Do DVDs bought in England work in U.S. DVD players?

Allison

I'm thinking of buying a box set of a British TV show and need to know that it will work...

Answer
no the dvd has a region code and they will not play on us dvd players. you need to buy a region free dvd player or buy a dvd player in england.

what kind of dvd player should i buy?

i have a kenwood home entertainment system with a receiver, subwoofer, and surround sound speakers. however, the dvd player (5 disc) is starting to deteriorate and needs to be replaced. i still want the surround sound and everything. should i buy a whole new entertainment system, or should i just buy a dvd player and hook it up to the receiver? the system i have now is about 6 years old, so i'm wondering if it would be worth it to spend the money for a whole new system (or if i would even be able to hook up a new dvd player with the old receiver).

Answer
Without your giving any info on your TV: Dump your old player and get a new progressive scan model (as little as $35 for a single disc name brand). I'm pretty sure, from the age of your system, that you won't need an up-converting model right now. Then wait until you have a TV that will take advantage of the new 1080p BlueRay/HD-DVD technology and get the model that prevails in the war. Prices will drop a bunch in the next year or two.
