Where can I download a DVD decoder for free that is compatible with the windows media player for windows xp?

Caitlyn

I need this plug-in to play my DVDs in my computer but I haven't got any money to buy the ones I've found so far.

Answer
Hi, your best bet is to get vlc media player which is very good with dvd's and even let you adjust the brightness. Vlc plays nearly any audio or video files there is. Your second alternative is to download a codec pack, combined community codec pack is a good one. If you need futher help add some additional details and I will try to help you further.

I trust combined community codec pack below more than k-lite. With "cccp" you can make windows media player play dvd's and be default for files or media player classic home cinema which comes with included. It is very easy to install and setup.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (Official site of vlc media player by videolan. Not the prettiest interface with that big orange cone but this player does wonders for video and audio files. You can even adjust the brightness on dvd's with vlc.)

http://cccp-project.net/ (Official site of combined community codec pack. DO NOT ENABLE or checkmark haali media splitter support for avi files during setup, if you do haali will crash windows movie maker everytime for avi files.) This is a very good pack. It will play dvd's right after installing or you can set up ffdshow to play dvd's through mpeg2 libavcodec and and adjust dvd brightness through ffdshow video config.)

I hope this helps you out. If you need further help add additional details and I will do my best to help you further.

Does Windows XP (SP3) have a DVD-ROM player?

Amber K

I was trying to play a game (the Sims 2 Double Deluxe) and when I inserted it into the computer, nothing happened. I then realized that on the box it says that I need a DVD-ROM player. "My Computer" just says I have a CD-RW player. Is this just because my computer is a little too old?

Answer
XP SP3 is the last sevice pack for an Operating System , operating systems don't decide what hardware is attached? you can install the hardware, make sure the BIOS sees the device then install the drivers and software from the support cd/dvd? All you need to check is the specs required to run the opticla drive and your PC is above those specs?

Next Xbox or PlayStation?

Q. when is the next ine going to come out and should i wait to buy a ps3 or 360 until another one of those consles come out?

Answer
PS3 is supposed to have a 10 year life cycle, but the industry, and everyone is predicting is that we will see the next PS around 2014-2015. The next XBox will come out much sooner, as the XBox 360 is already maxed out in terms of graphics and physics, it will probably be released around 2010-2011. My advice, grab a PS3. I have a 360, PS3, and Wii and the PS3 has become my main platform for gaming. My brother plays the 360 while I play the PS3 and Wii.

EDIT: To counter the post under me, Major Nelson is in charge of XBL and is in charge of PR. He would never say that the next XBox is coming out soon, but here is the evidence:

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/03/13/next-xbox-720-to-launch-in-2011-2012-according-to-microsoft.htm

A Microsoft DEVELOPER said that they are already working on the next XBOX, and here is one more thing:

http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/formats/xbox360/rumour-project-phoenix-xbox-720-and-x-engine-$1306788.htm

Basically, MS ran a couple of job listings a while ago stating that they needed people experienced with gaming hardware in order for their next console codenamed Phoenix. The original idea was for it to be 10 years, but because Blu-Ray beat HD-DVD, the XBox is now behind the PS3 in terms of graphics and what the 360 can do in terms of physics and AI. The hardware is basically the same, but the DVD-9, that the 360 uses has 9 gigs of space, while Blu-Ray discs, what the PS3 uses, has 50 gigs of space. Because of that devs can put more things on the PS3 than the 360. Here is proof:

http://www.totalvideogames.com/GTA-IV/news/Further-GTA-IV-Details-Unearthed-11032.html

Rockstar, the developer behind GTA IV, said that they had to "dumb-down" GTA IV in order for it to be equal on the PS3 and the 360 because of the lack of disk space on the 360. They originally had a much bigger game planned, but when they approached MS about making GTA IV multi-disc, they said no way, thus we got the gimped, but still good, version of GTA IV.

In summary, because the PS3 has a next-gen disc format (Blu-Ray) while the 360 relies on DVD, we will see the next XBox much sooner than anyone thinks.

Yet another EDIT:

The 360 had better exclusives until 2008. The PS3 has fantastic games like Killzone 2, InFamous, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and SOCOM. They have games like Heavy Rain, God Of War III, and MAG (256 player FPS game) coming out in 2009. The 360 has great games like Gears Of War 1 and 2, Halo 3, and Forza 2, but their exclusives list is becoming SHORTER as time goes on. The only thing they have going for them is Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. IMO, MS is relying on Halo WAY to much, and it will bite them in the ass.

In terms of games, the 360 has a bigger library right now, but the PS3 will have a bigger and better library after 2009.

PC HD vs HD upscaling DVD player?

Nyx

Hiya,

I have a 8800GTS graphics card (HD) connected to my HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. I also have a HD upscaling DVD player connected using HDMI. Would there be any difference in the playback quality of the DVD? Do I still need the DVD player?

Sound quality is better though the PC.

Answer
It depends. Which one gives the better output picture. Older models of upscaling DVD player tend to give poorer upscaling results than newer models, but this is not always the case. In your eyes, which gives the better picture? Remember that you can upgrade the computers decoding software to get a better picture.

As the PC sound quality is better, unless the output picture is noticeably poorer, I would use the PC for upscaled DVD output, unless you have a need to quickly load and play a DVD (For instance if the PC takes a while to boot up).

Should I buy a DVD player/recorder or a DVD burner for my pc?

jlennon109

ok, I already have Dish network DVR, but it would be possible to transfer from that to a dvd, although I also want to put video camera movies onto dvds, idk if there are player/recorders that have usb ports that work very well

Answer
It really depends on what you would like to do!

If you want to record TV shows permanently to DVD, buy a DVD player / recorder.

But, if you are going to edit your home movies onto DVD's, I would recommend a DVD burner for your PC. There are many programs out there today that allow you to professionally edit your home movies, add titles, create professional looking menus, etc, etc. Very simple and easy to do!

With the standalone player/recorder, you do not get these options, just a cheap little menu.

Also, a dvd burner on your PC is alot more helpful when you want to burn copies of your homemade videos for family members. It can burn up to 24 times, whereas with the standalone, it does it in real time, like a VHS recorder.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Help with DVD Player/Recorder !!?

D O I N K

I am looking for a DVD device that has two drives so that I can copy DVD's to one another, and also, can hook up to my VCR via a plug that I don't know of, and be able to transfer my VHS's too. Any help with what i'm looking for or a great model exactly would be awesome.

Answer
You will be much better off using a computer for DVD and VHS copying. If you don't have a DVD+R drive, get one. If you're not particularly tech-savy and don't think you can handle installing a new drive in your system - or if you only have a laptop - get an external drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151178

Now, here's the first problem: the Digital Millenium Copyright Act made it illegal to break the encryption of commercial DVDs. That means you cannot buy legal software that will copy a commercial DVD. However, it's generally accepted that it's perfectly legal under free use doctrine to make a backup of media you've purchased. So what I'm presenting here is a way to back up your DVDs and VHS movies without breaking the law.

You need to buy the Video and Audio Capture Device from ADS Tech. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815255011&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Video+Devices+++TV+Tuners-_-ADS+Technologies-_-15255011 The VACD has both an A/V in and an S-video input that you hook up your VCR or DVD player to, and a USB output that you connect to your computer. You then have the option of either ripping video to store as a file on your computer or burning the video straight onto a DVD.

Warning: this will take a long time. You will have to play every movie in its entirety to capture it onto a disc. That means it'll take you about two hours to back up your average movie, and backing up a decent-sized library of movies could take you weeks or months.

This is actually the fastest way to convert VHS to DVD, since you have to convert analog to digital. There are much, much faster ways to copy one DVD onto another (just copy the disc), but again, that breaks the law.

DVD recorder/players?

Gigi

Does anyone have any information on an LG DVD Recorder / Player?

I have enough points to get either a Panasonic DVD Recorder with VCR (no other info is available) or the LG Recordable DVD Player with progressive-scan DivX/4 MPEG4 playback, editing. ( I just copied down the facts from the description, I don't know anything about them. ) I want to transfer a bunch of old VHS tapes while theyâre still in pretty good shape.
Or, should I buy a different one altogether, and use the points for something else?
My TV is a 4-year old 27â Sony Wega.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gigi

Answer
If you'd like to do any editing of your VHS tapes prior to transferring them to DVD, it would be helpful to get a machine with a built in hard drive with editing capabilities. I got a Sylvania V200F for the purpose of converting my old VHS tapes to DVD, and it's great, but I'm not sure it's being produced anymore.

I like it because I can copy a VHS tape to the hard drive, edit out anything I don't want to save, and then go from the hard drive to a DVD.

Good luck!

How to connect dvd player to wireless network?

ricky c

I have a sony dvd player in my living room. The dvd play only has hdmi and ethernet inputs and supports Netflix. I was wondering how to connect the dvd player to the wireless modem i have in the other room. I'm completely lost.

Answer
Your DVD Player doesn't have wireless capabilities, but supports a network connection. You have several options

1. Move your router
2. Move your DVD player
3. Run a long cable to the router
4. Buy yourself one of those wireless devices that'll give you a jack right there at the player
5. Set a laptop near the player & ad hoc the network
6. Wire your entire house with network (be sure to put a jack by the player)
7. Buy a wireless dvd player & sell the one you got
8. Setup an additional router as a repeater & set it next to your player
9. Scrap the idea all together, go get a roku or a ps3 to watch netflix
10. That's bout all I got right now.

WMV File not playing on DVD player.?

gordon

I used Windows Movie Maker to make a little video, i burned it onto a cd and stuck it in my dvd player, and the video didnt play, only the audio did. any suggestions?

Answer
Your dvd player may not support the wmv codec, i usually use either Mpeg-4 or Divx never fails me.
Also very expensive dvd player's are ussualy limited to dvd and vcd only, but a cheap dvd player can play multiple formats including the wmv. I would use a nero program and try and convert it to the format your dvd player supports.

my com cant detect dvd cd player whats wrong?

Fredro

Answer
Well first you need to provide some more info such as what Operating system she is using, Windows, Linux, Mac? what version, XP, Vista, 7, Suse, Ubuntu, Debian, Tiger, Leopard, Etc.. Since most people use windows let me try and give you a hand. So you say she does not detect the CD/DVD Player. Is it just the player that you guys are interested in because there are bunches, such as Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Winamp, etc.. Or is she not detecting the CD/DVD Unit? if that's the case maybe the drivers for the device are not properly installed. If your PC is running windows XP or vista you can hold down the windows key (next to the alt key which is next to the space bar) and tap the button that says Pause/Break (it's on the same line as the F Keys all the way to the right) and then click on Hardware, then click on device manager. Look for any yellow question marks, these tell you that the driver for the device is not installed or is corrupted. What you have to do in this case is find out the manufacturer of the device and the model. You can do that with driver agent. It's free. And you may download the drivers from www.driverguide.com (all you gotta do is sign up as a user which is free) and then you can download the drivers. If you have anymore q's about this topic contact me. dee_snider at yahoo dot com

Are blu dvd players worth buying?

Andrew

Obviously they allow a clearer picture but how better is it? Is it worth paying extra for the dvds and the player?

Answer
Yes Blu ray players do much more than play blu ray disks inm higher quality and DVD's also they connect you to the Internet opening up all kinds of new things like Pandora Internet radio netflix instant downloads and many more sites, a lot has to do with what other equipment you have you have to have high speed internet you will need an N wireless router also a HDTV and a quality surround system to make it all worth it...If your TV is old or the screen is small and your computer speakers are better than your surround sound system and you really don't have a high speed router then it may not be worth the added expense....

Portable DVD player that streams Netflix?

I am looking into buying a great portable DVD player that will let me stream movies from Netflix. I have looked into the Samsung BD-C8000. It seems good, but a bit expensive. Is there any other less expensive brand or model I could buy? What do you think about the Samsung model and other ones?

Answer
You're not going to find Netflix on a portable DVD player. The Samsung Blu-Ray player you mentioned is an excellent choice.

DVD players ???

Ben A

Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Thanks

Answer
Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD.

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.

What video format do most household dvd players read?

Where's my

Not laptop dvd players, but normal household dvd players.

Answer
VOB (mpeg-2) format, that's the dvd format.

most regular or stand-alone dvd players can read it. And you can burn videos format to dvd format with dvd creator (I currently use aimersoft dvd creator), which can automatic burn videos to blank dvds (the supported DVD including DVDâ5, DVDâ9, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL and DVD-RAM)

Pc DVD PLAYER NOT OPENING?

Q. I have a dvd in my PC. It was playing just fine a few minutes ago. Just now it won't open PLEASE HELP! What do I do? Please explain throughly! Thanks! :(
If I click the eject button on the DVD player the light turns green and starts making a noise. Like BBMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Then it turns off again. If I put the pin in nothing happens and if I go to computer and click eject from there it turns on and starts making nois and turns off again.
It's a HP DVD WRITER DVD630

Answer
On the DVD drive itself there should be a little hole, get a pin and poke it in the hole, this should activate the emergency release and your dvd drive drawer should pop open.

If not, go into 'my computer' and right click on the dvd drive, then click 'eject' to see if that works.

EDIT:
Try using the end of s straightened paper clip and applying more pressure, if it doesn't work with the computer on, try turning the computer off and doing it. It should open a little so that you can open it fully to remove the DVD, though when it closes again it may not open again when you try and open the drive the normal way.

If the disk is jammed or broken inside the drive, access may require the removal of the drive's outer case. If this is necessary, it is very likely that the drive will have to be replaced.

At the moment i am out of ideas, i will edit if i can think of another solution to try

My PC DVD player doesn't work...?

TyphoonZX

I have Windows Media player 10, but I cna't play DVDs in my computer...(I think it may have been connected to when I uninstalled Interactual DVD player) If it is, where can I get it again?

Answer
Many times, the DVD software is licensed with the hardware.
If the software is still installed but you removed the DVD player, and installed a different player, the software may not work.
If this is the case, reinstall the older DVD drive along with the newer DVD. If the software detects the old drive hardware in the system, the software should work.
You will have to set the master/slave jumpers properly to get two drives to work on the same cable. One must be set to master, and be at the end of the bus, the other must be set to slave.
If only one drive is in the system, set the jumper to CS cable select. If you get it wrong, the computer may not boot, but will not result in damage.

Help! What is a multi-region dvd player?!?

MandyLee

Okay, so for Christmas I am asking for a Korean movie called "Attack on the Pin-up Boys" starring the Korean boy band, Super Junior.
I'm looking on Ebay to find the best deal and package and stuff but then I see it says things like,
"multi-region dvd player required!"
I don't really understand what that means.
I live in the USA, is there a special kind of dvd player that I need to get for it to work? How do I know it's a multi-region dvd player?
I would appreciate help very much! I don't want to buy the dvd and find out that it won't work on my dvd player.
thanks!
Also -- how do I know if it's a region 1 dvd or multi-region?
will it say it on the box of the dvd player or directly on it?
is it going to say it plain out like, "Region 1 dvd player"
or is it weird coding?

Answer
i have that movie i suggest buying it from yesasia.com since its asia central for k-pop and others and it you want to buy other suju stuff since over $40 is free shipping and over $50 you get a $5 coupon.

you can watch it on your computer if you can't find a multi region dvd player.

north america dvd players are region 1.

since that movie is korean, it's region 3.

japan uses region 2.

on your computer though, you can only change the regions 5 times and the fifth time, whatever region it is, it gets stuck in that region.

you have to get a dvd that can play any region.

if you want to buy a new dvd for the movie, just look up all region dvd player and buy one.

otherwise you can watch it on your computer if you plan on only watching korean dvds on your computer.

Are xbox's multi region dvd players?

Answer
Nope. 360s are region dependent just like most dvd players.

Do I need an upscaling DVD player with my new HDTV?

g c

Hello. I Just got a Panasonic TH-42PX60U. I have an older Panasonic DVD-S35 DVD player (progressive scan). I'm about to go out and buy component cables (not S-video cable which is the only other plug in the back of the dvd player).

Should I buy the component cables or just go buy a new upscaling DVD player?

Thanks from a true newbie.

Answer
Just use the DVD player you have for now. Component cables will get you great picture quality and you will be able to take advantage of the progressive scan capabilities of your DVD player with these as well. Make sure you enable this option on your DVD player. It will either be in the on screen setup menu or as a switch on the unit itself.

You're TV has a built in upscaler that will automatically scale the 480p resolution sent out by your DVD player to the native resolution of the display. The reason why upconverting DVD players exist is just because they have chips that try to do it better than the built in upscalers. Some DVD players excel at this and some do it no better or even worse than the TV.

Will it make a difference if you had a very good quality upconverting DVD player such as an OPPO? Yes it would make a difference. Is it worth dumping a perfectly good DVD player and buying a $200+ one? No. The difference in picture quality will be minimal and mainly discernable in text. Most people will not be able to tell the difference watching the actual movie from normal viewing distances.

Also, when you go buy component cables, DO NOT let them sucker you into Monster or other expensive cables that will claim to increase your picture quality. Either get a generic phillips or something brand for fairly cheap or buy them from www.monoprice.com. Try not to spend over $20 for a 6 foot cable.

Enjoy your television. It is an excellent plasma.

P.S. turn the video settings off "Vivid" and to "standard". Vivid will oversaturate some colors and make things look unnatural.

HDTV and DVD Players?

travis ric

I know this is a stupid question but in not that great at this kind of electronics. Just computers but, do i need a special DVD player to play high def movies, or do i just need HDMI cords for regular players.

Answer
you need an up-scaling dvd player but they don't upconvert to full 1080p only Blu-ray players do. chances are it your player has an hdmi out it is of the upconverting type. your question on the hdmi "cables" is abit confusing since only one is required for HD and it is capable of carring both the audio and vidio signals from your dvd player to your HDTV

My grandfather just had his 80th birthday reunion. The entire family came. I juse received in the mail a DVD which is a slideshow of the whole party. This was obviously done by a professional because at the end it had their credits and their website listed. I know it'd probably be illegal to take their images but I only would want them to keep for myself in my photo library. How on earth can I extract a picture from a DVD video using the DVD player that comes on a mac? It only lets you stop, play, rewind, etc. It's not like a quicktime video clip where I can do that. Is there any way to do it?

Answer
Try this:

1. Open the DVD player.app and insert a DVD. For this to work, the DVD window must be set to "Maximum Size" or below (NOT Fullscreen).

2. Open Terminal.app (Located in Applications â Utilities).

3. Now, type "screencapture -i ~/Desktop/mydvd.png" without quotes and hit enter. You'll notice a crosshair icon appear.
Note: You can replace the "mydvd" part with anything you want.

4. At this point, you've got two options for taking the screenshot. You can (a) use the crosshair icon to select a portion of the screen, or (b) hit space bar to turn the crosshair icon into a camera icon. If you go with option b, you'll be able to select specific windows within your screen real estate. Simply highlight the DVD window and click to capture. A .png image will be saved on your desktop.

If you'd rather use software to take your screenshots, try the following applications:

Replaying DVD discs on a Mac OSX system?

shirese197

Can someone help me? I get the message that I do not have a default program to play DVD discs, but I have viewed DVD discs in the past.

Answer
I just put a DVD into my Macintosh. The app "DVD Player" immediately started playing my DVD. Do you have this app? If so, you may need to tell your Mac to use it as the default player when a DVD is inserted.

Go to System Preferences (in your Dock and in the Apple menu), choose CDs & DVDs and then tell your Mac which program to use to play your DVDs.

Answer
you wont be able to fine a region free dvd player in any local store, but you can buy it online for very low prices. Here is good place where i got mine from, i got it in 3 days, and it was free shipping. And the dvd player works perfectly plays all region, code free, and the quality is great. Here is the one i got.

http://bargainoffers.com/catalog/pioneer-dv400vk-black-multi-region-code-free-hdmi-dvd-player-p-1330.html

But if you dont need a HD 1080P up convert dvd player, then they also have this one,

http://bargainoffers.com/catalog/pioneer-dv300s-multi-region-code-free-dvd-player-p-1342.html

I would definetly recommend this place for region free dvd players, their shipping is fast and they customer service is great.

How can a make my dvd player region free?

Kimberly

i know there are ways to hack dvd players to make them play movies from all over the world.
i need to make my dvd player able to play region 2 dvds
my dvd play is:
Magnavox DP170MW8B

Answer
I found two pages that list region-free hacks for DVD players, but your model wasn't listed. I wouldn't be surprised if only specific brands and models can be hacked this way.

The best way to get a region-free player is to buy one that comes that way new. Even buying a player that is listed as hackable isn't a sure thing - since the fact that a player's region can be changed is normally not made public, the manufacturer could remove that capability from future units without having anyone complain about it (except people trying to hack!).

Region Free DVD player question.?

What is the best region free DVD player (NOT blu gay) player for a Panasonic TV?

Answer
For DVD, I don't think it really matters anymore. My father in law has one from iView and has yet to find a disc it can't play. I think he got it at some random Chinese bookstore for $35 or so. You can find them online as well.

I had an OPPO brand player (they're made in the US!) but it died. Pity, because it was an excellent DVD player.

I replaced the OPPO with a region free blu-ray player from Orei for $150 or so. OPPO no longer makes region-free DVD players, and their region-free blu-ray player is still $500. (but it's really nice!)

Do upscaling DVD players really improve DVD image quality on HDTVs?

straussey_

I'm not expect it to make a dvd movie look like a blu-ray movie but do upscalers look better on HDTVs then standard DVD players?

Answer
Yes, new dvd players on the market now are up scaling the video signals to 1080P. But if the source dvd is low quality to begin with it's not going to look good. Like transferring very old movies from vhs tape to dvd and upscaling it to 1080P. It does well on normal dvd movies you buy. Hope this helps and good luck.

Can I connect a HD-DVD player to a (non) HDTV?

bravofan71

Answer
Yes, you just will not get the full resolution/quality available from the HD-DVD player. It will look just like a regular DVD does. If you don't have an HDTV, there's not much of a point in getting an HD-DVD player. Since the technology is still very new, I'd hold off until I had an HDTV to make the most out of it. By then the prices will have likely come down quite a bit, and players that play both HD-DVD and BluRay should be out eventually. You don't want to get stuck with a player that you paid $1000 for that only plays one of the two HD formats, especially if later down the road Bluray becomes the standard.

Upscaling / upconverting DVD players?

Simmy

I'm pretty new to this HD thing. I got a 37" Sharp (710p) HDTV which I currently have hooked up to my Xbox 360 for watching DVD's. I thought, perhaps naively, that if I got a DVD player with upconversion/upscaling, I would see an improvement in picture quality of standard DVD's.

So I got an $80 Sony at Costco which I hooked up directly to the TV through the HDMI cable which came with the player and Yikes! The picture quality is even worse than when I watch movies through my Xbox at 420p. I tried changing the settings on the DVD player to 720p and 1080i, and both looked terrible.

Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have unrealistic expectations that an upconverting DVD player would be better quality than 420p on the Xbox?
Oops I meant 480p not 420p on the Xbox

Answer
Up-converting DVD players rescale the 480 DVD resolution to a higher resolution. Your TV does the same thing. So what's the point of an up-scaling DVD player?
Well, initially, up-scaling DVD players were quite expensive because they had very good upscalers in them. Generally, they did a better job than the upscalers in the TV. So, you could get an improvement in the picture. There still are expensive up-converting DVD players that will give you a better picture.
But an $80 player isn't going to do a better job than a $2000 TV.
BTW-you should never have the DVD player upscale to a resolution higher than your TV's. The TV just has to downscale to it's native resolution. Doing it twice just degrades the picture more.

What is an upconverting dvd player?

Q. I'm looking at online reviews for dvd players and I came across "upconverting dvd players" so can someone explain in simple terms what that is?

Answer
An upconverting dvd player basically gives you a better picture than a regular dvd player. Movies on my regular dvd player look horrible on my HDTV, so I went out and bouth an upconverting one, and they look really good on it. It's a big step below Blu-Ray players, but it's a step up from regular dvd players.

help with a new dvd player

stinkers_u

does anyone know of a dvd player that plays every video format inc all versions of divx and is mutli regional. I own a philips thats 4 years old and I want to replace it. I haven't managed to find a dvd player at the moment that does the same thing as my old one! They all have hd on them now and I'm not really interested in that. My dad bought a new philips and took it back because it wouldn't play all divx's. I want a machine that can do everything...all bar the washing up!

Answer
I have a LG dvd Player that can play Divx as well.
Plus, it has a USB slot which allows you to play Dvix file through Pen drive. And, surprise, its region free.
The Model no. is DV 356.
It is also quite cheap. I bought it in India & it cost me approx $ 100.

Check it out at the following URL

where can I buy xbox 360 hd dvd player in India and are there only one kind which attaches to xbox360?

gautam

thanks for the answers - reason I asked is cause my xbox 360's disc drive is not working and as I have moved to India where support for xbox is really bad, I stuck with box which cann't play anything so buying an external drive to play games is the only option now for me

Answer
The HD DVD players have been discontinued according to my knowledge cause HD DVD lost the format war to Blu-Ray. You can still get it on Amazon and Ebay, but it's not worth spending all the money on it now since NO new movie releases will come out on HD DVD.... It's just better to get a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player to suffice your HD movie needs...

DVD Player: Pioneer DV 420 worth of buying or throwing?

Answer
For people who are looking and thinking to buy up converting DVD player, this is my personal feedback, experience and opinion in regards to this Pioneer DV 420V-k player.

This player has arrived within 5 days, relatively fast delivery, no problem.

As someone mentioned before that it has voltage capability up to 220 volts, and the one I received fixed only to 110 volts, I got it for Australia and there we have 220 voltage. For those who are buying this player to use outside of U.S. and Canada, you also would need to get step down voltage converter from you 220v to 110v.

You will not fix the problem just by changing power cords, it won't work. The other option is to look for the international version of the same model on the internet. It is able to handle 110v, 220v and 240v but may cost 10 bucks more though. Also, DV 410 model gives chance to swap cables (compare to DV 420) with no problems, just look the back side pictures of the DVD player on the net and compare that picture with your one.

The player is quite big in itself, the company made it look like a Blu ray player but it is only a conventional dvd player with up scaling capabilities. I am sure they could fit it in a much smaller portable box. If you open the cover you realise that there is not much stuff inside, it is almost empty. And the case of this model is identical to DV 610 dvd player. DV 420 is a simplified version of DV 610 and even older model DV 410. DV 420V-(k) does not have outputs for 5.1 speakers and DTS sound. If your TV support DTS output, then connect your DVD player to the receiver via coaxial or HDMI cable to your TV, else you will not get any DTS sound whatsoever!

Remember that, it will give you DTS 5.1 sound only, if you plug it in to your receiver which has got coaxial digital input, and it has got function to output 5.1 DTS on your speakers. If you connect with component cables to your ordinary TV with two speakers, it only gives you stereo sound. But for those who want to get DTS 2-Channel Decoding to TV with two speakers, you can get Pioneer DV 410 model it is an older version but more advanced, it does give you DTS 2-Channel Decoding, but it will cost you a bit more as well.

This time Pioneer decided just to cut down on cost and give exactly the same player as the older version but with less functions, what a genius! Corporations have one purpose to make more money and save on production and licensing costs and get more money from us. So with every new model they introduce every year, they also cut on something and make sure your gadget becomes lighter and thinner.

The other functions on DV 420 such as virtual surround and sound retriever are hopeless and useless. They will not make difference at all; even if there is little improvement, it does not make substantial difference to the sound at all. If you want to hear good music you still would need to play CD quality music. If it is MP3 make sure it has got the highest bit rate, as the provided enhancing sound functions will not bring any benefit at all.

Now in regards to video and region playability!!! As you may feel by now, I would suggest you to buy DV 410. The only difference they made to DV 420 is that they made it possible to rip your CD's to USB that's all, but they cut it down DTS 2-Channel Decoding, which probably cost them around 3 dollars as the license per player. To me if I really want to rip I'll do it on my computer with greater speed and control. In my opinion you do want to get good damn sound out of your TV at the end of the day anyway, especially for those who don't want to spend extra money on additional receiver, speakers or theater sound systems. Just give me my DTS for my damn TV with two speakers and I am happy.

How can you connect a standalone dvd player to your PC and watch movies?

Answer
You can:

A) Install a TV tuner card which will allow you to not only plug in a DVD player or VHS player, it will also allow you to view TV on the PC as long as you plug in either cable or an antenna.

There are many different ones but here is an example:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116007

Or

B) You can use a similar USB device, does pretty much the same thing but uses the USB port and you don't have to open the computer

Like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116034

But why would you want to??? Doesn't your PC have a DVD drive?, if not you can install one or get an external USB one.

No.

DVD players for home theaters are NOT data devices. Find a friend with a working DVD drive in their computer and bring a USB Flash drive. Have him copy the files to the USB flash drive, then use this on your PC.

Kids on Airplane..what can I take on the plane to keep them occupied?

natbyrd92

It is our family's first flight. We are going on a 2 hour flight. The ages are 9, 5, and a 2 1/2 year old. My 9 year old has a nintendo ds, can she take that on the flight? I just need some ideas, please help.

Answer
You should definitely bring some electronic devices to keep them occupied.
Things like portable dvd players, etc.
Make sure to bring them snacks that they enjoy, cause the plane may not have the right food.

*One thing that should absolutely make sure you bring is gum. Childrens ears are very sensative to the high altitudes and the plane ride can be very painful for them (I know thid for personal past expereinces). When you first get on the lpane, give each of them a piece of gum, and then another after they eat. This is relieve a lot of tears*

kids and T.V. ? how much is too much?

This mommy

ok i'll be the first to admit that our 2 year old loves t.v. and watches barney, spongebob and the teletubblies(which i hate but he just laughs and laughs. He mostly watches it when i am trying to cook and clean. I also have a 3 month old so i have my hands full during the day. My friend has a 3 year old. she is a tv addict watching more then my son by hours. she even has a tv and dvd player in her room. Her mom even lets her fall asleep watching tv. IDK i just think thats too much tv. we dont allow our son to watch more then an hour or so daily. And he will never have a tv in is room. I just think thats going to far. But thats just my husband an dmyselves personal opionion. I would never say any thing to my friend unless she asked for my opnion. but her daughter screams and cries for tv and they give up their tv time for her. That would never happen in my house. also my sister does this with her small kids. How much do you think is too much tv and do your kids have one in theri rooms?
i would never say anything to my freind or sister because its not my bussiness. i was just courious to see what everyone thinks?

Answer
like alexa said, there are differences in what is too much depending on how tv is used/watched. some days we watch a couple baby einsteins, i will admit -- on rainy days, on days when her teeth hurt and she needs the distraction -- but on those days i watch with her and we talk through it, identifying things. tv in the toddler bedroom: bad, bad, bad, i say. the way your kids are watching sounds totally moderate and reasonable. i agree that it would be ideal if they saw none, but it is all about what is normal for your family. if you are a family that watches tv, well, it is unreasonable to say "my kids won't ever watch" unless you are prepared to give it up yourself. it also depends on the individual child and how s/he reacts to it. ruby has never once sat mesmerized in front of tv or a video. but she usually watches intently the first 5 minutes and then goes off to play. as a result, i don't stress out about it. if she sat and stared, i would strictly limit her time to 30 minutes.

Buying a portable dvd player?

poodle

I want to buy one as a present for my husband for when he flys on business (which is often) but I don't want to spend loads on it at all. What is a good deal and what do I need to look for in a portable dvd player? What features should it have and what size should it be etc.

Answer
When shopping for a portable DVD player, keep in mind how you will be using the device. For example, if you plan to use a portable solely in the car to keep the kids occupied on long road trips, then the screen size and the inclusion of an AC adapter, which will allow you to power the player via your vehicle's power outlet, are more important than the unit's weight or the life expectancy of the battery. Conversely, if you are buying a portable DVD player to take with you on long flights, look for a lightweight model with plenty of battery life. If you usually travel with a spouse or colleague, or if you have two kids, opt for a model with dual headphone jacks and a larger screen size so two people can comfortably enjoy a movie while sitting next to each other.

Subtitles for Windows 7 DVD Burner?

Celty

So I've been downloading videos using torrentz (first time) and transferring them to dvds.
I'm also going to mention these are just aired anime shows that have been free-subbed. So nothing illegal because I just move them to dvds to watch on TV. They stream for free online anyway.

Anyway, I recently downloaded some HD episodes in MKV format that came with soft subs (meaning they can be taken on or off) and I want to put them on dvd. I use the program that came with my computer, Windows 7 DVD Burner, and I don't know if I can have subtitles once I convert MKV to a format suitable for DVD players. So are there any ideas how I can retain them? (i don't speak an ounce of Japanese) Can Windows 7 DVD Burner convert MKV to DVD with subtitles?

10 Points for a good, explanation on what to do. (I'm sort of kind of young and i'm not the greatest with computers...but i'm not that bad you know!)

Another question...I want to burn a Blu Ray ripped, FanSubbed series, but I want it to be in HD. So can I burn it on a Blu Ray Disk, using Windows 7 DVD Burner? I have 24 Episodes, 12 hours total, 20gb, in MKV format. Can I burn the entire series onto one disk, with subtitles? I have a PS3 to play them. o:

And for those saying I should wait and buy a series, I don't have any money, because if I did I would have spent it on those series already. ;_; (Plus I can watch it online for free)

Answer
I might not be that good in explaining so I would just give you a link for a detailed guide on how to burn MKV files to DVD including the software that you need to use.

Here it is: http://www.easydvdburning.com/guides/pc-dvd-burning/how-to-burn-mkv-files-to-dvd.html

I'm pretty sure that has the option to include the subtitles. It's what I use on my computer running Windows 7.

Is there any way to convert .avi movie files to .dat files, so that I can watch them in a DVD player?

MDA

My DVD player doesn't play .AVI files, but identifies .DAT files. Is there any free software converter?
I have Nero 7 Premium, but there is no such feature in it..
My Windows Vista Premium doesn't convert the AVI files to DAT automatically while burning..

any other ideas..?

Answer
Standard DVD players read the .Vob/.Dat format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD!

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.

What's a good portable dvd player for school-aged kids?

Q. We're going on some long road trips and think something like this would come in handy. I'm hoping to find one that's made specifically for kids - if there's one out there. If you have one you like, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks!

P.S. Please - no comments on how they don't need to be watching tv in the car (I'm predicting someone will get on a soapbox about this!) We'll be in the car for over 10 hours and want to pop in a video or two along the way. Thanks : )

Answer
my 33 month old son has one from target.com. It is flat and has a little stand on the back.It is made by audiovox. It only has one moving part...it basically opens in half to put the DVD in then the buttons are on the top. It was about $120 when I bought it in march or april. I would go to target.com and put "kids DVD player" in the search engine. He has dropped it and let it outside in the van in hot weather and it works fine still.

We go to Florida every March break with the kids. This year it'll be easier because all the kids are; of course- a year older, and more mobile. The twins are 3 and my other 2 are 5 and 7. However, this year I'm pregnant. Not even a month yet, but I have terrible morning sickness ALL DAY. I must admit, it isn't as bad as it was last week (I'm taking something for it), but it still gets bad, and I'm afraid the long drive there (24 hours to be exact) is going to be sticky.

Any advice on how to keep myself sane, and how to keep the kids occupied? I know I've been down there about 10 times, but it's always a challenge and I'll take any extra advice I can get! We will be stopping in Washington to sleep a few hours before continuing to drive!

Thanks!
Also, we're staying at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando... anyone been there/knows anyone about it?

Answer
Ge them each a little backpack and pack it with things that your children like to do, relevant to their age group, as well as little snacks and such. You can go to the dollar store and get them little games and stuff to keep them occupied such as perhaps crayons, coloring books, writing pad, pencil, little toys, perhaps small books, or even cheap mp3 players with their favorite songs on them. etc. It would also not be a bad idea to pick up a portable dvd player for your children to watch little movies and stuff on. You can also set up a little scavenger hunt for them, (such as find mommy a green car, etc) you can play I spy, and even sing along to their favorite songs with them. Perhaps you can even find them a cheap kids camera (wal-mart, 20 dollars apiece) and let them take pictures of all the interesting things they see and etc. this will keep them busy for a while.

you can go to craigslist.org and find a cheap portable dvd player in your area that you can buy. My husband and I found an awesome one for our 2 year old son when we went on a trip to oregon (we flew... 18 hour trip including layovers, and three planes there, three back....) and we paid only $40 dollars for it.

also if you have a few extra dollars, it would be a great investment to pick up some little leapster for your children, as these have multiple games they can mix and match and can keep them occupied for hours.

you can probably find one or two cheap on ebay, craigslist ( i just looked and they have them used for as low as $25), or go to wal-mart, they are $50 apiece, but they will provide you with sanity for years to come.

also how about driving down at night. That way the children will be asleep and you can keep your sanity then as well. just pack extra sipppy cups in case they wake up, and put on some soft music in the car. You can watch your kids the day before and let your husband get some rest, and then when he is driving down, you can rest, or since the kids will already be asleep, if he gets too tired, he can pull over at a rest stop for a few hours. then when you get to florida, you watch the kids for a few hours while he takes a nap, he can do the same for you, and that night, start up with you old routine.
