Besides the usual DVD .vob extension standard video file that can be played on DVD players, what other video extensions can be played on a standard DVD player?

Is there another video file extension that can replace the loooong taking and annoying process of converting or burning video files into DVDs in order to be played on DVD players?

Thanks.
This question i posted is meant for those who ACTUALLY know how to answer. Don't waste my time, please. Thank you.

Ok so im gonna buy a home theater system for my room . this one ( http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_018W885740110001P?vName=Computers+%26+Electronics&cName=Audio+%26+Home+Theater )
do i have to use that dvd player or can i use my vhs\dvd player instead?

Also, does anyone know if that is a good deal?

Answer
You will more than likely have to use the one that is built in. Sorry to say but COBY is a cheap SONY knock-off and all-in-one home theater-in-a-box systems might seem like a good cheap deal but in the long run if something ever breaks down on it like lets say the dvd drive goes on it then you have to send the whole thing to get repaired and you're out of a surround system at the same time.

Get a seperate receiver with speakers and that way you will be able to hook up your vhs/dvd player to it along with any other audio/video device you have or will have in the future.

Trust me it will be worth spending an extra 200$ for a durable quality brand like JVC or Panasonic or SONY.....you don't need to get the best of the best if you're looking for something on the cheap side, then you should be able to find something by the brands I mentioned. Maybe not at K-Mart though, might have to go at a best buy or circuit city.

My DVD player has audio but the picture only plays in black and white. What is the deal?

lucblondie

I have a LG Scarlett tv with a Magnavox dvd player. The cables are the red, yellow and white ones. And yes, audio matches with audio and video matches with video. I even went out and bought a new DVD player and the same problem occurs.

I'm looking to buy a gaming system for mostly the purpose of excercise, family, and action games. I don't know anything about any of the systems.

Answer
Those three can be found in the Xbox Kinect. The Kinect lets you have the best experience of exercise.
For exercise, you have "Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012" and "UFC personal trainer".
For family, you have games like: Kinectimals, kinect adventures, kinect sports season 1 and 2, kinect joy ride, wipeout etc.
For action games you have Halo (Halo 4 coming soon), Star wars, Gear of Wars, rise of nightmares.

Review from an Owner of most popular consoles, should help you out on this decision:

http://budurl.com/XBoxPS3Wii

The reasons for getting PS3 over the two other can be:

- Free online
- Blu ray DVD player
- Better for multimedia purposes.
- Best graphics.

While the reasons for getting Wii can be:

- The cheaper price tag
- Best for you if you are a casual gamer
- Family fun is there for sure.

What are all the features for the xbox 360 ( Free and paid)?

The Q&A Ma

Give the price of all paid one and all the possible options

Answer
Free, not too much. Xbox Live is not free, it's paid for. you also don't get wireless internet, only a cord. And that means if you want wireless, you'll have to buy a little network thing worth about $100. It can watch DVD's (I think, not sure)... that's about it...that i know of enough to tell you with certainty... Here's a comparison on why you should buy a PS3 tho... There will also be a $100 price drop, meaning it's the same price as the 360...

For One, the PS3 will last the longest for the next gen consoles that are out now:

Xbox 360 was made in 2005, they've already made a different version of it (Elite) so soon they'll have the next 360, more likely the 720, probably in 2010-2012 that's not very long 1-3 years of play
Wii- was poorly designed in 2006. They'll have to make the Wii 2 sometime soon, probably 2010-2012 as well.
Playstation 3- was made in the same year as the Wii, 2006. Sony designed it though to last for 10 years! Meaning it will still be around and popular in 2016.

The PS3 amazing. It has better reliability, can be turned into a PC and download Windows XP or Vista, or for free download Linux. For everything that it has, it is much cheaper then the Xbox 360, consider the following.
With the PS3, you get:
-A Blue-Ray player, and one of the best ones out so far. It is also considered new technology. If you don't have Blue-Ray players to start out with when buying the PS3, it also has a DVD upconverter, meaning that you can play normal DVD's with better quality picture.
-The PS3 also features PSN( the (P)lay(S)tation (N)etwork). It's free to use, and download demo's such as Warhawk, and Home. Unlike Xbox Live, it doesn't cost $80 for the first year bundle, and $50 for each following year.
-The PS3 has exlusives like no other console, like Resistance 2, LittleBig Planet, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Metal Gear Solid 4 and in the future: inFamous, Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain and Massive Action Game (M.A.G.âin which over 256 players will be able to play on the same map at the same time)
-For the money, you get 80GB of space, and only 60GB on the Xbox 360, USB mini drives can also be used from the 2.0 USB ports in the front of the PS3. It also has an easily removable HDD.
-Built in, superior Wi-Fi
-Web browser, just like a PC's

On the Xbox 360's you get a 1 in 3 failure rate. Even though Microsoft knows of this problem, they don't even think about the red rings of death while shipping it out to unsuspecting customers

So hereâs a quick run-down of what you must buy with the PS3 and 360:

PS3:
Console(there will be a $100 decrease in April 2009) $300
Game $60
Controller $55
Total: $415

Really, if you bought all the things the PS3 offers SEPERATELY, you would be able to buy roughly 3 PS3's with that money (gaming console+computer+SUPERB Blu Ray player)

Xbox 360:
Console $300
Game $60
Controller $60
Xbox Live $80
Wi-Fi $100
Total: $660

As you can see, the PS3 is cheaper by far and plus, The multi-platform games are using about 25% of the PS3's graphical potential. So that means much better graphics in the future when they can get a grip on the PS3's power.

On the other hand, most multiplatform games are using about 98% of the 360âs potential. And they look about the same. At this rate in 1 year, the PS3 will have outshone the 360 graphic wise. Itâs just that the 8-core Cell Broadband Processor is very complex, and takes developers time to get used to. And they are getting the hang of things. The PS3 has a very good reliability rate: only 0.2% failure rate (note the decimal), while Xbox 360's have a 30% failure rate. So, for every 1000 of both consoles produced, 2 PS3's are defective, whilst about 330 Xbox 360's are defective. The numbers speak for themselves. Many game developers have OPENLY stated that in the near future, and right now, they will use the PS3 as a lead-developing platform, and then they will port the games to the 360.

So pretty much, the PS3 wins hands down. It's the best system people have seen yet! The PS3 will also progress in the future, like it's downgraded because it was so good that other people couldn't afford it. So anyways hope I helped!

Ok, so I have an $800 gaming laptop but there's one problem. It doesn't have a disc drive. But I have a couple of dvd players and a blu-ray player lying around the house. I was wondering if I could somehow hook those up to my laptop via a usb cable or something else and use that to play some physical copies of games I have like GTA:SA or Zoo Tycoon. Any help is appreiciated. Also, I am trying this because I want to avoid going out to Best Buy or Walmart and buying a $30+ USB DVD Drive. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: I have a desktop computer that I don't use, is there a way to take the dvd r drive out of it and connect it to a laptop?

Answer
No.

Standalone players cannot be adapted or modified to be used that way.

Even if it was possible, the extra electronic parts needed
would cost far more than $30.

On top of that, you would have to know what parts to use, how to connect them,
and how to write the necessary software to make it all function.

K the first thing you need to do is connect the xbox 360 to female part and then connect the dvd player to the female part. then there should be input or output switch. make sure its on input and that should work. :)

P.S. all depending how old it is but some of the older ones can't use this feature but i do believe this one can. good luck!

Do portable DVD players kill your car battery?

Justin

We have dual screen Phillips portable dvd player and the last few times we have used it, we have noticed that after using it the day before for a couple of hours, we have trouble starting our car. It is plugged into the adapter provided by the mini-van. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution?
The battery is about a week old.

Answer
it is like leaving your parkers on for a few hours, there is a bit of draw off the battery. you could upgrade your battery to a bigger capacity or you could have an accessory battery that only the screens run off, you could rig it up to the charging system with the appropriate items so it will charge itself.

how old is your battery? maybe it is a sign your battery is a little worse for wear.

High definition DVD upconverting DVD player or Laptop?

best dvd upconverting player on Multi Region Code Zone Free Region Free 1080p UpConverting DVD Player ...
best dvd upconverting player image

shahaly

So I have a couple of HD TVs and both of them have the VGA input. Now my question is, is it worth spending money on an "upconverting" dvd player that converts the normal dvds to HD and display them? My computer, when connected to the HDTV, displays in 720p resolution.

So the question is, does the computer do the same job as an upconverting dvd player, or should I invest into one.

Answer
It sounds like your HDTV's are 720P. You didn't say if your HDTV's have any HDMI ports.

I sometimes connect my laptop to the VGA port on my 720P HDTV and watch DVD's that way. My laptop senses the HDTV and will auto switch the resolution to 1280x720.

An upconverting DVD player, which I also have, will convert a 480i (or 480sd) output signal to 720i or 720p signal for output to your HDTV. You can see a difference in the quality of the picture.

I'm going to invest in either a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray dvd player later this year. If you decide to invest in a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray dvd player, check to see if it will also play standard DVD's (via upconverting circuitry). That way, you can still keep your standard dvd's.

Good luck and post your findings/decision here, ok?

Can anyone recommend a good upconverting DVD player?

CommanderQ

I am planning to buy an LCD TV that supports 1080p. Should I buy a upconverting DVD player with 1080i or 1080p support since I heard 1080i is good enough.

Answer
Sure, at least until the industry sorts out all of the

formats. That's what I did. I own the Oppo DV-981HD.

Otherwise, you could consider the LG player that plays

both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Discs if the high price is

not out of the question. A 1080i resolution is plenty

good enough for HDTV sizes of 37" or smaller.

I have a 32" 720p TV, I am not sure what kind of DVD player to get. I have all regular DVDs. Do I get a regular DVD player or an up-converting DVD player.

Answer
I have a 37" 720p lcd. I wanted to get to the bottom of things so i went and bought a upconverting dvd player. I put Iron Man dvd in my old player over component cables and another Iron Man dvd in the upconverting dvd player over hdmi. Of all the scenes I watched and switched back & forth between the 2 players, I saw no difference in quality. So i returned the upconverting player. That's something you could try & see if you see something that I didn't. I don't know & don't care about the technical reasons why they looked the same to me, but I didn't see any reason to keep it.

how much better is hdmi over composite cables?

Mike G

i got my 720p tv that supports up to 1080i(with hdmi and component cables) hooked up to a dvd player/ surround sound (that upconverts standard 480p dvds to 1080i) with composite cables. How much better will the picture look when i hook it up with an hdmi cable?
no, im definitely talking about composite cables. I remember these cables i used came with my nintendo 64 way back in 96

Answer
Composite cable cannot carry a HD signal, so, at best, you're only getting 480i (not even 480p!) from your DVD player.

While your TV will upconvert this anyways, it's always better to feed your TV the best possible signal you can. Standard DVDs are encoded in progressive scan, so by using a composite cable, you're forcing the DVD player to downgrade the video to 480i, and then asking your TV to upconvert that to 1080i. It'll look worse than when you have your HDTV watch a non-HD channel from your cable box.

Even if you were using a normal DVD player that puts out 480p, this would result in a MUCH better picture (more data for the TV to deal with.)

Most upconverting DVD players can process the upconversion better than your TV. As a result, it's always best to have your DVD player output at the native resolution of your TV.

If your TV supports HDMI, there is no reason you shouldn't be using it for your upscaling DVD player. Don't get suckered into buying those $50-100 cables from Best Buy. There are cheaper cables on the internet and smaller electronics stores that are just as good (if not better).

I'm looking to sell some of my things I don't use anymore. Like my portable DVD player, Ipods etc. Is there a site I can go on that I can see what these are worth at the moment? Ebay and places like that are hard to decipher what it's really worth you know?

Answer
Yep, this is a bit of a challenge - because things are only "worth" what someone's willing to pay for it. That's why eBay is usually the best answer - but usually the best way to find things out is to look at completed auctions.

Nothing has any real intrinisic "worth" outside the last price someone else paid for it. Annoying at times, but true.

Valuing things is a science in and of itself; insurance companies talk about "replacement value"; the IRS will talk about a value after depreciation.

With consumer electronics, which depreciate rapidly, the best indicator is the used market - again, meaning eBay or Craigslist.

One interesting alternative, however, if you want a "firm" price (note, that I did not necessarily say a "good" price) is gazelle.com. They'll buy your old stuff at a predetermined rate. (Note, I'm not involved with them, just aware of the site.)

Just remember, with used "stuff", what's junk to one person may be worth a ton to another. Garage sales are a real-life example of this.

It is just aportable DVD player I bought in US and I need a voltage converter so my DVD player will not get damaged when I use in India.
The last time I took a pictureof a waterfall, it took 3 seconds for the picture to get damaged. I need to protect my DVD player from being fried.

Answer
Use a step-down transformer.

It should be rate for at least twice as much current
(or twice as many watts)
as the total load that it will be required to supply.

For a portable DVD player, a 50 or 100 watt transformer
should be more than sufficient, but you may think of
other things you would also want to use,
so you may still have a good reason to buy a larger one.

Considering the cost of these things, the best idea is
to buy the largest transformer you can afford (and carry around).

How do I get my portable DVD player to run off it's battery?

dixonjj13

I bought an Insignia dual screen portable DVD player at Best Buy. I have returned 2 so far because I can't get them to play using battery power. I have called the Insignia help line 3 times with no success. I have tried plugging the unit in for 24+ hrs to charge the battery - both with the unit on and with the unit off. I assume that I should be able to play a movie, and remove the power plug to let the battery take over.....or turn the unit on without having the power cord plug in.....I can't do either. I can't find any switch to engage the battery....can't find any settings in the menus of the DVD player....and can't find any instructions about the battery in the manual. The helpline insists that it has an internal battery and that it should last about 2.5 hrs. I thought I was a smart guy, but I'm feeling very dumb......please help!

Answer
Hello,

I am sorry. I searched and searched and I was unable to find anything that said that there was a battery inside the "dual screen unit". Looking at the website, Insignia has many other portable DVD players. I am thinking that when someone said that they had a battery they were referring to those other units. I even looked through the manual and there was NO mention of a battery, internal or otherwise, except for in the remote control. This may be why you had two other units that wouldn't work off of "battery" power. Insignia only sells one dual screen unit (active and discontinued). Do you recall where you got the information that there was a battery? When the unit was plugged in, did you notice any icon that indicated that a battery was charging (a light, maybe)?? If I get further information maybe I will be able to help you more, I apologize for not being more helpful. (Hey, at least you're not dumb :) ) SMILE and be merry.

Should I buy a 720p dvd player to go with a 720p lcd tv or will my 420p dvd player work?

best dvd player for lcd tv image

james

The quality of the picture is pretty important to me.

Also, I've heard that most lcd tvs can convert a 420p signal to a 720p.
Is this the same thing as buying a 720p dvd player?

Answer
By 720p dvd player I guess you are talking about a blu ray. A blu ray will look much better than a standard dvd disk. HD tvs do convert any signal they receive to their native resolution, but if you send your tv a 480 dvd pic, it will just convert a poor signal to a large screen. A blu ray will send you a full 720 lines of resolution and look much clearer. It can send a 1080p signal, but with a 720p tv, that's all you will see, 720p. Still an excellent pic.

Use HDMI or red/green/blue component cables to connect blu ray to your tv.

No reason not to. The things you cannot put next to a television are speakers and other devices which contain magnets. Magnets will bend the electron beam used to make a picture.

Your MacBook can play video DVDs but it can't play Windows games DVDs. If you have a DVD that is a movie, TV show etc., just insert it. If the DVD player doesn't automatically open, go to the DVD player and open it. Then go to "file" in the menu, and select "open DVD media". If it doesn't work, then something is wrong with the DVD.

I just got the Pioneer AVH3300. It doesn't have internal storage, but it has USB and AUX connections so I just plug my iPod into it. It is touchscreen and plays DVD's. Also, if you have a smartphone you can download a Pandora app to it, and plug in your phone via an AUX cable.

I have an HDTV and looking for a new DVD player. How does the picture quality on a progressive scan DVD player compare with one of the new HDMI DVD players? Will the HDMI produce near-HD quality? Is it worth the extra $100-200 for the player and the special cable?

Thanks!

Answer
Progressive scan refers to the way the image is displayed. The image is non-interlaced providing a sharper image quality and is not directly related to HDMI, HDMI is the video connection.

HDMI is a high definition output provided by some DVD players, especially high end ones. HDMI is an all digital output again that preserves image quality. The competitor to HDMI is DVI which is similar in that, it too outputs an all digital signal.

There are two types of HDMI, type A is backwards compatible with DVI, type B HDMI is designed to support image resolutions higher than 1080p which is where most high definition TVs max out.

Basically what I'm saying is that progressive scan is how the image is displayed and HDMI is the output signal, the two combined together provide the best image quality.

Whether you use DVI or HDMI is of almost no consequence but you will want to pick one or the other (or whichever one is supported on your TV).

Let me try this again, any DVD player equipped with HDMI outputs will support progressive scan and the same goes for a player that has a DVI video connection.

Yes, it is worth the extra cables and player price.

I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard and I download torrent films. I was suggested to get external hard drive but it can only go so far for 500 gb. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the steps by steps to burn them onto the blank dvd disc. I am deaf, and youtubing is out of the question. I have BURN and LiquidCD program already downloaded. Can anyone help me?? Thank you!

You may take a look at this step by step guide, it will teach you how to convert and burn movie to DVD on Mac. I followed it and successfully burned movie to DVD to play on my home DVD player, it's easy to understand, I think it deserves a try.

How do I put videos from my computer onto a VHS tape?

J.V.

I need to put a video from my computer (Mac OS X) onto a Vhs tape.

I've heard of Dazzle video bridge, but I don't know if it can do this, and I've heard of SimpleVideoOut, but when I try to download it, I just get a bunch of codes and on program.

Answer
Your PC/Mac needs to have a video out port. With no video out, there is not much you can do except to get a VGA to video converter.

If your Mac has a DVD burner first burn a DVD, then use a DVD player and a VCR to make a VHS tape.
