I am planning to buy an LCD TV that supports 1080p. Should I buy a upconverting DVD player with 1080i or 1080p support since I heard 1080i is good enough.

Answer
Sure, at least until the industry sorts out all of the

formats. That's what I did. I own the Oppo DV-981HD.

Otherwise, you could consider the LG player that plays

both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Discs if the high price is

not out of the question. A 1080i resolution is plenty

good enough for HDTV sizes of 37" or smaller.

Do HDTVs upconvert with a basic DVD player?

With a very recent LCD HDTV, do I need to buy an upconverting DVD player for 1080p, or does the tv do it in itself? If so, why do upconverting DVD players exist if all HDTVs upconvert in themselves? Nothing else plays 1080p other than HDTV, so this seems useless. Can someone clear this up for me?

Do I need an upconverting DVD player or not?

Answer
Because an HDTV has to be able to receive SD programming, they MUST up-convert themselves. There is NO absolute need for an up-converting DVD player with a HDTV. But there is a compelling reason to consider the purchase of an up-converting DVD player. Processing of digital video signals takes a lot of computing resources. Adding the up-converting burden to the digital signal processor in your HDTV can cause pixelization due to processor overloading. Allowing the up-convert processes to be performed in an up-converting DVD's processor resources helps to distribute this load. Distribution helps to reduce pixelization, especially during scene changes and full motion. Distribution can also result in a superior, more thorough up-conversion result. Therefore, a high quality up-converting DVD player can improve overall picture quality.
