Ubuntu 7.04 DVD player?

I had Unbuntu 6.1 installed on my Gateway E-3600. I upgraded to the Umbutu 7.04 and now the DVD player will not work. I installed the plugin that got the 6.1 working, but it still
does not work.

I've tried the GNOME media player but whenever I click to play the movie there is no sound and the image is all scrambled up like digital cable with bad reception.

Well first you need to provide some more info such as what Operating system she is using, Windows, Linux, Mac? what version, XP, Vista, 7, Suse, Ubuntu, Debian, Tiger, Leopard, Etc.. Since most people use windows let me try and give you a hand. So you say she does not detect the CD/DVD Player. Is it just the player that you guys are interested in because there are bunches, such as Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Winamp, etc.. Or is she not detecting the CD/DVD Unit? if that's the case maybe the drivers for the device are not properly installed. If your PC is running windows XP or vista you can hold down the windows key (next to the alt key which is next to the space bar) and tap the button that says Pause/Break (it's on the same line as the F Keys all the way to the right) and then click on Hardware, then click on device manager. Look for any yellow question marks, these tell you that the driver for the device is not installed or is corrupted. What you have to do in this case is find out the manufacturer of the device and the model. You can do that with driver agent. It's free. And you may download the drivers from www.driverguide.com (all you gotta do is sign up as a user which is free) and then you can download the drivers. Hi,
Am planning to hook up my 80gb harddrive to an uupconverting DVD player.Specs say it takes only FAT systems.I am mac user and i have used this drive with both mac and PC.will the dvd player recognize my drive?

Or, you can use software to reformat the HD into FAT system. I know when you install Ubuntu Linux there is an option to format your partition to FAT.

How can I play regular off the shelf DVD movies in Ubuntu? Ubuntu's movie player won't playback regular movie DVDs. It comes back with an error msg stating "Error: Cannot read source". I think this is because the movie DVD is encrypted. Surely there must be some software out there that will permit me to take my Blockbuster movie - as an example - and play it back perfectly on my Linux machine. Help!

VLC MEDIA PLAYER it is highly compatible
here is the instruction to download the software and oh~! it free!

Applications -> Ubuntu Software Centre or Applications -> Add/Remove Appications. Search for "VLC Media Player" and download the program with the orange cone icon. If you don't see an orange cone, the icon might be a cardboard box with all kinds of stuff sticking out of it. In that case, look at the discriptions. Install VLC and then use it to play your movie or DVD.
