Can you recommend a good video player to replace Windows media player?

Can you recommend a good video player to replace Windows media player?

Needs to be free, and as good as Media player. Media Player is not playing all of my downloaded files, Iâm running XP and this is for downloaded files, not DVDâs movies.

Answer
I've tried tons of alternatives including all of the ones mentioned here (in the comments area) and i find these are the best, in order of importance, and the reasons why:

1. Gom Player

Why?: It seems these guys decided to look and steal the best of what makes the other players good and incorporate it into a very smart, clean interface. It can play some partial files but can't play some things like Vobs, and Bin files

Download: http://www.gomplayer.com/download.html

2. Vlc Player

Why?: This is the granddaddy that can play ANY video file out there. It's user interface is GAWD-AWFUL (quite possibly the most annoying and developer abused tool when it comes to user interface ever). It is solely because it can play ANY movie file including ANY partially downloaded video file that makes it a very important part of video players. Besides that i have only bad things to say about this program.

Download: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

3. Media Player Classic

Why?: This one was put together by a hacker team who was fed up with Microsoft and their half-arsed work on Windows Media Player and took the v6.0 Media Player and spruced it up BIG TIME. It has a lot of features and can play some partial files well,

Download: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm

For me i use ALL 3 of these ones together since each can do something the other cant. But Gom is the closest to being perfect. For you i recommend you get Gom Player and depending if you are a big p2p downloader i would also recommend u get Vlc Player too (to play partial movie downloads -- this program is incredible at that).

I also recommend you download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack..this will give you all the video codecs that you need to play ANY movies/videos that you come across without concern for cases like video runs but no audio, or vise-versa...

How can you connect a standalone dvd player to your PC and watch movies?

Answer
You can:

A) Install a TV tuner card which will allow you to not only plug in a DVD player or VHS player, it will also allow you to view TV on the PC as long as you plug in either cable or an antenna.

There are many different ones but here is an example:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116007

Or

B) You can use a similar USB device, does pretty much the same thing but uses the USB port and you don't have to open the computer

Like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116034

But why would you want to??? Doesn't your PC have a DVD drive?, if not you can install one or get an external USB one.

Answer
No.

DVD players for home theaters are NOT data devices. Find a friend with a working DVD drive in their computer and bring a USB Flash drive. Have him copy the files to the USB flash drive, then use this on your PC.

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I have a CD-R and the photos play onto the computer fine, but not onto the DVD player connected to my TV. I assume I need a different type of disc to play it onto the TV, like a DVR type disc or something? But does that mean I need a DVD burner? How would I know if I have one on my computer? I have looked on ebay for this movie on dvd and they only have it on vhs all so.I am not sure if they ever made it on dvd. No other place has it either

Answer
all you need is a VHS player/Recorder and a DVD Recorder ( Blu-ray recorders are available)

You connect your VHS outputs to the inputs of the DVD Recorder, then your TV to the DVD recorder

Then you can convert your old home movies from VHS to DVD

A similar set up will also convert the mini-tapes from the old camcorders

It is also possible to also convert some old shop bought VHS tapes
But many of the later VHS tapes have Embedded copy protection, which DVD recorders are programmed to recognised. They will not record

What film were you seeking
Some of the old films are starting to appear in huge boxsets

What is the best way to conenct these audio components?

I just bought an intro home theater system. It includes an LG 32" LCD HDTV with HDMI, a Yamaha HTR-5840 6.1 surround receiver, two Klipsch Synergy F-1 speakers, and a Sony DVP-NS70H DVD/CD player with HDMI.

In order to get the BEST quality out of this combination, how should I connect everything?

I currently have the HDMI from the TV to the DVD directly since the receiver doesn't do HDMI. I then have a coax from the DVD to the receiver, and a fiber from the TV to the receiver.

1. Is this going to give me the best possible sound for what I have right now, or should I reconfigure it a bit?

2. Is fiber or coax better?

3. When I turn on my DVD and receiver to play a CD, I also have to turn on the TV. When I turn on the TV though, it doesn't see the DVD player until I force the menu to choose HDMI as a primary output. Is there any way to make the DVD visible to the TV by default?

Answer
Whenever in doubt, keep things digital for as long as possible by using Digital I/Os. It appears that you are already doing that. If this is the case, then you should be getting the best signal reproduction that your receiver can deliver!

Keeping things digital for as long as possible, decreases the chances of Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) and eliminates the effect of this interference, which in the end, provides you a window of opportunity to maybe not buy the "Highest Quality" interconnect cable. Simply, 1s and 0s are 1s and 0s that all represent amplitude and frequency. Truly, how would you lose any signal, using 1s and 0s to represent that signal? Without signal loss, then the most accurate reproduction of the source material is practically guaranteed (of course, limited by the capabilities of your receiver). Of course signal loss is a product of using metal based conductors (such as with coaxial connections as opposed to the light-based operation of fiber-optic technology), but unless you plan on having your source equipment in one state and your receiver in another, this provides no further complication in having to purchase Monster Cable digital interconnectors,

Another thing, start saving now for a new receiver! Although Yamaha will always be remembered by me as my first receiver manufacturer once I began seeking high-quality equipment, their quality has decreased with their insistence on providing more budget oriented receicers. Although I would unwaiveringly purchase a Yamaha budget over one made by Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Panasonic, there are more capable receivers that are more accurate by other less well known manufacturers such as Denon and Harman/Kardon. Attempt to get a receiver with the highest quality Burr-Brown Digital-to-Analog conversion. High quality DACs are your final chance at getting the best sound quality from your system! Look around the net (visit manufacturers' websites and such) until you find the receiver that melts your heart! Upon finding that "magic-receiver," search online retailers to discover the least expensive manner in which you can obtain it.

Truly, the most important pieces of your sound system come before the loudspeakers! In reality, the best DVD Player with comparable quality digital signal interpretation to maintain signal integrity is most appropriate! Read reviews of source equipment published in Home THeater focused magazines such as "Home Theater Magazine" and "Sound and Vision Magazine" (which was formerly known as "Stereo Review").

You deserve it!

Especially with those Klipsches! The fact that Klipsch generally produces highly efficient loudspeakers, receiver power requirements can be scaled back a little to get a higher quality (build-wise) receiver to bring out the ambience and presence of the Klipsches! Although I do not personally own any Klipsch loudspeakers, I have yet to be let down by any Klipsch based listening session.

With that said about the in-store listening sessions hardly ever being letdowns, I don't see any reasonable explanation as to why you should be let down in your own home.

...

Regarding your other questions, you should really examine your DVD Player's manual to see if you can set HDMI as the default output method, that way, you won't have to "force" it everytime... There's no reason to have any other output as the default since you are using specifically the HDMI interconnection to deliver the digital video information.

Finally, with the question of which digital interconnection is better between coaxial and fiber-optic, remember that the chance of signal loss is far less with fiber-optic connections, because light can travel much farther through a tube than an electrical pulse through a metal conductor. In the end, again, if money is the issue, coaxial connections use the same RCA cable that your analog devices have used over the years.

Using fiber-optic based installation prevents corrosion, for there is no metal connector that can corrode. However, again, be advised that there is no direct quality improvement by using fiber-optic interconnection for your device as opposed to coaxial, for a 1 is a 1--whether it is being transferred over coaxial or fiber-optic cable.

I would say to use the coaxial I/O to save money initially, but look forward to making use of the fiber-optic connection as time moves forward or if you're thinking of permanently installing the receiver in a particular location.

Hope that helps!

Happy listening!

Hello, this question may be vague, but I use to have a DVD Player Software on my computer that I liked. I liked it because it would let you take screen shots and I like collecting images from my favorite shows/movies. I remember this certain software had a construction cone as the icon. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If not, can someone recommended another free DVD playing software? (But it must have the option where I can capture screen shots.)

Answer
I think you are talking about VLC player, its icon is a a orange and white construction cone. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I love this player. As a hint also download the Combined Community Codec Pack, has everything you need in codecs. (the symbol on the page is just for fun don't be alarmed)

How do I remove a dvd player I have in an old tower and install in a new one?

Q. My husband and I bought a new compaq presario(tower only) with xp and already has only a cd-writer in it. It does have an Expansion Bay right below the Cd-Writer so that is why I assume that means we can take our old cd-dvd player out of our old tower and put it in this new one. Our old tower was a NEC but the cd-dvd player didn't orginally come with it...the original Nec tower had a problem and and the new cd rom dvd player was installed by another computer company that we hired to try to fix the tower at that time. We still kept the old tower to see if another family member wanted it for their system but they didn't so does anyone know how I can remove it from the old tower and install it in this new tower?

Answer
This might sound a little crazy.. Undo the screws.. Remove the DVD drive and install it in the new tower. It should be a simple process.

No car dvd players will come from the factory able to play while the car is in motion. There are ways to bypass that safety feature. I am a huge fan of Pioneer in general. I've never had an in dash dvd player but I have had the pioneer headunit i have now for five years and its still going strong. I don't know much about alpine. I think the Kenwood dvd players look cool. They are a bit more expensive though.

How do I bypass the warning on my car dvd player?

michelle t

I bought a 2007 charger and I got my 2 year old son one of them jensen vm9312HD car dvd players and it wont play while the car is in motion. Can anyone help me to figure this out r tell me where to go for help? Thanks a million!

Answer
I had this same problem, if it plays when its parked then it has a little safety feature that involves a wire, maybe pink in color for your headunit that will only allow it to play when parked. Now if you splice it into the red or yellow, I'd choose red since its not constant, it will play movies anytime.

If it won't play them even when parked then it is not hooked up to a wire or its hooked up to ground and therefor should be hooked to a positive wire, red or yellow. If you didn't put it in yourself then you can take it to an audio shop, maybe check in phonebook for someone local.

But the easy way would be to use a bypass code since there is ojne for your hu. I copy these instructions from ecoustics.com

http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/...

The parking brake bypass procedure is as follows:

1: Go into AM/FM mode
2: Hit "setup" on the remote control
3: Enter 543210 on the remote, listening for the beep for each number entered
4: A new menu will appear. Touch the button that has the hammer/screwdriver on it in the upper left-hand part of the screen.
5: Select Brake bypass to "ON" and hit the "X" near the bottom of the screen.
6: Use the unit wisely and above all safely. A ticket is one thing, causing a fatal accident due to negligence is another.

I don't know if it really works but you could try it, if not use the wiring method above.

I am trialling Ubuntu 10.04, using it straight from a "live" disk, without installing it on the hard disk. Is this safe to do, without a firewall or anti-virus? If it is not safe, can I do something to improve security while browsing?
I am using the live disk because I am fed up with Windows, but I don't want to wipe Windows from my PC until I am sure I want to run Linux

Answer
Running Linux from a LiveCD is very safe. In fact I use a Linux Mint 9 LTS LiveCD for tasks such as internet banking when I am out and about

There is much to be said for running from LiveCD/DVD as it runs from the available RAM on a Computer. Performance can be surprisingly good if there is sufficient amount of RAM available (For example 2gb RAM)

The major downside is settings cannot be saved between sessions so it is better to use a Linux distro. that will work out of the box without the need to install things like Flash player and multimedia codecs.

Ubuntu does not lend itself well to this as you need to install the packages mentioned above each time you start a LIVE session

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 11. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

Dont forget the ceiling lights, under counter lights and floor accent lights!!!
I just bought this house and want to re-wire the kitchen correctly

Answer
For a renovation of this sort you need to have a permit as you will be doing the entire kitchen and will need to bring it up to code for your state. I'm in Connecticut, and that would mean the 2005 code, but CT. is one of only 4 states using the 2005 code. Your state will likely be using the 2008 code, or if you are in Mass. it will be the 2011 code. At any rate, you will need a separate circuit for the refrigerator, another TWO GFIC circuits for the counter top devices, another for the dishwasher, a 240v circuit for the stove/oven (if you have that), and *possibly* more for lighting. You mentioned quite a few items that draw considerable power, so depending on how you use them (do you entertain a lot?) you may need yet another circuit. Your best bet is to get a couple of quotes from licensed electrical contractors, and list everything you need just as you did here. Also show them the panel so they can determine if you have room for the circuits they will need and the power they will draw. Quotes are *usually* free, and that will give you the best idea of what you will need. They will be able to actually see what you have now, and with the list of items you intend to use, and how you intend to use them, will be able to give you the right numbers, both for number of circuits and for cost.

How Much Could my Laptop Sell For?

Trying to sell my 2011 Sony Vaio laptop. It is black in color, has windows 7, and runs fast. It comes with a webcam, DVD PLAYER, and burner. I will be including the charger. The only negative is that one of the plastic pieces that is located on the back fell off. It doesn't affect the computer at all because the keyboard and screen are connected by metal. The plastic piece on the other side still there. Also the mouse is slightly worn out, but still functions fine. How much should I sell it for?

Answer
Try to find out more specifics, amount of ram, hard drive space, does it have a graphics card, etc. That will honestly be the best way to determine how much you can get for it. Without know the specifics it's hard to say. Possibly 500-800 dollars?

If the Peso depreciates against the Yen I doubt it will have any effect at all.
People here that can afford to buy name brand appliances are not going to stop buying quality name brands just because the cost goes up. Besides with all the existing stock it would take quite awhile to have any effect on the prices at all.

Answer
Your DVD player does not have the codec [Its a video language - just like people have various languages codecs are languages for video players. An each type of video in encoded in various codecs. Since AVI is a container (equivelent to a person) it can be coded with those various codecs. But DVDs have a strict restrictions on which codec can be read. Its better you convert the AVI to a DVD specific.
There are alot of free DVD convertors available.

How am I supposed to mount a DVD player to a TV mounted to the wall with an extending/rotating arm?

tenente

Arlight, my TV is mounted using a rotating (180 degrees)/extending arm. I have an oddly shaped house, and I've mounted my TV to one of the inside corners so I can see the TV from the kitchen, living room, and dining room. It works really well, but I have no idea how to attach a DVD player with the TV, so it rotates with the TV. Any ideas?

Answer
If it will mount on top of the tv, buy 2 inch velcro with adhesive tape on the bottom and use as much as possible.
The velcro has adhesive on the bottom of each piece and it will stick to the tv and dvd player but you can remove it also.
Just make sure you clean the tv and dvd good before you place the tape

Do I need the cable company to set me up to get wi-fi to stream netflix. I have a tv in one room. I have a computer plugged in another room. What router do I need for a vizio tv, and a sony blue ray dvd player?

Answer
If you do not have a wireless router, simplest is to get a wireless router for your internet connection and connect that with ethernet cable to your computer.

Then you need something to bridge wireless to the other devices. The typical wireless bridge only supports 1 device. Some routers can act as a wireless bridge with special firmware, but one that can natively act as wireless client bridge for 4 wired devices Zyxel P-330W. I have been using one for years to connect my desktop PC, Bluray player, and sometimes old laptop or other computers to a wireless router in my basement. Unfortunately, they seem to have been discontinued so they may be difficult to find. But this is one source that still seems to have them http://www.amazon.com/ZyXEL-P330W-802-11g-Wireless-Router/dp/B000AAQQBC

Another option is powerline networking where you plug one module in where you have internet and the other module where you need neworking, some with up to 4 ports. But you might still need a router where plug your PC and first module.

But things are changing so fast I have not kept up with everything. So web search "wireless bridge" and "powerline network".

are there any dvd players that only stream netflix? No other internet capability?

I need a DVD player that only has Netflix. So no Pandora or youtube or any other internet capability.

Answer
You will not find a Blu Ray player with Netflix only (DVD players do not offer net services). Just because you have a service available does not mean that you have to activate it.

I have never had a DVD player before, but have a hearing problem and would like to be able to use headphones to hear the speech in movies, but still let others in the room hear the dialogue without headphones.

Answer
Most DVD players come with a digital output for surround sound, and a stereo output, usually for connecting to your TV.

So, you can leave the DVD player connected to your surround sound system with the digital connection, and then connect your head phones to the stereo output (it's the red & white ports)

If you need an adapter, go to Radio Shack. They also sell a wireless headset, which would be nice in your situation so you don't have cables dangling all over the room.

If you're already using the red/white audio cables to connect to your TV, you can get a Y-cable connector, again from Radio Shack, and then connect one set to the TV, and one to your headphone.

Radio Shack usually has these little bits and pieces at good prices, but really, any electronics store should have these things too.

What portable dvd players can you plug a xbox 360 into and what leads do you need?

What portable dvd players could play a xbox 360 if it had the right leads?

Answer
The Xbox 360 has it's own DVD player and doesn't accept any plug-in ones except the now defunct HD-DVD drive which connects through USB (where drivers are available for the Xbox 360, for this device).
