I have a dodge avenger with the in dash DVD/navigation touch screen. Have a w6 jl audio sub and 500 watt amp for it. Is it harder or even possible to hook it up or do i need to put a standard cd player in?
Answer
Look online for a pinout of the connections on the back of your existing stereo.
Basic wiring you'll need:
1- Power wire from battery to amp (with an inline fuse near the battery)
2- Ground wire from amp to vehicle's steel frame
3- Remote turn on wire either from the head unit (look at pinouts to see if it has one), or from any +12V accessory source in your car (the type that gets voltage only when key is turned to the ON position)
4- Speaker wires from amp to sub
Besides the basic wiring you'll need to do, you will also need to give your amp a sound signal from your head unit. This can be done directly from the speaker wires coming out of the head unit. You will need a hi-lo converter to convert the audio signals from your existing speaker wires to an RCA signal to feed into your amp. Then you'll run a basic stereo RCA cable from the hi-lo converter to the RCA input on the amp. Some amps have speaker level inputs which will allow you to bypass the hi-lo converter. Check your amp for this.
When buying the wiring make sure to get a wiring kit rated for the amount of watts your amp can produce.
