Why The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-118?
We chose the Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 because it had all the features and functions we needed. It also looked very attractive being a sleek and slim design. We had limited room to put this unit in our bedroom and this small and compact unit was a perfect fit for the 19" TV and the small cubicle it fits into. The price was also right at a mere $39.95. I was surprised to see how much DVD's had gone down in price since we last bought one. Sure, there are more expensive brands out there and better quality. We didn't want to invest in much here because the Home Theater system is under warranty and this is just an extra unit for the bedroom.
Features And Functions
The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 plays most media type discs including MP3's, DVD's and CD's. It is very small, thin and compact. The dimensions are 12.5" wide by 2" high and 9.75 inches deep. The specifications says it weights 3.74 lbs. and I would have said 3 if taking a guess. It's very lightweight and when pushing the open/close button you have to be careful as to not push the unit off the shelf!
This unit has the following features:
Progressive Scan- Images appear as complete scan allowing for a more complete and clear picture per frame. Picture will now show any flickering or scan lines.
Parental Lock- No mention of how to use this feature in the manual!
Slow Motion Forward- Plays DVD in slow motion.
Zoom (2x and 4x)- Enlarges the picture.
Component Output- For use with HDRV/EDTV sets to incorporate progressive scan capabilities.
S-Video/Composite Video Outputs- Connects TV to DVD Player.
Compatible With Kodak Picture CD's/JPEG- View your pictures as a slide show on your TV screen.
Coaxial Digital Output /PCM Ready - To use when hooking up an amplifier or receiver.
Plays MP3's, DVD's and CD's- Also compatible with CD-DA, CD-R and CD-RW formats.
Remote Control- My first thought is to ask any man. They are the king's of remote controls. (LOL) Ok, back to reality here. The remote allows you to control the settings without having to get up and push buttons on the unit.
Owner's Manual- Required reading if you want to know *everything* about this unit!
Warranty
The Apex Digital DVD Player, Model AD-1118 comes with a 1 year parts warranty and 90 day labor warranty.
My Thoughts On The Apex AD1118 DVD Player
We have been using this DVD player for a couple of months now. In addition to the unit we purchased for the travel trailer, we came home and bought another one for our bedroom at home. It is a good basic unit for under $50 and the performance has been pretty good for us.
I do have one complaint and that is about the remote control. It seems to hang up when using the OPEN/CLOSE button and you have to push the button numerous times to get it to function. This is the only complaint so far. I will update the review if anything else pops up.

I like to use My Simon - http://www.mysimon.com - just search portable DVD player into the search engine and you can then search the results by price. It's a great way to compare apples to apples, so to speak. Julie
