Hello friends at Yahoo answer groups,
I have a Dell net book running windows 7 starter and am using an external dvd drive, but when i open windows media player it won't play a dvd because it says something about a plug-in that i don't have.
i tried using the windows help page but couldn't get results.. does anyone have an idea, or can you suggest a different "free" media player? Thank you!

Windows Media Player is fine, just install the codec pack from http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html and it will play all your DVDs.
Technical: Compression types supported include DivX, XviD, x264, h.264 and many more in AVI, MKV, OGM, MP4 files. Video file types supported include 3GPP, AVI, MKV, OGM, MP4, MPG, MPEG, VOB, DAT, FLV, PS, TS, NUV. Audio file types supported include AC3, DTS, AAC, APE, FLAC, TTA, WV, OGG, Vorbis, MO3, IT, XM, S3M, MTM, MOD, UMX. Please note that protected formats may require a specific player. All versions of Windows Media Player are supported as well as most other players. The package supports 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows.

I have been trying to play an old home made video on my new laptop (this video has played on other computers before) but won't play on this one because it said something about it being an unsupported file type. It's a .dvd file. Is there some sort of download I could get for Windows Media Player to get this DVD to work?

You probably miss the DVD codec which is .Vob and .TS. You have two solutions: either you update and make sure to check mark all codecs boxes, or you get a free alternative for it. I have found KMP and VLC to be very reliable. Some other useful codecs are Mpeg (1, 2 or 3).
