Is my insurance company trying to avoid my claim?!?! HELP!?

Marble

I'm getting just a little bit exasperated with my insurance company.

On April 27th, 2011, my home was broken into while my husband and I were on post, helping a friend recover from surgery. My husband had checked on the apartment that evening, leaving at around 9:30p.m. The following day, when we came back to the apartment, (around 3:30pm) we noticed that our front door was unlocked (my husband is keen on assuring that all of our doors are locked). When we walked in, we found our apartment in shambles.

An officer came out and attempted to collect evidence. Our sliding glass door was also , so we assumed they went in the back and out the front...unfortunately, both doors had entirely too many fingerprints to lift just one. Pictures were also taken and we were given a damages form.

Initially, my husband thought that only our xbox, desktop, and my wedding band (off due to a loose stone) were missing....but he had been deployed for 4 months and had no idea where anything was supposed to be. It turned out that a lot more was missing. (items listed below). Once the form was filled out, it amounted to around 4500.00 The following day, I started a claim with my renters' insurance through USAA. I gave them the details, sent in all the receipts I had, along with some pictures of some of the things that had no receipts, and of course, the police report.

It has been over two weeks at this point, and we have no information as to the status. The other day, I noticed that we had been assigned a new claims agent. Upon inquiry, I was told that my case was reassigned "due to the value of the claim." It struck me as odd because I had to file a claim a mere three months ago, due to the pipes bursting in my house, and the value amounted to around $4,000.00, only $500.00 short of the value of the current claim.

We called today, and were told that "our claim required further investigation" and that we would have to do an "in-person interview."

What the hell?

Is this normal?? Should it be taking this long? Is there some sort of regulation on how long they have to respond to my claim? I'm terribly afraid they plan on denying it because we've had two claims now in the past few months....and I have no idea what an "in-person interview" entails.

Any pro's out there?

Answer
First of all, USAA is a GREAT insurance company. No scarcasm, I mean that.

Second, THEFT claims are completely different from water damage claims. There's not usually as much fraud with the water damage claims, and with a break in, inflated or exaggerated claims are the norm, sadly, not the exception.

So when, with a theft claim, you have a unusual mix of items stolen, or it hits a certain threshold that varies by company, they ARE going to scrutinize the claim more closely.

Now, you realize that there's a theft limitation on jewelry, right? No matter how many items are stolen, there is a MAXIMUM AMOUNT that policy pays, which is $1200 on the standard policy. You're over that limit.

Theft claims don't settle fast. Two weeks, is NOTHING. The insurance company can't do ANYTHING, until after they get a copy of the police report, which USUALLY takes about three weeks. They won't take your copy, they want an official one, straight from the police. A NORMAL time for settling a theft claim, is one to two months.

But that "in person" interview, is a huge red flag. Clearly, they suspect that this claim is fradulent, or inflated. They're going to record that. If you REFUSE the in person interview, they will close the claim, nothing paid. So you HAVE to go jump through these hoops.
