travel with 2 kids...?

what kinds of things should i bring to keep my 4 yr old son occupied? it is a 6 hr and 30 min flight so need tips
sally joe: I do that, my pedetrician even recommened it but bendryl only last for 1 1/2-2 hours with my son

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly with my three kids on transatlantics about twice a year.

For such a short flight, you probably don't need to use any drugs. Usually, by the time you get to the airport, check-in, get through security, board your flight (pant! pant!) the kids are so tired they nod off on their own.

I saw it done on my flights. I can't take antihistamines so I can't risk giving it to my kids (family trait so it's genetic, I ended up unconscious in the ER at age 7). Make sure you try it out at home because twice as a Flight Attendant, they made the child wired. These drugs also can make the kid dehydrated. You wont need a full dose and sometimes the drugs make children disoriented and cranky. You don't want that on arrival! If you do the drugs, do them after take-off or immediately after the meal service so that it's well worn off by the time you land.

I was also warned that they can make the child have accidents (since they relax *everything*).

Some parents feel the need to do this because their children are hyperactive or just get overstimulated. Another consideration is naps. Mine, at age 4, had long given those up. I only saw it on really long flights, trans Atlantic or Pacific's.

Please note that it's not necessary to make them drink or suck on anything for take-off and landing. The AAP simply recommends that they be awake not on landing (which is too late) but at the TOP of descent. You'll feel your ears reverse pressurization too and the cabin will be busy with everyone getting ready for landing. Good time to be up, using the restroom for the last time, etc. If either/both fall asleep on the tarmac, as so many children do, please don't unnecessarily wake them up for take-off.

I just found that simple toys worked best. Coloring things, stickers, play dough, pipe cleaners, etc. Make sure to have at least one new toy or book for each. Give them just as you're getting seated and hopefully, these will keep them calm and occupied until you're in the air. You can read to them and mine liked the books with flaps that open.

If you opt for any electronical products, don't give them over until you're in the air, unless you're sure they'll understand that they can't play with them on take-off (tricky one!) Also, make sure they're fully charged and bring the recharger. Be careful with any game chips or cards. They get lost easily. I have a portable DVD player but there are other gizmos that play movies.

Bring snacks and empty sippy cup to fill instead of having them use open glasses. I bring a change of clothes for mine (just a T and shorts) because they still spill.

Please don't stress the sleep issue. No one will complain about a quiet, occupied child. Some parents focus so intently on getting their kids to sleep that when they don't, everyone ends up cranky and frustrated.

On the same vein, please don't mess with their sleep schedules, thinking that getting them overly tired will make them sleep better. It's actually the opposite. Make sure they're well rested to avoid any meltdowns in the airport or at the start of your flight. They need their energy! (and so do you mom so be organized with the packing and don't be up to midnight doing it). You don't need to make my mistake!

For more information, ten years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;
http://flyingwithchildren1.blogspot.com

Flying alone with kids is not my favorite thing to do but if I'm organized and rested, I can handle it. It still beats not going!

How do I convert and burn a video to a DVD so that I can play it in DVD players?

Yahoo User

I would want to burn movies I have in my computer (mostly AVI files) in an empty DVD so that I can watch it in my car's DVD player. What do I have to do so that any DVD player can play the video I burned to the DVD? Do I have to convert the AVI video to some other format first? How do I burn it to the empty DVD afterwards? If possible, I would want a program which can convert/burn without leaving a watermark. Thanks for the help. Sorry if my question is kind of long, I'm not very good with technology.

Answer
Most dvd players only recognize standard video DVD well, so if you want to watch the burned dvd on your car's or home DVD players, you need to use a right software to convert and burn your movies to standard video DVD that can be watched well on dvd players, you can try RZ DVD Creator, it can convert any movies to standard video DVD and burn to any dvd disc (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc.), such as convert and burn any avi files to standard video DVD, easy to use, just run RZ DVD Creator, insert a dvd disc into your computer dvd burner drive, directly drag and drop your avi files into the software, then press "START" button, then you will get a good standard video DVD from your movies, and you can watch the burned standard video dvd on yoru car's and home dvd players well. You can yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, hope it can help you.

How To Burn a VIDEO_TS Folder To DVD For It To Play On DVD Players?

I have a movie on my hard drive, which is a 7gb file. It is contained in a VIDEO_TS folder in several different files of VOB and others. I've burnt it to an 8.5gb DVD and it works on my laptop, but not in my Xbox 360 or other DVD players. How can I do this so it will play in other DVD players, I have plenty of discs and am willing to download software. All help is much appreciated.

Answer
Most dvd players only recognize standard video DVD well which include VOB, IFO and BUP files, and all files be placed in a VIDEO_TS folder, so you can directly burn the VIDEO_TS folder to your DVD disc as a standard video DVD, and you should note once burn complete, your burner software must close the dvd disc, can't use incremental burn mode. There is an easy way can help you, you can try RZ Free DVD Burner, it's free, it can directly burn hard drive video DVD folder(VIDEO_TS) to any DVD disc that can play well on DVD player, easy run rz free dvd burner then select "Burn video" to burn. You can yahoo or google search and download the RZ Free DVD Burner, it's free, easy to use, hope it can help you.

Broken portable dvd player?

stratusphe

I have a couple of broken portable dvd players screens work but player does not.....Any ideas of what i could do with the screens? Can i take them out and use them?

Answer
It depends on the player, but some can have the screen separated and used. If its a dual screen system, the secondary screen is usually rather easy to use on its own.

I have a dual screen portable DVD player I got as-is for fopr the screens, and use the second screen as a poor man's PIP screen with my TV. I managed to get the DVD player working though.

Portable DVD Player?

lil pumpki

So I'm taking a very long car ride with kids and was considering the dual screen dvd player for the car. Then I was thinking I should get a single portable to take with me other places. Any ideas on it? Which would be a better investment. Most singles I've seen are almost as much as the dual screen.

Answer
Opt for what best suites your needs, most cheaper dual screens are somewhat unreliable, I found Panasonic and Samsung models are quite good.
If you go for a laptop, make sure you go for a functional one, ultraslims are out. The best option would be a Toshiba Quosimo or Dell XPS but the prices are hardly justified. A last gen Toshiba Satellite media laptop would be acceptable if the price fits.

Should I buy a portable DVD player or laptop to entertain my kids for vacation travel?

Mommymushb

I would like something that plays DVDs, but not sure if it's worth it to instead purchase a laptop with DVD playing capability. That way we can use it for the internet, and games as well.

Answer
I would suggest the laptop because you can do a lot with it. It will cost way more than just a portable DVD player. Also, keep in mind that portable DVD players will run much longer oin a charge. Most laptops won't even play a full DVD before dying on battery power.

If you are looking to go cheap and keeps the kids quiet, get a portable DVD player. A headphone splitter will allow them both to listen and you don't have too. Also, there is very little support or troubleshooting needed when using a basic device like this.

If you have money to burn, get a laptop for em, but it will never run tat long on one battery while spinning the DVD, lighting the screen, running the processor, etc... You will also be opening up a can of worms as far as protecting your children from the internet..

Problem connecting DVD player to TV/VCR Combo?

SupaJ016

I recently inherited an old Panasonic Omnivision VCR Plus TV/VCR combo. I just plugged it in, set up the channels and stuck in a VHS tape. It works. Intending to set this up in a spare room for guests, I thought it would be nice to connect a DVD player to this as well. The TV only has two jacks on the front though: one video and one audio input. So, I plugged in these cables and connected them to the corresponding video and audio outputs on the DVD player. I get a picture but...no sound. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

Thank you.

Answer
You can convert vhs to a dvd , then play the dvd on DVD Player, here are two methods to convert VHS to DVD.
1. use dvd recorder: not need vcr and software, just record videos from vhs to dvd.
here is a guide: http://www.dvdvideosoftware.org/guide/top-7-dvd-recorder-vhs-vcr-combinations.html

2. use VCR and Software, connecting video cables, installing software, burning DVD's.

Why am I getting Black & White pictures after connecting a DVD player to new LG 47" 3D LED TV?

Arius Dath

Answer
I found some info on your TV and it seems like there is a lot of problems with that model's 3D mode.

Also it seems that LG wants you to only use their LG Blu-Ray players for "best quality and performance."

If you still have the receipt for the TV I would suggest maybe a different manufacture rather then LG.
If you don't I would try using a LG blu-ray player.

After reading a few reviews and user experiences I found the one below most helpful.

Answer
This DVD player has been fixed to region 2. - This means that the DVD player in your laptop is set to region 2 (Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland )

http://www.laserrot.com/info/lrinfo/dvdmap.html

Were you switching regions in order to watch dvd's? You can only do this a number of times before it locks you into one region.

Answer
you can switch to another dvd player program, like VLC player, it is free and able to play all dvd and regular video files
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

you can also rip the dvd to computer in reuglar video formats, thus you can play it in windows media player/quicktime
You can use wondershare dvd ripper platinum, it is able to rip dvds to computer in 1:1. it is also capable to save dvd to computer in regular video format.
Not like some ordinary DVD rippers, wondershare can rip even copyright protected DVDs, so just give it a shot.

I purchased Pioneer DV-410V dvd player to replace a low-end Sony model that I have been using for a year. The Sony DVD player does not have a HDMI port, so I have been relegated to watching my Panasonic LCD TV via component video cable. I narrowed my choice between Pioneer and LG DN898 players. They are the two top rated DVD players according to Consumer Reports. Pioneer, with the score of 86, tops LG player (which gets 82). I saw no reviews for LG DN898 on the Amazon web site; Pioneer (Amazon's second bestselling upconverting DVD player; LG was #7) got 15 mostly positive reviews. So I went for the Pioneer player.

Pioneer DV-410V has a very handsome form factor. There are more controls in the front panel of the player than most other DVD players (even though I probably would not use any of them). Disc tray is very solidly made. The display is easy to read. Pioneer comes with plenty of connection options. Composite A/V, S-video, component video, HDMI, plus coaxial digial audio out. The notable omission is the optical digital output (fortunately I do not need it), which is available in Pioneer's higher-end models. The set up was very easy. Connect the HDMI cable, went through various settings in the Home Menu, and I was ready to watch my first DVD.

The Home Menu is a model of efficiency. It is divided into five major sections: Audio Settings, Video Adjust, Play Mode, Disk Navigator, and Initial Settings. It is very easy to navigate through each section using cursor buttons. I especially like the Video Adjust Menu, which give you control over such settings as Sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Hue, and Chroma Level. This may be redundant with many TVs, but my Panasonic LCD display has minimal picture settings, so some of those settings are still useful.

The picture quality is much better than what I have been used to with the Sony, at least due to using HDMI instead of component video cable. The picture is more lively and rich than what I have been used to. The picture quality difference was most evident when viewing JPEG photo files. They were like viewing them on my computer display, except on very large scale. I gave up watching JPEG files with the Sony because the images were so pixelated and the resolution was so terrible.

Audio was very rich and clear, although this only happened when I disabled surround and other special audio features. Sometimes less is more. Too many special settings actually have opposite effect. The player remembers last five discs, and it resumes the play automatically. When I stop a DVD and then press play there is no delay; on my old Sony there was a considerable delay

So why only four stars. Any man-made product has at least a bit of imperfection, so this DVD player is no exception. My major gripe is that Pioneer is noisy. It is not a problem when I am watching a DVD, but when I first turn on the unit or when I pause or stop the noise level is perceptible. Next, the display in front of the unit is fixed at displaying chapter and elapsed time (for DVDs). I rather have the flexibility to change it to the remaining time, which is more useful to me. I can view the remaining time and other informations by pressing Display button on the remote (and I have to press the button two more times to get rid of the onscreen display), but that's not as convenient as just looking at the unit's display. Time format is in minutes and seconds, so 1 hour 25 minutes will show up as 85:00, instead of 01:25:00 which I am accustomed to viewing. The remote control is not a universal remote, so I cannot control my TV with it. It does not even have volume or mute buttons. This is no problem for me because I use Sony RM-VL600 8-Device Universal Learning Remote, which I would recommend very highly. Lastly, it only comes in black, if anyone cares.

Upscaling DVD Players?

Wazyfasuu

Hi, i am getting a 22" 1080p HDTV for christmas and wanted to know about a DVD upscaler.
Does it really make a difference?
I had this one in mind:

Or this:
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-0365.aspx

Thanks
Not prepared to buy a PS3 though, too dear, when i already have an xbox 360

Answer
I would say no.
I don't honestly see THAT much difference from a blu-ray player, and I have a very nice set up.
Upscaling really only makes things softer, but not higher resolution.
EDIT: Yeah, Ps3 is fantastic for Blu-Ray and DVD upconverting.

Where Can I buy a spare battery for my TruTech PVS12701 Portable DVD Player?

HENRY M

I have a Tru tech Portable DVD player and the battery is starting to wear out ,Cant play more than a hour.I need to get a replacemrnt. Is there a website that I can go to do buy this replacement battery

Answer
I don't know where to find a replacement battery for that portable DVD player. I even tried to find it on google and no luck. If your portable DVD player is under a year old, you might be covered for warranty. If it's older than that and you don't have a warranty extension, then you should just look for a new portable DVD player. They are under $100 now. http://www.walmart.com/search/browse-ng.do?ic=24_0&ref=125875.129742&fromPageCatId=62055&catNavId=62055

charger for portable DVD player?

Patt D

I lost mine and i need it for tomorrow so i cant really order it online.. can i go to bestbuy or something and just buy one?? the thing says DV IN 9V, is there a "universal charger" that i can just buy?? thanks

Answer
It looks like you have a 9V DC DVD player. If you go to Radio Shack, or a similar electronics store, you should have no problems getting a universal power supply. The thing to check is that the power supply you get has the proper polarity and puts out enough amperage. The polarity for the plug is normally shown with a symbol similar to this "- C +" or "+ C -". The opening of the "C" is the polarity of the center pin of the connector. The DVD player probably draws about 2 Amps. It should say on the data plate, something like "2.3A" or "1800 mA". Get a supply that has a rating as high or higher than the rating on the player. If you take the player with you, any decent clerk at an electronics store should be able to help you.

Answer
You can buy any charger but it must have the same current and voltage rating which is very important otherwise ,getting the wrong charger might damage your dvd player or may not work properly. Also be sure that the plug is compatible to the socket of your unit.

Where can I find a case for portable dvd players to use in the car?

Mom of Thr

I don't want one that goes in between the seats as both of my kids have their own dvd play. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry meant to say they both have their own dvd players.

Answer
I don't have an answer specifically to your question - but I did want to mention - a 3lb DVD player, in a 20mph crash is like 60lbs of force crashing into your child's face. There have been many instances of people dying from head injury or internal bleeding due to a free laptop being projectiled into the air.

If you're set on having the DVD players in there, make sure they are installed in a way that they will not move in a crash, and also so they dont' interfere with any of the other passengers safety.

:) Safe travels.
